This fall, Detroit techno icons Octave One serve up the third volume of their Locus of Control EP series. The two-track offering again explores the ‘power or powerlessness people feel over the things that shape their world,’ and never has that been more true than during the last 18 months of the pandemic.
It has almost been two years since the release of the last installment. Of course, the pandemic largely explains that delay, but that doesn’t mean the celebrated Burden Brothers haven’t stayed busy in other ways. Already in 2021, they have served up their Reworks and Whatever She Wants EPs, and have also revived their more introspective 90s alias Neveron Sunday for a new EP later in 2021. More than 25 years after first starting out, they continue to shapethe modern techno landscape with their famous analogue approach, as this new EP proves.
It opens with the superb ‘Shameless,’ a heavily percussive yet elastic track that bangs from thestart. The bassline is dark and menacing but also has a subtle sense of techno funk. Once the pixelated chords arrive, the track is doused in a cosmic energy that will take dance floors to the next level. Then comes ‘School of Seven Bells’, a straight-up seven-minute techno workout laden with rich layers of synth and a baseline full of suspense. It immediately gets you on your toes and the ever-evolving pads and loopy drums ensure maximum impact throughout.
These are two more thought-provoking, body-shaking tracks from techno’s finest.

Third extract taken from Tal Fussman's forthcoming debut full-length on the newly formed Survival Tactics, 'Move Your Hips' does exactly what's written on the tin.

Slicing off a jazzed-out belter of a tune, Fussman pulls out a force-field of FX-drenched hard-bop Rhodes, altered robotic vox and purebred Chicagoan shuffle to subjugate everything and everyone in its wake. Masterly hugging the bend between an avalanche of mad-hatter electro-acoustic chords tumbling and jolting in falsely chaotic style - think an AI-powered big band gone wild, and a retro-futuristic house churn that packs a serious punch, the Israeli-born, Berlin-based producer swings the pendulum with strapping impact throughout. A buoyant piece of roaring twenties-laced athletics for the now and tomorrows, which will satisfyingly quench some of the thirst for new Fussman material, en route to the big drop later this year.

The third compilation coming out on fabric Originals also marks the first melodic, deep house and groovy electronic compilation from fabric’s flagship label. SELECTS III is a celebration of a genre that has found a firm and welcome home at the club itself post-lockdown. It includes 15 fresh, new, and all-original cuts from the likes of Red Axes, Perel, Tony Y Not, Shubostar, Glowal, and Zombies In Miami. 

SELECTS III is an array of exciting new talent, established artists, and fabric club regulars alike, all contributing towards a glistening project that will transport listeners into uplifting dancefloor-ready bliss. Red Axes, who have also released a separate single ‘HEY’ ft. A.lonzo via Originals, have put forth the track ‘Super Power Powder’. Meanwhile, rising talent and one-to-watch Chloé Caillet delivers the excellent ‘Back To Self’, making a firm stamp on the release ahead of her curated night ‘SMIILE’ at Colour Factory in Hackney Wick this November. 


Other tracks include ‘Revelation’ from Kiara Scuro; diverting slightly from the compilation’s more contemplative moments, the London-based duo presents a floaty yet impactful track, that warps, ebbs, flows, and ups the tension just at the right moment. Plus, already out, ANII’s captivating ‘Just Breathe’, is a perfect instance of the dreamy euphoria that seeps throughout the all-encompassing and well-rounded selection of tracks. 

Meanwhile, Hardt Antoine’s new track takes the listener through a kaleidoscopic sonic journey, traversing the Reculture label founder’s eclectic sonic pallet. Inspired by futuristic and science fiction themes, Antoine transports us through musical dimensions but is never unrelenting in that consistent and overarching dance-floor bliss that seeps between the track's trace-inducing backdrop.
