Old to the school is an old school vintage golden era type hip hop beat. Originally I composed a little orchestra section, which I later distorted and then flipped as a sample. As I was doing that, it already had an oldschool-ish feel to it, so I added some dusty boom-bap drums and a subtle baseline. For the hook if you can call it that, the drums are removed while the "sample" is filtered which gives it a whole different vibe. Before the second verse starts, it gets even more subtle with more filtering, before the drums come in again. When I listen to the beat I envision a boombox somewhere on a random New York street corner during a hot summer of the late 80s. Kids playing. And one of the older guys brought a tape from his cousin, which he puts in the tape deck and then presses play!

Back with a little story for y'all: 
So I had to produce the soundtrack and sound design for this little movie.

The deadline was tight, because, you know, sound comes last. 😀 That's why I was kinda glad that for certain parts of the movie the director actually wanted to use some famous songs instead of an original soundtrack. Ok then, did the soundtrack for the rest of the movie, did the sound design, sent everything over - grab a beer and chill, right? Yeeeah, not really. Like one day before deadline the director called me and was like "Yo I've got good and bad news." -  okay now that's when you know that some serious work is lying ahead. So good news was the deadline got removed 2 days. Yessir! Bad news was the rights for the song that was used for the intro and outro (plus credits roll) couldn't be acquired (6 months ain't enough time to reply to emails appropriately? Really, Columbia? Really?). So I was asked to produce something similar in style, tempo and instrumentation as the original song - which was none other than "Africa" by Toto. 

Aaaight then - got my arsenal of vintage 80s synths ready (of course I'm talking software, I ain't no Hans Zimmer), browsed through basically each and every marimba plugin I have, kinda recreated the drums of the original and let it flow.

Even though I couldn't get David Paich to record some new vocals for me, I've had this little instrumental track ready before deadline - and the director really liked it. Phew!

The track starts off with that 80s pop Africa type marimba synth combination, that I was asked to do in the first place. My favorite part though is the second part when I let a clarinet and a piccolo go against a full-fledged violin and viola section. And while the woodwinds have a hard time competing with the strings, the brass comes in just in time to finish this battle off quickly. The track then smoothes out with a synth solo before I ended it with a really reeeally airy piano solo. 

It's the one track that I will always look back at as a reminder that I don't always need a freaking month or so to create something from scratch that I am actually satisfied with.

Quirky little soundtrack I produced for comedy-drama. A really simple tuba and bassoon melody form the basis. Some soft pizzicato strings and a solo clarinet come in and build the main melody. It uses comedic rhythmic breaks and marimba and brass elements to add variation.
