Bass Chasers 2.0 [M I X T A P E]

We wrote this track for Okeechobee's DJ/song submission contest and this was actually our first release produced out of Ableton, after working in Logic Pro for about 5 years.  Let me tell you - switching DAWs was a breath of fresh air.  Sound design in Live is a million times easier for bass music than Logic, and we've been having a blast using it.  

Our favorite standout part of this track is definitely the drums.  We loveeee using bucket snares in our production - the raw clang of the snare resonance just adds this energy to a track that makes us want to headbang.  The snare started off as a Virtual Riot acoustic snare sample.  We wanted to add a lot more punch to the sample, so rather than compression/clipping the acoustic snare itself, we clipped the transient out of a synth snare and layered it with a click sample, then clipped the layers into oblivion until it was snappy and punchy.  We layered the transient result onto the acoustic snare and added some light compression to make them blend for the result you hear now.  The kick is one of our kicks from our library.  The rattle percussion is a one shot we pulled out a loop then varied the groove and velocity on to give the vibe that it has.  

The basses here were the fun part.  The choppy basses you hear in the first verse is actually the result of resampling and combining some of Chime's bass samples.  To give it the feeling of growing and emerging out of nowhere, each resample was more and more distorted with less filtering.  We chopped up the final result in the arrangement view in Live after bouncing to audio and introduced repeats and rolls to add more energy and emotion.  The growl bass on the verse is one of our favorite Serum patches with some very simple post processing - a little bit of EQ to make it fit, some clipping to control the dynamic range, and some very soft low pass filtering on the high end to control the harshness.  One of our favorite tools for this is Sonimus' Britson Console emulation.  The Britson console is very simple and has nothing but a gain fader, a low pass filter, and a high pass filter, but the filters on this emulation are literally smooth and subtle as butter.  It's very easy to low pass down to 2k on this thing and still maintain a lot of high end presence - that is how subtle this filter is, so it's great for making micro-adjustments to how much high end presence a sound has.  The final drop bass is a patch we built with 4 or 5 different layers - a sub, a straight up the middle mid-bass saw path, a distorted buzz layer that we ran through 4 or 5 different instances of OTT at low depth values (multiple OTTs in a row is fabulous for sound design because it introduces weird phase variances in the signal that compound and change the tone), and finally a high mids layer that opens up at various parts of the bass to give some vocal inflection and emotion.  

We had a great fucking time making this track and being able to explore some of the more experimental sounds in bass music.  We hope you enjoy <3

Burning Buildings

This is a track that we've had in our catalog for a while.  Shelby absolutely loves the sound of haunting, ethereal flutes along with anything that has a worldly vibe, and is responsible for most of the top line and melodic design.  We started this song off as nothing but some drum design and a few different sub lines that I had saved in a project.  We wanted this kind of organic, breathing vibe to the intro, so we started off with the rolling sub line and lots of squelchy vocal FX samples on top to give the feeling of the track slowly evolving and coming to life.  Shelbs chopped up the flute samples for the main melodic verse and got a really great atmosphere and vibe going.  You may notice that most of the action in terms of distortion and bass doesn't start til the second half of the song and this was very much intentional - a lot of tracks in our catalog tend to be more on the energetic side, and we had a strong desire to create something that really takes time to build the energy and evolve the vibe.  Wes designed the first distorted bass using Phase Plant, some automated high pass filters, comb filtering, and some distortion.  Once the basic patch was designed, he started printing audio of different variations of the patch with pitch bends, different LFO speeds, then spliced them together into the bassline we have today.  The second distorted bass is a Skribble favorite and was all Shelby - the subtleness of the LFO automation, growl, and pitch bend give a really imposing and deep growl sound that really drives the energy and motion of the track forward.  We had a blast making this one and we're super stoked to finally be able to share this one with you guys <3

Skribble, S4V10R_S3LF - Fortuna

This is a collab we've been working on for a whileeee with the homie Optimix.  He got us started off with some heavy hitting drums, a hype ass intro, and the first drop.  We went to work on some sub design, filling out the first drop, and the melodic design for the B section and drop #2.  Some of the processing on this track is fucking wild... for the machine gun basses alone in the drops it took quite a bit of compression/clipping and EQ to get the two layers to sit well together.  Once we had the dynamic range locked in for the machine gun basses, we went in with some of our favorite bass sampler instruments and filled out the drop space.  The B section is one of our favorite Serum presets for the bass and a saw synth that we designed for the top line.  We realized pretty early on that the top saw synth layers carried quite a few different vibes when re-arranged, so we carried that melody into the trap section prior to with some our favorite hard-hitting 808 samples and trap drums for a quick vibe switchup.  Optimix has consistently been one of our favorite friends and artists to work with over the years and it was truly a fucking joy to be able to play around with this project with him.
