If 2013 was Skrufix’s ‘difficult second year’ then it’s fair to say that the now fully-fledged label handled its difficulties very easily.  As well as having their most successful release to date (‘Walk in Stomp’ by the Mighty Hor) featured in the Juan Maclean’s hugely popular BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix, the Commonwealth-born and Berlin-based label organised a smashing series of Berlin parties at venues like Suicide Circus, Farbfernseher and a number of secret venues around the city.  2014 has featured two killer parties already, and it’s still only February!
 
There is more to this label than just parties though.  Having slept through the winter, Turtlez now return with their second release as they crawl out from hibernation in the newly constructed Skrufix Studios - and this time they are aided by a Higher Power as ‘God iz Back’!  Inspired by the recent trend for high energy gospel-fuelled dance music pioneered by the almighty Floorplan (aka Robert Hood), the Turtlez duo deliver their own distinctly religious track ‘Dream of Heaven’.  Their holy offering is even more solemn and deep than Mr. Hood’s, and its solid kicks, scraping percussion and joyous vocals take listeners on an equally moving spiritual journey.  On the flip side is something different but complementary: in the track ‘Smoking Buckets’ the Turtlez drop some broken beats and beautifully cut-up vocals, mixing something new into the old school feel that they know and love, and which they flaunted on their first release last year: http://vimeo.com/54405640
 
As the party-planning gathers pace, so too does the release schedule: expect 2014 to be the year that Skrufix get busy!  The Turtlez duo are already working on their collective follow-up to this release, while also preparing their own individual confections under their solo aliases Things With Wings and The Crane.  What’s more, we have a special artist working on a DOPE track as we speak - so watch this Skrufix-filled space for more freestyle dancefloor adventures!

Skrufix releases are like buses: sometimes you wait ages without seeing any, and then suddenly three come along at once (they also resemble buses in that they transport you to exciting places for less than the price of a train ticket). Fortunately, they are unlike buses in one important respect - driving away on the first one to arrive doesn’t then preclude you from embarking on the second or third. This is good news for all passengers on the last Skrufix departure (expertly driven by EDMX), who are now warmly invited to take a seat on Aashton’s welcoming new double decker!

Aashton is the current alias of Brighton -based DJ and producer Dominic Ashton, former lead singer of the band Kinema and one half of house duo Aashton & Swift.  Dom’s previous releases on labels such as Kitsune, Body Work and Get Physical have endeared him to dancers and DJs around the world. We at Skrufix have long admired Dom’s smoothly refined house stylings, and were delighted when he joined us for a rapturously-received DJ set at one of our parties in chic Berlin nightspot Loftus Hall earlier in 2014. He now blesses us with a very special pair of what can only described as ‘emotional bangers’ for his first release on Skrufix: “4 Real” and “Clocked It”.

Lead track “4 Real” wastes no time in building up into a giddy confection of squelchy garage basslines, lush disco strings, heartfelt vocals and rhythms tighter than shrink-wrap, while “Clocked It” takes an equally scenic route to the dancefloor via its irresistible riff and choppy vocal tics. To complete the package, your ticket includes a buzzing early-hours techno detour from Cosmo Lopez, one half of much-loved dance conductors LPZ (Tru Thoughts / Kitsune / Body Work).  Bon voyage!

Things With Wings is back with a two-track EP of afro-inspired goodness, to be released on 16th September on Skrufix. Heavily influenced by the production styles of modern Nigerian dance music, the hypermodern tracks are the first in a spate of new releases coming out on the innovative Berlin label in the second half of 2016.

'I've been playing a lot of Nigerian dance tracks recently, and it tends to be very vocal-heavy and not great to mix, so I've been making my own instrumental beats to mix with it,' says Things With Wings. 'Shanghai [Burton] heard some of the tracks and thought we should put them out. Then [up-and-coming Berlin artist and friend of the label] Drømsjel heard the tracks and said he wanted to do the artwork for the cover - that's when I realised this had to happen.'

Berlin coterie Skrufix continue to bolster their steadily developing catalogue following up two mighty UK-centric releases from EDMX and The Crane. In for their 11th release is an EP from fellow Berliner Skwirl who slots neatly into the catalogue with a trio of daring and break-heavy club tracks.

Having previously released on Moon by Day and Filthybroke of Rhode Island - Skwirl brings a 6 year production hiatus to a close and in doing so channels time spent - eyes down - having worked with immersive theatre companies, independent artists, Cannes affiliated films and even NASA/MIT.

His work combines structural fluidity, polyrhythms and undeniable low-end weight and kicks off with Attache Case. Rhodes samples glide through drum shuffles and rough, rasping bass tones. Switches between analogue and organic drums dart under reverberating pings before Prenzlauer Birds brings a batch of slick samples together into an irresistible groove.

Chopping and changing throughout, Prenzlauer Birds keeps the floor pinned throughout before Two Finger Exercise closes up with snapping drums and rich, mangled sonics that bring a solid addition to the Skrufix catalogue to a close.

New year, new Skrufix release and this one is on vinyl once again!  Following a return to form with stellar releases last year from Things With Wings with some Nigerian inspired beats, our 2-Step King, The Crane and an extremely well received release from new boy, Skwirl, we continue with quality production levels and one hell of a release from Nathan Jonson. 

After a successful decade of releasing music under the Hrdvsion alias (Wagon Repair / Sound Pellegrino / Planet Mu), 2015 saw Nathan reach a turning point in his musical career and re-launch with a new direction under his birth name.  The Jonson family are clearly one of good musical stock; his brother is the formidable Matthew Jonson and Nathan has recently released on 20:20 Vision as well as his brother’s new Freedom Engine label, among others.  We are therefore more than a little bit chuffed to get him on-board for this new EP, ‘Space Between Breath’.

The release kicks off with the title track ‘Space Between Breath’, an ideal opener that builds into a lush, intricate Techno track accompanied by bouncy synth sounds.  Label regular, The Crane brings his usual 2-Step talent to rework the first track exceptionally.  On the flipside, things kick off with a darker feel and acid sounding synth lines on ‘The Transfer’, followed by a fine finale in the trippy and chugging sound of ‘I’m All We Got.’

It’s quite the release all round to be honest!  And we’re very excited to finally get this one out there.  Look out for more excellence to come later in the year as label regulars, Turtlez and Skwirl prep new EPs, alongside some surprising new additions along the way!

Skrufix is a record label based in Berlin.  Launched in 2012 by Alex Stacey (Things With Wings) and Liam Nolan (Shanghai Burton), Skrufix has aimed from the very start to provide a distinctive sound which bridges the gap between the musical rough and the smooth.

Over the last two years Skrufix have achieved this aim through releases which range in style from techy house to breakbeat-driven rave, and celebrated these successes with numerous well-received parties at various locations around their adopted home city.  By never taking the path of least dancefloor resistance, the label has established itself as a fearless defender of unorthodox beats which nonetheless move the crowd.
