A couple months back, when YouTuber "Ahoy" uploaded his video about trackers on the Amiga and PC, it inspired me to try and make music with some of those trackers. Listening to the bgm in that video and realising that it was all done with an Amiga or Pentium-era DOS PC kinda opened my eyes as to how capable these are when you know how to use them.

As a result, I've been screwing around with FastTracker II (In the form of ft2-clone) and OctaMED, using the FS-UAE emulator on Linux. My two working DOS/Win98 machines are currently in differing levels of shambles and I don't own an Amiga. So using ports and emulation is, as always, seemingly the only way I can do stuff like this, lol.

But yeah, i've had a lot of fun with both. I'm honestly not sure which between OctaMED and FT2 I prefer, since they both have their pros and cons. But OctaMED just pisses me off less, so actually scratch that, I think I prefer OctaMED, lol. I also wanna try out DIGI Booster Pro one of these days to see if I can compose songs in it using 16-bit samples in stereo.

I wanna get a real Amiga and DOS PC one of these days, because I have this idea roughly laid out for a separate music project that I wanna try out with my boyfriend one of these days. I'll spare you the details for now, but it basically involves using external, physical synths, recording samples from them and sequencing them using the Amiga or DOS PC. Seeing how far we can push both the synths and the computer we use.

Consider this as basically a way of dipping my toes into the pool. Considering this was my first time making music with an Amiga at all, let alone with OctaMED, I didn't need nor want to push the hardware, it was just a learning exercise. So to start with, I made something that could run on an A500, but still technically exceeded its limits so I didn't get too frustrated.

Whenever I'm learning a new sound setup, I always cover a track I already really like, or am familiar with. That way I can test the waters, kind of just play around with music and see what works for a given setup without having to stress about coming up with my own material first. And doing it this particular way, with the ST-01 samples, 8 channel limit and this particular track felt like the perfect balance of freedom and compromise.

The next track is gonna be aimed at a stock 1200 config, instead of taking advantage of my currently overkill configuration. Since I plan to publicly release all the modules, the A1200 will reach a decent chunk of the Amiga base, while still providing a good deal of musical freedom for myself. At least before I go all-out with 060/RAM upgrades.

So I'm gonna tweak the emulator to more closely resemble a stock 1200 and see how far I can push it. If I need more power to pull off any given project, then I can tweak the emulator again to see what kind of CPU and RAM I'll need for it, which, most importantly, will help me gage how much I'll be spending on upgrades. Plus, DIGI Booster supports importing XM files, which will act as a beneficial testing tool in many ways.

I've considered the possibility of the 3/4000 being better picks because they each have Zorro built in instead of needing an A1200 Zorro busboard, which are probably rarer than a 3K or 4K alongside even any rare add-in cards in general. Then again, I'm obviously gonna be saving and waiting for years for my dream big box Amiga, so something like the Vampire V1200 in an A1200 will suffice to start with anyway.

Even if that means I *might* accidentally produce something that can't run on even the fastest 060, it's whatever, and I'll still always keep that V1200 machine just in case. Plus, emulation exists if all else fails. So yeah, the stock 1200 will provide sufficient power for now and provide enough headroom for future expansion.
