Since relocating out of Bristol there haven’t been so many releases from the young producer, but when there have, they always ooze quality and depth and detail - strengths that he’s developed and continues to hone to the next level. ‘To Shape The Fire’ and ‘Justice’ scream precision, laser guided weapons for the floor. But they also bring a technicality and depth that few can shoe-horn into tracks that also have enough weight to test even the biggest and best systems. Drop these ones at the dance floors peril.

As one of the most lauded and celebrated figures in Drum & Bass, the Swedish-born, now Bristol-hailing beatsmith Mikal has always pushed boundaries and preset, defined norms, never once being held down by the genres and concepts that are set in stone for so many. With a gritty, succinct production aesthetic and a real ear for the what’s what and who’s who of the subterranean underground, Metalheadz’s ‘silent assassin’ (coined by Goldie) retains one of the most impressive, multi-faceted back catalogues in the scene, breaking new ground with each passing release. Over the years, we’ve seen him excel on long-time collaborator Mako’s stellar Utopia imprint, Break’s distinguished Symmetry Recordings, Ant TC1’s legendary Dispatch Recordings, Horizons Music and plenty more alongside a surefire selection of previous drops delivered through that phenomenal, iconic Metalheadz membrane.

Introduced via Headz’s Genesis series, the Immaterial EP and Wilderness, his debut full-length offering on the historical imprint, Mikal’s emphasis on tight, squared-off, no-nonsense Drum & Bass has led to a large following of fans who just love this sound and approach, and this is evidenced in full by this new masterful album, which just oozes immaculate, refined taste and fully delivers on every single level, with each and every track primed straight for the jugular.

Here, we’re treated to a bruising, melodic, hard-hitting uppercut of vicious, seething breaks and percs, scything background aesthetics and ragga-etched vox, all perfectly drawn and tied together; the defined mark of an wholly experienced electronic titan. Described by the Headz crew as an ‘instant Metalheadz hit and a linchpin to the whole project’, Breaks and Pads cements its place as one of the most essential licks on the LP. After hearing 'Tubular' turn the Samurai room at Cable in October 2012 inside out at the hands of Skeptical, Samurai Music's Presha contacted Fre4knc the very next day and signed the tune for a 12" release on the label. To complete the 12" some solid hours of collaboration and mix-down perfecting were put into 'Relic' which sees Fre4knc working with rising stars Mtwn and seasoned veteran Mindmapper. A true DJ at heart, Dutch DJ/producer Fre4knc (pronounced "frequency") is seeing a rapid surge in popularity in 2013 after many years of solid devotion to promoting, DJing and producing DnB. His production name has become synonymous with raw, deep and techy drum & bass for the dancefloor. He has also built a reputation for quality DJing at his own Break-Fast events in Groningen (NL), his radioshow on jungletrain.net from 2002 till 2012, and as the label boss of Break-Fast Audio and his residency for the mighty SOLK nights. Now in 2013 he is pushing his sound further with a performance on ESNS 2013 and releases set for Samurai Music, Noisia's Invisible and Dispatch Recordings.
