DJ Juanny utilizó el Elektron Digitakt para deconstruir su proceso de producción musical y diseño de sonido. Mientras aprendía a usar la máquina, las capacidades y limitaciones del equipo le ayudaron a crear las tres canciónes que se encuentran en Metal Gear. El EP del productor de San Francisco, CA destaca guaracha minimalista y dancehall distorsionado con samples de Don Omar, Daddy Yankee y Oklou.

DJ Juanny leaned on the Elektron Digitakt to deconstruct the most stifling layers of music production & sound design. Simultaneously learning how to use the machine while working on new tracks, the groovebox’s capabilites and limitations helped spawn the three tracks on Metal Gear. The EP features scaled-back guaracha & warped dancehall with vocal samples ranging from Don Omar to Oklou. Each track was recorded as a live composition, a departure from the more linear songwriting process in Ableton.

PAPI JUICE: Tell us about this mix & where you wanted it to take people.

PIERRE KWENDERS: I basically wanted to take people on a trip, make them feel all the flavours of Moonshine and myself. 

PJ: What is it about the full moon that makes a party better?

PK: Even if the full moon is not about the stars, but they are all aligned. With the moon shining bright in the night, we can feel all the great vibes she’s throwing at us. It’s love, joy, care, respect, ambiance and sagacité.

PJ: What are some of your pre-performance rituals?

PK: Rolling up a joint, smoke with a glass of Barbancourt Rhum. ;)

Tired of not finding the sort of space she wanted to go out and dance in, Toronto-based DJ/producer @bam_bii decided to create her own. Six years ago, she started her JERK party in her native city – in order to offer a more inclusive array of genres as well as a space where people of colour and of the LGBTQ+ community are welcome. “It started out in a tiny DIY venue with me giving away free chicken wings. I spent the whole day cooking for attendees and now it has grown into a giant rave,” Bambii says. Having hosted DJs including Mike Q, Full Crate, Venus X and Manara, JERK’s sounds are very much of the no-borders global club scene, as well as embodying Bambii’s own Caribbean heritage and the diversity she was exposed to growing up in Toronto. “I realised through my own touring that the problems Toronto nightlife has is not unlike the problems that many other cities face, so touring JERK across North America seems so necessary right now,” she explains. “JERK sounds like the Caribbean underbelly of Toronto but extends out to the global club music that has an infinite amount of cultural connections. This year JERK will be hitting Halifax, Los Angeles, New York, Montreal and of course Toronto. We have DJ/producers like Asmara, TygaPaw, Foreignerrr and many more that will be featured on the tour.” Mykki Blanco described her as “one of the most talented DJs I know period,” and Bambii’s Dummy Mix is a wild, no-holds-barred array of club sounds, from old skool jungle to Omarion remixes to early 2000s UK garage. “This mix captures the sounds of JERK and all the communities that support it,” Bambii says – and you can press play below.

As I’m having to spend all of my time indoors, I keep thinking about what an outdoor paradise looks and feels like. A big part of paradise to me is the feeling of harmony. And my idea of harmony is about the acceptance and coming together of my different moods and desires. The dissonant bongos, echos and varying genres of music in this mix are meant to reflect that. Whether people enjoy this mix in isolation or with people, I just hope that it makes them smile simply because of the song or because it made them think of someone.
