This week’s been Mental Health Awareness Week. To mark it, I made two covers for the Mental Health Foundation: John Martyn’s ‘Solid Air’ and Nick Drake’s ‘Pink Moon’
.
Martyn wrote Solid Air for Nick Drake, who was a friend, when he was experiencing depression. 'Moving through solid air' is how Martyn pictured Drake's state of mind and offered, with the song, to go through it with him. 
.
'Pink Moon' is from the last record Nick Drake released before ending his own life. I chose them partly because they’re brilliant songs but also because for me they act as a sort of musical reminder that we are each other’s keepers.
. 
At a time when conditions like anxiety and depression are rising, and with the mental health sector ‘chronically underfunded’, according to the British Medical Association, the work of organisations like the Mental Health Foundation is as vital as ever.
