Blurb: I tend to start my mixes with downtempo, folk-y and soulful sounds and then ascend towards more upbeat tones. So it felt like a rare treat to play out a full hour of consciously softer tracks. Listening back, I feel like it weaves a quiet optimism through melancholy, which whilst unintentional, might feel quite fitting in a time of tentative personal and collective easement. I made the mix across different parts of London, in the process of moving homes – which allowed for reflection and tinkering in different spaces, perhaps giving the selections both a transient and purposeful feel.

Back at the end of 2006, when Trevor Jackson's Output Recordings folded, I put together a 3 hour tribute mix of my favourite tracks. This went out as 3 separate mixes on Solid Steel and I even made a very limited number of facsimile Output CDRs of the mixes. I've recently had requests to upload it again so, by the miracle that is Soundcloud, it's available. I've also edited it into one piece finally and the track list is embedded in the Lyrics section of the mp3.

Norway has a relatively young club culture in comparison with other more historic musical locations, and yet, perhaps as a consequence of it’s relative infancy, it appears to have spawned a very distinct sound of its own. Many people will recognise the signature ‘Nordic Disco’ style of lauded producers such as Todd Terje, Lindstrom & Prins Thomas - and yet one of the pioneers behind the birth of this sound is perhaps a little overlooked. With four excellent LP releases under his belt and DJ-ing regularly for the past 30 years has led to Bjørn Torske becoming something of a cult hero in the Norwegian scene. A producer and DJ with an idiosyncratic style, a nuanced ear and a most unusual ability to be ultra eclectic without losing his own voice. 

What is most appealing about Torske, both as a DJ and producer, is the breadth of musical influence from which he is able to draw. I was only introduced to his work earlier this year when Métron’s very own Harry Leath sent me a few tracks, along with a message ‘You’ll love this.’’ Nothing could have been truer, the joyful disco cuts he sent were irresistible. Digging further, his full lengths offer up a veritable bag of dub, jazz, funk, disco and house, showcasing a voice distinctive in it’s varied and experimental quirk. 

I was excited to hear what he had prepared for his Métron Musik Mixtape, and was predictably delighted with the outcome. Recorded at his home, Bjørn takes us on a moving musical odyssey, spanning everything from Electro synth pop, Ambient, Italian funk, Reggae, Kraut psych-rock, Afro-Cuban Jazz, and of course, a sprinkle of house & disco for good measure. He’s a DJ, that after 30 years in the game, is still interested in trying new combinations and taking risks. The results are powerful and clear for all to hear on this wonderfully cinematic excursion into just a small section of Torske’s bag of tricks. He’s a selector of the highest level and seems to breathe new life into his sets with each new track. It’s an honour to have him as a part of this series of mixes, this is certainly one on my favourites to date.

Slowly but slowly back on it here fam, it's been quite the ride so far these past weeks and months for us all. While taking a break from protesting injustice and wrapping up a few new studio projects, laid this mix down during a moment of serene quarantine. An ambient-not-ambient mix of new music to vibe inside to, with twists of emotional current states and occasional rhythmic cameos. May it help you contemplate and find meditative states, to recenter, realign, and recharge for the work ahead that must be done. As the sublime closing piece by Peaking Lights implies - change always comes... but it starts within with one. Love, Peace, and Elbow Grease to all.

Ninth Black and White Session with DJ Soulsonic a/k/a Herr Wempe.
Mr. Wempe likes music with soul. He has been DJing with records for many years and has been hosting the monthly party series "Soul Gallen" at the Palace (St. Gallen) since 2010. The musical spectrum includes Motown classics, Northern Soul rarities, deep funk, rhythm'n'blues, dancefloor jazz, boogaloo, afro-beat, rocksteady etc. It doesn't matter if it's from the 60's or today, as long as you can dance to it. As DJ Soulsonic he co-founded the internationally successful event series "Rap History", furthermore he is co-owner of the record store "OOR Records" in Zurich.
