If STRGTHS offered a taste of the Swedish duo SHXCXCHCXSH’s sense of humour and willingness to actively resist order, Linear S Decoded see them in full control. 

The complex, onomatopoeic track titles are gone and replaced with more recognisable words and expressions, as though the pair - having strayed dangerously close to parody have decided to reign it in, declaring we make the rules round here. 

And they do. 

Whilst many of the textures on the album can be cross checked against celebrated European Techno of yore, it’s the unapologetic nature of SHXCXCHCXSH’s composition that marks it out against the rest. And it’s a development - where STRNGTHS might have opted for simply another cavernous kick drum, there are hooks here (see This Hmming Raverie), and bonafide musical pieces (see Monolithic Conclusion). Where others might feel ashamed that such uplifting and tonally pleasing sounds are coming out of their machines - SHXCXCHCXSH revel in this fact, warping and bending these sounds unashamedly to craft a truly singular Techno album.

In the years since doors and floors have opened back up post-pandemic, it’s still nice to hear a crop of newer artists experimenting heavily with half-time tempos and mechanoid sound design; a welcome zag from the blisteringly paced, festival-ready music that’s a bit overly reliant on referencing the past. Dual Monitor is one of these newcomers that has consistently upped the bar for themselves and their peers across the UK Bass continuum since arriving on the scene. Comprised of Fliss Mayo & Zebb Dempster, Dual Monitor has had a relatively fast ascent, weaving strands of everything from proper dubstep and R&B, to techno and dembow into a seamless quilt of absolute barn-burners. 

They’ve released a number of singles with Cloudcore, a label that has proven over the past few years to be as vaporous as they are provoking, and they’ve let loose other undeniable projects on labels like DJ Cosworth’s tools-leaning HARDLINE. Earlier this month, Dual Monitor announced their 4th release of the year: an immaculately produced 2-tracker EP off SPE:C. Step Pattern is an absolute showcase of Fliss and Zebb’s incredible ability to marry the rhythms of bygone eras with au-currant textures. We’re lucky to be able to connect with the duo, who’ve put together an incredible blend of tracks for our MIXED BY series, and have answered a few questions from us as their latest output continues to seep deep into the psyche of the broader electronic world.

Speedy percussion meets screwface basslines: the Parisian club maestros are in session. 

Trying to find one word to describe the music of Amor Satyr and Siu Mata could run you into difficulty. But if we were to try, we'd reach for amphibian: slippery, nimble and evading borders with ease.

With solo and shared releases on labels like SSPB, HARDLINE, TraTraTrax and their own WAJANG, they have evident kinship with what moves contemporary dance floors. The pair are also linked to the rise of an alchemical style they like to call "speed dembow"—taking the looping rhythm of dembow before pitching it up to modern club tempos and adding muscle.

Combining tribal techno, baile funk, dubstep, jungle, dancehall and beyond, their RA Podcast makes for one hell of a ride, with over two hours of romping percussion, lysergic effects, high drama and plenty of wobble.

Laksa's (@laksauk) contribution to techno is as vital as it is hard to define. The London-based Bristolian never sits still in one stylistic niche and is as likely to ramp up the techno as he is slow then down. His meticulously designed grooves have come on tasteful labels like Hessle Audio, Timedance and Ilian Tape, always with a focus on dance floor dynamics. Further creative outlets come in the form of the re:lax label, club night and NTS show he runs with with re:ni. Most recently he has cooked up the WONDA EP which includes a vocal collaboration with Nyege Nyege-affiliated Phelimuncasi

The podcast he serves up for us is, in his own words, "a mix of hype and hypnotism" and it includes some tasty unreleased music from the man himself as well as the likes of Ma Sha, Siu Mata, Erik Luebs and Crespi Drum Syndicate. The 90 minutes are as wide-ranging as you might expect with bass-heavy grooves, trance-inducing synths, broken techno workouts and tribal rhythmic explorations all making sure both head and body are catered for in style.
