"My Father Was A Sailor" from Vancouver's North Atlantic Explorers is a nautical-themed album inspired by Glenn D’Cruze’s father’s life at sea.  Its highlights include a choir, a horn section featuring JP Carter (Destroyer) and narratives by Stuart David (Belle & Sebastian, Looper).

mono no aware (もののあわれ) is the first compilation to be released on PAN, collating unreleased ambient tracks from both new and existing PAN artists.

Featuring Jeff Witscher, Helm, TCF, Yves Tumor, M.E.S.H., Pan Daijing, HVAD, Kareem Lotfy, ADR, Mya Gomez, Sky H1, James K, Oli XL, Bill Kouligas, Flora Yin-Wong, Malibu, and AYYA, the compilation moves through more traditional notions of what is called ’ambient’, to incorporating wider variations that fall under the term.

“Mono no aware”, ‘the pathos of things’, also translates as “an empathy toward things", or "a sensitivity to ephemera”. A term for the awareness of impermanence, or the transience of things. A meditation on mortality and life's transience, ephemerality heightens the appreciation of beauty and sensitivity to their passing. In investigating the passing of time, the boundaries between memory and hallucination become blurred; between fiction and reality. The movement of time transforms into an eternal present.

The album is mastered and cut by Rashad Becker at D&M, featuring photography by Molly Matalon and design by Bill Kouligas. A limited version of 100 copies will be released as a special art edition in collaboration with Mount Analog for the LA Art Book Fair 2017, before going on general release.

Der Knabe im Moor from Annette von Droste-Hülshoff

O, schaurig ist’s, übers Moor zu gehn,
Wenn es wimmelt vom Haiderauche,
Sich wie Phantome die Dünste drehn
Und die Ranke häkelt am Strauche,
Unter jedem Tritte ein Quellchen springt,
Wenn aus der Spalte es zischt und singt –
O, schaurig ist’s, übers Moor zu gehn,
Wenn das Röhricht knistert im Hauche!

Fest hält die Fibel das zitternde Kind
Und rennt, als ob man es jage;
Hohl über die Fläche sauset der Wind –
Was raschelt drüben am Hage?
Das ist der gespenstige Gräberknecht,
Der dem Meister die besten Torfe verzecht;
Hu, hu, es bricht wie ein irres Rind!
Hinducket das Knäblein zage.

Vom Ufer starret Gestumpf hervor,
Unheimlich nicket die Föhre,
Der Knabe rennt, gespannt das Ohr,
Durch Riesenhalme wie Speere;
Und wie es rieselt und knittert darin!
Das ist die unselige Spinnerin,

Die den Haspel dreht im Geröhre!

Voran, voran, nur immer im Lauf,
Voran, als woll’ es ihn holen;
Vor seinem Fuße brodelt es auf,
Es pfeift ihm unter den Sohlen
Wie eine gespenstige Melodei;
Das ist der Geigenmann ungetreu,
Das ist der diebische Fiedler Knauf,
Der den Hochzeitheller gestohlen!

Da birst das Moor, ein Seufzer geht
Hervor aus der klaffenden Höhle;
Weh, weh, da ruft die verdammte Margret:
„Ho, ho, meine arme Seele!“
Der Knabe springt wie ein wundes Reh,
Wär’ nicht Schutzengel in seiner Näh’,
Seine bleichenden Knöchelchen fände spät
Ein Gräber im Moorgeschwehle.

Da mählich gründet der Boden sich,
Und drüben, neben der Weide,
Die Lampe flimmert so heimathlich,
Der Knabe steht an der Scheide.
Tief athmet er auf, zum Moor zurück
Noch immer wirft er den scheuen Blick:
Ja, im Geröhre war’s fürchterlich,
O, schaurig war’s in der Haide!

in the gap between the worlds
where ice and fire meet
i too shall be reborn
if i can hold my tongue

so mighty me can rise again
a foot of snow a foot of rain
put firmly on the ground
to resurrect and calm
the earth i‘m bound to

there will be time there will be time
time to rest and time to conquer
for now the only aim of mine
is to guard the light 
that‘s entered me

and after that, when the sun has set
the magic tent unfolded
when moon and stars and time combine
to linger on our throbbing minds
i‘ll be the one to take your hand
and guide you where i’ve never been

and we will lie in feathered grass
as gentle as an eyelid
that frames our entirety
and read our lines 
in the falling sky
