This piece: 'Conquest of Paradise' is a cover from Vangelis, and most people would know it as a theme track for the movie “1492”.

In 2002, John Styles and his former co-writer / composer Jaap, began to create another arrangement for this song in Germany, but were never able to complete and release it, as Jaap became very ill. From the moment this song was released by Vangelis (1992), Jaap and I wanted to convert it as a duet Orchestral / Band effort, and we even wanted to create solo guitar tracks for it, to run along with The Orchestra at the end. However, John and Jaap were unable to completely finish it.

This song thus stayed on the shelf to be re-discovered and picked up again, and in 2013, because Jaap is no longer with us, both John and Matt started building on the very first ideas / tracks which had been started in 2002 in Germany.

As a result of this new beginning, 'The Orchestra' felt inspired and wanted to play this song as a part of their curriculum, entailing a rebirth and rearrangement of what had already been started by John and Jaap in 2002.  We hoped to join forces so that the band 'Euphoriqa' and 'The Orchestra' could play together as one, utilising the skills and techniques of orchestral and synth-style music. We hope that we have managed to achieve this in the way intended.

In the beginning of this song, 'Euphoriqa' keeps the lead of the song, and 'The Orchestra' is supposed to come in (at around 2:20), and they both join together again as one at the end part in a wonderful crescendo. The volumes of this version, were deliberately premastered on a massive scale, because we did not want this song to end up sounding like and released by others like a remix.

Unfortunately, due to little studio availability and practise time for members of  'The Orchestra', we all decided only last Friday (6-9-13), to pre-release this song to share with you, as a 'Euphoriqa' release, and then to continue this duet further at a later stage.  Thus, what you are listening to now is still a WIP [Work in Progress], and other members of 'Euphoriqa' will also contribute more with additional guitar solos.

Irrespective, what you hear now brings us great pride and inspiration to continue working on it further and to share with you. Because this version is still a WIP, and may not be of the quality that many have come to expect from us, or perhaps what we even aimed for, we achieved this in such a small amount of time, that we are very proud of what we have accomplished so far.   

I only wish that my former co-writer / composer, Jaap, was here now to enjoy working further on this latest version, but I know he would have loved it very much. Thus,  I would also like to dedicate this piece, 'Conquest of Paradise' to my dear friend Jaap. 

We all hope that you will enjoy our first duet version of 'Conquest of Paradise', and we would like to thank the members and the director of “http://soundcloud.com/the-orchestra” for inspiring us to finish this piece. We had a lot of fun making it.

Euphoriqa - Conquest of Paradise

This track is based upon the melody I have lately in my mind that was inspired by some classical concerts I have seen recently in Concert Hall "Lisinski".
Written especially for the G-technology Driven Creativity Competition 2013 and it took me about 3 weeks to finish it.
Update: Poseidon was shortlisted among best 15 composition and one of the most listened on competition.

a tune written with a person I know in mind - a lost soul who used to be so bright eyed and hopeful.   Until he met 'Mary Jane' and since then, his dance with her pungent sweet smoke has taken him down a dark and lonely alleyway. 

Can only hope that she releases her comforting grip sometime soon.

Its all about holding onto your dream, in this case, music, when times seem toughest. 'Emotional Playing ......'

Do you ever suffer 'musician's block'? Have you ever felt inadequate? Have you been stuck for ideas, or tried to create and nothing seems to come out? Its a 'war' inside one's own mind.  Perfectionism, lack of time, 'I'm not good enough' …. excuses abound …. eventually negative feelings can creep in  and override that 'dream', whatever it may be, [in this case music]. Frustration can creep in and 'musician's block' rears its ugly head.

Such thoughts may be reinforced, as one gets out of practice and the skills one gained eventually weaken ….. one feels like they need to start all over again; just as I did, when poor health intervened in my 'journey' and I felt that no progress had been made; that I had to start all over again; the 'fun' had been lost. …………….. My original goal: to enjoy, to escape, to heal, and to feel with music - my outlet-  had become a source of frustration. Maybe others can relate to such feelings?

Musicians are often described as quite emotionally sensitive people, whom are able to push out such emotions into, and through their music -  and it is these internal feelings that make a difference - it doesn't have to be 'perfect' - it is a journey of story-telling and of transporting ourselves and others away. This was my 'journey' and journeys can be 'rocky roads'.  

Musicians are story tellers with music, and not just with words - and it doesn't need to be 'perfect', creativity can never be 'perfect'.
- we feel and inject  pain, anger, sadness, happiness, and beauty, we reveal the emotions into the world of sound, transporting ourselves and other people into this 'world', often transcending what is 'technically correct' - yes, technique  is important too, but we try to bring it from the heart as well.

Music is my outlet. Yours too?

Whatever one's goal is; whether its for fun or to become famous (ummmm, lol), or to feel lost and escape the world of 'reality' for awhile… it is your dream, as long as it is a passion and it remains fun 

Some dear friends on SoundCloud encouraged me to keep going and I also watched some great videos about 'emotional playing' and learning how to relax into one's music without being overly self-critical. What also inspired me, in knowing that I would never become a 'concert great' :-), ... was that some great composers who achieve such passion and connect through 'emotional playing', are also famous for bad technique and playing wrong notes :-)

So - This is my renewed attempts - its a - Megs 'starting' again piece, a WIP [work in progress] and it brought me great comfort to know that I could once again, sit down at the piano and play at least; to rediscover the energy and satisfaction. To learn to be kinder on myself, to be patient and to know that we don't have to be 'perfect'  in creativity

- and most importantly to have fun in doing so! :-)

This sonata is part of the earliest group of sonatas that Mozart published in the mid-1770s. The work was written down during the visit Mozart paid to Munich for the production of his La finta giardiniera from late 1774 to the beginning of the following March.

This first movement (of three) is a sonata-allegro movement that is concise, with an economy of ideas - the development section is a mere 18 measures long.

Schindler's List is an American 1993 historical film directed by Steven Spielberg. It is a dramatized account of the true story of Oskar Schindler (Liam Neeson), a German businessman who saved the lives of more than one thousand Polish Jews during the Holocaust by employing them in his factories.

My wife bought a fabulous original watercolour painting of purple poppies and she left it on the music stand of my piano. As I sat down to practice I gazed at the painting and improvised this track. It has two aspects - the present day image of poppies blowing in the wind and the associated remembrance of soldiers who died in battle.

I recorded the improvisation and practised it until I could play the left hand part without it sounding too amateurish - at the end of recording the track my left hand felt about ready to fall off!
