Apollo welcomes the return of Sieren 

Matthias Frick AKA Sieren returns to Apollo with his most personal EP to date. 

The ‘Fading Memory EP’ showcases Frick’s blissed out post bass atmospherics as they delve deep into bittersweet emotions and dissolving memories. 

’Move On’ opens the release, with cycling plagent pads, are counterpointed by dark bass and bumping percussion, ‘In Limbo’ introduces nervous unease through swelling side chained 2-step drums hissing ambiance and crystalline pads. ‘Break Sum 1’ provides the EP’s most heartfelt moment, yearning vocals and an uplifting melodic synth figure glisten with light for a beautiful soundscape. ‘Two Faces’ keeps the mood reflective with ‘verb drenched pads punctured by skittering, playful drum programming. ‘Dissolve’ rounds out the EP in similarly emotive territory, angelic yet melancholic and cycling female vocals. 

This is richly textured and intricately programmed electronica sure to satisfy fans of Burial, dBridge, Synkro with its soulful sincerity and warmth.

Rainer Veil are Liam Morley and Dan Valentine, two friends who met while studying contemporary music in the north of England. The pair began improvising and making drones in a dark basement before incorporating a broader palette and forming Rainer Veil as an ongoing concern last year. ‘Struck’ is their first EP and debut for Modern Love, following an appearance at the label Boiler Room takeover in August 2012.
The ‘Struck’ EP incorporates recordings made over the last year and extends from the rewired Jungle ruckus of the title track to the more emotive formation of ‘Wade In’ and ‘Bala’, through to the hazy closer ‘Yield’. There’s a melancholy pop pulsing at the heart of these tracks, coloured by a love of electronic mutations from UKG and Hardcore rave to House and Techno, most evident in the unusual recording process undertaken while constructing the EP. Each track was re-worked from radically different first drafts, often starting life as more recognisable and structured songs before being dismantled into more abstract shapes: percussion degraded and layered, vocals fed through analog delays, samples reworked at the wrong speed and re-sampled to tape for added warmth: the narrative all mixed up.

Slow Beaming

“Meeting Is A Pleasure” is an incredibly popular traditional song found on both sides of the Atlantic. It goes by different names, different melodies and different texts. It’s a shapeshifter, like so many songs. What lies at the heart of these various versions is that it’s a love song. A song of unrequited love; the moment you realise your lover has eyes for someone else.  Then there’s the part of bottle sharing. Is this song about drowning your sorrows? Perhaps it’s a parting gift, perhaps it’s poison. 

The version found on Nic Jones’ Penguin Eggs has accompanied me through many moody moments in my life but the raw a capella version of the Watersons sisters Norma and Lal singing it on the compilation “River Of Song”, has influenced this recording the most. A very special moment can be heard where Margaret Barry and Jean Ritchie compare versions on a recording session in London made by Alan Lomax in 1953.
