I recently had the pleasure of scoring for the film Tell Spring Not to Come This Year. the film premiered at The Berlin International film Festival (Berlinale) earlier this year and the reviews have been great. 

The score is a mix of solo cello played by Husseyin Gungdongu and electronic elements. I don't really want to spend too much time talking about the compositional process here as I hope the music speaks for itself.

Another WIP here but I'd thought I post as usual. No doubt I'll update the mix in the week. I know I have used the sample in the intro before but never with much success so I'm trying again.

So Close (Cold Quays Mix) - WIP

This is  an interesting tune that I have been working on. Again, it has a long intro but please bear in mind that, although these tunes have dance beats, they are not necessarily for the dance floor.

All of these tracks are an attempt to reconcile my identity as a classically trained film/tv composer with that of the dance music producer. The truth is that it has been a wholly positive experience but the result is music that, in my mind, is perfect for a commute or easily remixable into a more dancefloor friendly style.

The long intros and other slow passages are built around sound recordings of ice melting in the Arctic. The clear division in structure happened because halfway through writing the second section I had a change of mood. The mix is still rough and the mastering is virtually non-existant.

I'll Give You the Moon (Original Mix)

This is the first track in a series I have been working on. As I keep saying, I've been trying to reconcile my downtempo stuff with the stuff I write as one half of Refix (a dubstep act). Also, coming from a garage background, I really like the 'bump' of the rhythm and the bpm, not to mention the freedom the genre gives you with regards to sounds and programming.

One thing I have to say is that, like my exploration into the world of Moombahton, I know I haven't hit the genre head on. It is is inevitable that I'm going to put my own slant on it! I'm too old to be completely ripping off genres purely to get some kind of recognition. I think...

Anyhow, it's been really good to get back to working (albeit remotely) with the singer, Emily Zuzik. Turns out since getting cuts on Moby's last records meant she's been one very busy lady! Fingers crossed she'll work on a couple more soon!.

More from the same project with another long intro. (I'm 34 and have been working as a producer/composer for 14 years - I've earned the right to a long intro!).

It's loosely based on a garage break with a strange arpeggio and an even stranger structure. i.e. The vocal drops near the end of the track. The track is not really intended for the dance-floor, it is certainly more of a chilled out vibe! I'm thinking of calling it recession garage. i.e. Stay at home and chill with cool beats! The singer is Columbo's Taji.

The Artist:

Sizzlax is the solo pseudonym for music producer and composer Joe Lewis.   In 2001, he graduated from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama having principally studied classical guitar by day, and mixing garage records by night.

Joe moved in September 2001 to South London and set up his studio, Dojo Studios mainly surviving of mixing records for other artists, whilst he developed his production skills. 

Over the years, Joe has released House as JM Lewis, Drum and Bass as one half of Bipolar, and more notably Dubstep as one half of Refix.
