Skeewiff In Brazil (2014)

Skeewiff have never been short of a bossa or two. Since the early days, their love for wild fusions of exotica, lounge, funk, breaks and electronics has meant that they are no strangers to the wonderful palette that is the music of Brazil. Early flirtations with the subject included their Epic battle against Big Les, their cover of Quincy Jones’ Soul Bossanova, and of course their take on Esquivel’s Miniskirt :wolf whistle:

But it wasn’t until after they were commissioned to co-write and produce Brazilian artist Pat C’s fourth album “Romantic” by Rambling Records in 2006 that things got serious. It became a love affair, and a year later, after they completed Pats album, they set about making a Brazilian inspired album of their very own.
&nbsp;
Naturally, this meant that any of the large and growing Skeewiff family that were also that way inclined simply had to get involved, which explains the gargantuan musician and featured artist list!
&nbsp;
Obviously Rayna had to feature again. She is of Brazilian descent and their collaboration on the Ghetto Latin &amp; Broken Ballroom was simply legendary. Dead cert to feature. Then of course there is Skee-veteran Daniel Hewson who first appeared on the Man Turns animal album. He simply had to be called in, as he has a doctorate in bossa nova. The hip-hop legend that is Bam from The Jungle Brothers is however, a little more unexpected, but not a surprise when you realise that Skeewiff have co-written and produced Jungle Brother albums in the past.

New members to the skee-family include the wonderful voice of Catarina Dos Santos who features as a vocalist on many of the tracks on this album, but is also an incredible samba percussionist, composer and producer herself. Then there is Bengi, another multi talented musician who sings, plays bass, gutar and keys on a couple of tracks. Even Sol Galaretta, bossa nova singer on previous Skeewiff alter-Ego IKON re-collaborates to add the final icing to the already abundant cake.

This album, that started its humble voyage back in 2008 with the co-incidentally titled track Sailing boat being written in a modest studio in Acton, West London, has culminated in tracks like Blame it on Rio, written and recorded in 6 different studios across the world. It is an homage to all the music that have inspired all the artists that appear on it. A musical pilgrimage for Skeewiff and all who sail in her.

Ronny Hammond & His Gringo Orchestra - Tequila (FREE DL)

The All Good Funk Alliance drop a new EP featuring 4 different styles of funk for their
Super Hi-Fi label. “Make it Go-Go” featuring Big Tony of Trouble Funk has that classic DC Go-
Go sound but updated for the 2000’s. It's full of clanking percussion, horn blasts, and funky
synths making for a dope mid-tempo jam.
“Do Work” featuring Mustafa Akbar, goes for that Motown sound but updated in that
Mayer Hawthorne meets Mark Ronson way. This one is really catchy and you will find yourself
singing along to it.
“Funk This Jam” featuring Soul Suit is classic AGFA. A funky mid-tempo number that
feels like something that they would have put out on Funk Weapons back in the day. It's got call
and response vocals and insane breakdowns. Classic AGFA!
Finally we have “On - Off Boogie”. This nu-disco funk jam has got some squawky talk
box, funky beats, and really intricate synth work. It leans more on AGFA's “boogie funk” style
which rounds out this EP perfectly.

Steve Cantrill aka ‘Moss’ is a producer from Cornwall, England who creates sunshine sounds in his garden shed studio under the name Daytoner.

Daytoner fuses live instrumentation with samples in his own unique manner chopping Latin, Soul, Jazz, Blues and Breaks into the mix. For ‘On My Own’, the vocal talents of Newquay based singer-songwriter, Jane Kennaway were employed to smoothly deliver Daytoner’s new lyrics, written especially to fit this classic Latin groove. Having previously released on Wack, Club Tikka/Muto and Carnibal Records, this 12" vinyl / Digital release is his debut on Wass Records.

It has been 10 years since Fort Knox Five released their first singles, and this past decade has proven very fruitful for the funky foursome.  2003 saw the launch of both Fort Knox Five and their seminal Fort Knox Recordings imprint.  To celebrate this milestone, Fort Knox Five have selected 15 of their favorite original tracks from the entire decade.

Fort Knox Five has had the pleasure of collaborating with some incredible vocalists who are well represented on this collection.  Mustafa Akbar of Thunderball and Nappy Riddem is featured on several tracks, as are Rootz and Zeebo of See-I and Thievery Corporation.   The Godfather of Electro Funk himself, Afrika Bambaataa is featured on two tracks.  Asheru, best known for his Boondocks theme song is on the opening track.  Thievery Corporation’s dancehall voice, Sleepy Wonder as well as DC’s own DIY legend Ian Svenonius are both featured.  The list continues with former US3 front-man and prolific artist Akil Dasan and the Zulu Nation’s King Kamonzi.  Rounding out the list of featured vocalists is Beta-G, on loan from the US Department of Bhangra.

This body of music not only spans 10 years of Fort Knox Five in the studio, but also live performances and dj appearances worldwide.  This music has been performed and played for countless thousands of fans around the globe.  These tunes have also been heard in such great movies as The Cove (2010 Academy Award Winner), Stand Up Guys and You Again as well as TV shows like The Fringe.  No stranger to the wide world of video games, Fort Knox Five songs have appeared on Need For Speed: Shift, Skate It, NBA Live 10, Test Drive Unlimited 2, Dirt 3, Sims and others.  

10 Years of Fort Knox Five shows the music diversity of the group with one foot firmly planted in funk.  Reggae and dub can be heard clearly alongside hip-hop.  The group is not afraid to break boundaries and delve into rock, swing and even bhangra in their musical explorations.   This collection of music represents the last decade of Fort Knox Five’s musical growth and development.
