𝙡𝙞𝙦𝙪𝙞𝙙𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙚 w CCL #9 Cape Fear: A Trip to the Darkside of UKG @refugeworldwide

CCL (@ccl-url) has many tricks and plenty of surprises up their sleeve. London-born, US-bred but now Berlin-based, they are playful in what they play but serious about how they play it, whether that's head spinning 160bpm cut, "cowgirl-breaks or wiggle steppers." The key for this multidisciplinary artist and former New Forms festival curator is to find the similarities and differences between shades of sound and rhythm and exploit them to spellbinding effect. As a producer, they are no different and have always managed to find fresh in-between sounds on labels like Fever AM and Discwoman. 

The singular DJ steps up this week with almost two hours of pure sonic adventure. It's a perfect showcase of how they can soundtrack imaginary worlds from humid future jungles to robot dances in the sky. You'll hear rhythms you could never imagine and contort your body in impossible ways, all while admiring the dexterity of the DJ who has threaded together such a trippy trip.

Open Culture: No Borders is back.

This year, we are collaborating with over forty global creatives to stand against the UK Government’s “Hostile Environment Policy” and the plans set forward in their latest Refugee-Ban bill.

The policy has involved a slew of regressive legislations, intended to create a deliberately challenging environment for migrants to settle. In the process, we are seeing cruel approaches to the treatment of refugees and asylum seekers, the use of provocative language intended to create division and the adaption of laws which offer protection of human rights for all.

The first part of this project, a multi-genre compilation, will be released on Thursday 4th, ahead of Bandcamp Day on Friday. All proceeds go to Safe Passage International, who support unaccompanied young people seeking asylum to reunite safely with their families across Europe, and campaign for more accessible, safer routes to entry. 

Huge thank you to Safe Passage Youth Leaders, Sami and Abdullah and Development Manager, Isabelle for joining us to discuss their work and perspective on the upcoming plans.  

All people have the right to a happy and fulfilling life. At a time when hostile narratives and actions seek to divide us, we believe that empathy, compassion, and connection are essential values to strengthen.

I'm Joe Shaw. Originally, I am from a tiny village in rural Devon but I'm a self-proclaimed adopted northerner, so Leeds is my home.

⭐️ Tell us about the mix!
The mix is inspired by recordings of early 90s Jungle live sets. I wanted to put something together that channelled the same energy as in those recordings, flaws and all. The result is a mix of 90s Jungle and newer Drum & Bass, which I hope will be a good introduction for those that are not familiar with the genre and an absolute rinse out for the Jungle heads!! Try listening on your commute to work, it’s bound to get you pumped especially on hump day.

We're very excited to welcome Dj wiggles to the series who has quickly become a firm favourite of ours via mixes and shows on Kindred, Netil Radio, Rinse FM and Origin Tapes to name a few.  

With a regular show on Netil Radio, Dj wiggles is breaking through the London club scene and beyond. Founder of the event and mix series' kinetic and off limits, Dj wiggles is here to mainly give a platform emerging artists with the hope of being able to help build the artist's profile, in turn gaining more regular gigs and enter a scene which often times feels off limits as well as encourage more diverse lineups within nightlife. 

Leaning more into the trippy, wormhole soundscapes, the past year in particular has seen Dj wiggles play iconic events and venues including the likes of Risen festival, Colour Factory, Bodily, Patterns, Above Below festival and more (definitely recommend checking out Dj wiggles' set from Above Below once you've finished here!)

This was recorded live by Chris from FLOW records at a little riverside party put on by our crew near Oxford. I didn't actually know that it was being recorded at the time, and it contains all the wobbly fun that comes from chatting/playing a bit of frisbee etc. on the side.

It was a sunny afternoon in a beautiful spot with a lovely bunch of people - and as a result I think perfectly captured the sound of what to expect at the Common Ground Sunday Sessions that kick off with the launch party on Sunday 8th September. I figured it it would be a nice way to kick off a regular series of mixes from artists coming down to play records for us at these events in future.
