The original is now almost 30 years old, older than me. But it's still great, and now with the modernized version!

Does this belong in Bejeweled Feel? I mean, considering it's literally a remix of a song featured in Bejeweled 1...so, does it still FEEL like Bejeweled music? And...no? No, I wouldn't think so. Not when the majority of Bejeweled music is in 2, 3, and Twist, which all share a vibe to a degree, and is little like that in 1. Beyond references to Network, which are always welcome. But this takes a departure even from that, and goes HARD. I feel like it does not feel like Bejeweled music.

Man; Data Jack was always one of my favorite tracks in Bejeweled; love this! :)

Awesome, this is a clean track coming from an old mod! nice work!

This feels like it would fit right into a moody shoot-em-up a la Gradius Gaiden or Hydorah, and I love that about it.

I remember this one so well. Loved the S3M version - high energy tune!

Two hundred billion years ago, I helped out on a track by Radix (Mosaik these days) called "Gone Fishing," which he graciously released as a collab. It had this delicious, laid-back flavor that was the combination of his uncanny sense of harmony and my insistence that "the drums gotta pop, man."

This song is very much an exploration of that musical space, with a robust, chunky drum groove supporting a bouncy, sparkling bed of interesting melodical twists and turns. I really like it, and dedicate it fully to Jakob / Mosaik who's always inspired me to write better.

Gone Fishing Again

Way back in the stone age of digital composing, it was possible for one person to store a musical project in a tiny 500 KB file, send to to a different person halfway across the area code (because good lord dialing long distance was for madmen) and every note, sample and delicious pitch bend would be right there. Kinda neat when you think about it.

This track started its life at the desk of Radix / Mosaik / The One Of Several Names, whose creations have always blown my socks off with their restrained glee and wonder. The man builds miracles just because he can, and doesn't show off -- in stark contrast to myself, whose first instinct on this collab was to add horns, MORE DRUMS and a timbale solo. Of course he was right in humbly suggesting we dial that shit down a notch, and so the track was released unto the world.

With permission from Radix, then, here it is in its restored glory. And the timbale solo is back.

I never really cared for this track. The sounds, sampled off a Roland JV-35, were clean and reasonably punchy but also quite flat and annoying. The lead sound was grating, the solo atrocious, and the melody had a childish, irritating quality that has this track firmly on my shitlist. All the more reason to give it a second chance!

First up was deciding what to do about the lead instrument. After some experimentation I found a tweak to my standard "two slightly detuned saws" that brought a bit more motion to it, something needed for all those sustained notes. I also dug into the organ arrangement, trying to pepper some inspiration into the very monotonous chord progressions.

As always with these remakes, it's humbling for me to hear my musical ideas come out with more clarity and purpose, and as per the rule, this is now one of my favorites. I hope it'll be yours too.

Monomer is the musical alias of Gavin Allen. Born in Massachusetts, he still lives in the Boston area, working in game development by day and cranking out wicked bizarre jams by night. His musical journey began in the 3rd grade orchestra, taking pit stops in a handful of rock and jazz bands as well as the Berklee College of Music before winding up in the wonderful world of chipmusic.

"Labyrinth is everything I love about synthwave and chipmusic: chunky staccato bass lines, soaring melodies, oceans of spacious reverb and heavy, pumping drums. It was written between daydreams of androids, brain-hacking, and digital kingdoms fraught with the monsters in the machine. It was the most fun I've ever had working on music, and I hope that shows in each and every track.

Written gradually over the course of a year and a half, Labyrinth turned out to be the biggest musical challenge I've faced so far. It incorporates a wide array of instruments, from synths like Plogue’s Chipsounds VST and u-he’s Diva, to live guitar on a Fender Telecaster. My main goal after Quite Operational was to create an album where each song had a unique character, not only in the composition but also in the arrangement, production and mixing. This led to a lot of new territory for me, which was both exciting and terrifying, but I’m extremely happy with the end result and can’t wait to share it.

This album wouldn't have been possible without help from some fantastic friends. A special thank you goes out to Bill Mueller, Trevor McEwen, Mark Barry, Tim Gardiner, and Katie Trotta.
