ok so backstory:
Peppermint Daydream was a solo project/fake band i started when i was 12 years old. it was my first attempt at serious music, and it was a good learning experience. i put out like 3 albums of horrible math emo in the span of a few months.

i say it was a good learning experience, but more so for recording, releasing, and presenting music, rather than writing music, because almost every song was half assed and mostly improv'd. sometimes i'd have a chord progression i'd riff around, or maybe just one chord i wanted to use, but it was mostly me recording myself dicking around on the acoustic guitar. 

anyway, after maybe 5 months of doing Peppermint Daydream i got really into Mixcraft 7. i tried to record Peppermint Daydream tracks with Mixcraft, but it didn't click for me very well, but in my time spent learning it, i noticed that it had loads of MIDI instruments, samplers, and synthesizers. that was what sparked me making beats and electronic music for the first time, and that became my obsession from then on.

but when i was about 14-15, i got back into emo music, and started writing mathy twinkley midwest emo songs again. i planned to revive Peppermint Daydream, but because i was really lazy back then, this sloppy and rough demo was as far as any of the songs got.

okay, so like i said in the description of that Peppermint Daydream song i made, when i was about 12 or 13 i """legally purchased""" a copy of Mixcraft 7. after trying and failing to record the emo music i was writing at the time with Mixcraft, i discovered all the synths, samplers, and VSTs that it came packaged with, so i started screwing around making electronic music for fun.

i made some drum & bass, chiptune, and synthwave, but once i got into cloud rap, future bass, wonky, really any beat oriented music, it clicked, and beatmaking became an obsession that still persists to this day.

so this tune is from the first mixtape i made back then. all the tracks were all made around the time i did the beats for my homie PKSkyler's first album, but i thought it'd be cool to take things into an electronic future bass-ish direction for my solo tape, instead of the sample-based style that i was doing for PK.

i didn't know what i was doing so i put reverb on the sub bass (yes really) so the mix got squashed as shit. Mixcraft 7 didn't have sidechaining so i used this crap VST that would simulate a four on the floor ducking effect. the only instruments i used were stock Mixcraft general MIDI stuff and this plugin called Synth1. my only sample pack was the Lex Luger kit and whatever sounds i grabbed from freesound.org and youtube.

this Ween cover is from around 2017. it was recorded on a shitty answering machine tape recorder. it wasn't meant to sound like a Gerogerigegege b-side, but god works in mysterious ways.

it's like Pase Rock said on Latitude, Nujabes didn't have a style, he had styles, plural. although his music stayed rooted in classic jazz influenced hip hop, he touched on everything from breakbeat, to deep house, to broken beat, and even glitch hop in his music. he had range, is what i'm saying.

sadly, i feel like people seem to overlook the genre range that Nujabes had. when most people think of Nujabes, their mind goes straight to the style of downtempo jazz rap he defined with tracks like Luv Sic and Feather, the songs that laid the groundwork for what would become lofi hip hop in the 2010's, but he could do so much more.

i'm hoping this mix can shine some light on one different sound Nujabes experimented with occasionally. something more uptempo, danceable, and house influenced.

happy belated birthday to the legend. wanted to post this yesterday but countryside internet slowed me down. rest in peace.
