When I heard Cimo’s original song I was immediately struck by not only his incredible voice, but the lyrics. When I write sadder lyrics, I love tempering them with a “happier” sounding track. That’s one of the things I love most about writing music - combining complicated lyrics with production that makes you want to dance. I felt the original “Where Do You Hide Your Love” had that perfect balance. 

When I tried playing through it myself, however, the song came out as more of a ballad, and I started to hear the background vocals as lush and layered and haunting. For a potential duet with both of our vocals, this felt like the best way to sonically reflect Cimo’s original lyrics. My label had introduced me to his music and then connected me with Cimo, and I was really excited that he liked my take on his song and was willing to work on it more with me.

“Wind Up Hero” was born out of a note in my phone. I’d misheard something a friend said and, thinking they’d said “Wind Up Hero” I tucked it away for my next session.

The resulting song is sung through the character of the Wind Up Hero, who will never let you down regardless of how much pain she’s in. It addresses my tendency to emotionally drain myself in an effort to make space for someone else’s feelings, which ends up serving neither party. Showing up for someone when you’re not in a good place feels a bit like summoning a superpower, so I felt the metaphor was fitting.
