Don't Drop The Grilled Cheese


I was inspired by Jeremy Donavan’s didgeridoo playing and A Tribe Called Red’s Electric Powwow to create a new genre of music: Electric Didgeridoo. In the track Time Travels, I incorporate traditional didgeridoo along with synth, bass, and techno house beats to reimagine what Indigenous Australian music could sound like. I chose to start off with the didgeridoo and an almost angelic sounding choir to symbolize the birth of the instrument in its purest form. Moreover, the introduction starts off quiet and gets progressively louder, illustrating the rising of music as an indigenous aesthetic. At 0:20 seconds, the didgeridoo stops and a techno bass sound starts building up. This is symbolic of the silencing of native voices through the imposition of colonial culture at first contact. At 0:28, both the bass and the didgeridoo start playing at the same time, and there is alternation between accentuating the didgeridoo and the techno beats. This variation reflects the inconstancy of the relationship between the two nations as they struggle for power. At 1:16, there is a futuristic falling star sound effect. The falling star puts an end to the power struggle and gives rise to a new beginning, in which the two elements are constant. At 1:37, a new sound starts building up, and it accompanies the didgeridoo until the end of the track. This sound is what I imagine flashing lights and shooting stars would sound like. It creates a futuristic, hopeful, and exciting atmosphere that is symbolic of indigenous resurgence.
