On this edition of Free City Radio, author and activist Sabu Kohso speaks on the recently published book "Radiation and Revolution," which explores activist responses to the Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan. The conversation looks at the dynamics of Japanese society post Fukushima and the ways that social movements are challenging structural injustice within Japan and also in relation to Japan's neoliberal economic role in the Asia Pacific region. This interview is about alternative, Anarchist and anti authoritarian voices in Japan today.

Dehantara - Transference Of The Body

Pour Rappel, Avatar invite en 1994 des artistes à détourner le téléphone, objet quotidien par excellence, et à l’utiliser comme diffuseur, comme enregistreur ou encore comme lieu d’échange. À titre de balises, Avatar leur pose les questions suivantes : comment transmuter la banalité des échanges sonores qui caractérisent le téléphone? Comment peut-on intervenir sur les sons qui le déterminent et sur les codes d’échange qu’il impose? Cette publication est une appropriation de l’outil téléphonique et une réflexion sur ses caractéristiques propres.

Rappel est un projet qui s’étend sur une période de deux ans au cours de laquelle les artistes occupent une ligne téléphonique réservée au projet, entre le 15 septembre 1994 et le 26 mai 1995. Le 7 janvier 1995, les artistes de Rappel investissent l’émission Les chants magnétiques de Mario Gauthier à la Chaîne culturelle de la Société Radio-Canada. Toutes les expérimentations sont enregistrées et compilées par Christof Migone d’Avatar. Rappel paraît finalement en 1996.

For Rappel, Avatar invited artists to orchestrate a détournement of the telephone—that epitome of ordinariness—using it to broadcast, record, or host exchanges. To guide the artists, Avatar asked the following questions: How might the telephone’s characteristically banal sound exchanges be transformed? What could be done to its identifying sounds and the codes of communication they impose? Rappel subverts the telephonic instrument and reflects on its fundamental nature.

Rappel was a two-year project. Artists worked with a dedicated phone line between September 15, 1994, and May 26, 1995. On January 7, 1995, they took over Mario Gauthier’s Les chants magnétiques on Radio-Canada’s Chaîne culturelle. Their experiments were recorded and compiled by Avatar’s Christof Migone. Rappel was at last released in 1996.

Doorgaans is zijn muziek niet extreem noisy maar wellicht kan hij de boel wat vuiler laten klinken op deze sinterklaas avond. Bang afwachten.

The composition created for the 25th anniversary of the Czechoslovak Velvet Revolution is concerned with the topic of “iron curtains” of today, and by means of free fiction it reflects upon the specific realities of the relationship between the Czech Republic and North Korea after 1989.

Main inspiration were stories of North Korea refugees which were published in a lengthy article in the National Geographic, dated February 2009 – and especially the 2006 reports of the sociologist Marie Jelínková about North Korea women in the Czech Republic, as well as my own interview with Jelínková.

My template for the form is the non-verbal sound cinematography, i.e. films in which the leading dramatic role is given to other means of film speech rather than to words – camera shots, the set-up of the scene, action and movement, cut, sound etc. The form is also inspired by a contemporary popular genre of docufiction (documentary fiction) in which the authorial aesthetics is achieved by the director’s purposeful manipulating or influencing the recorded reality without necessarily setting up a clear border between reality and fiction.
In the composition, I work almost exclusively with sounds I recorded myself, some of which were grabbed at the true locations of North Korean laborers' stories (Khabarovsk, a Russian far eastern city, or a Czech town Beroun).

Premiered on the Czech Radio Vltava channel, on November 28, 2014.
