Slam instigated Glasgow's underground House music scene in the late 1980s, going on to be instrumental in the explosion of the UK Techno scene, and their quarter of a century of exploits have seen them travel far and wide, leaving scorch marks on dance floors everywhere while taking their uncompromising vision of Techno around the world. Here's something just a little bit special...

Ahead of Riverside Festival in Glasgow this coming September we have been blessed with a series of mixes from some of the best and most influential dj's in the city. There is no better place to start really than with Slam, the dj duo extraordinaire who have contributed a lifetime to techno. The pair remain two of the most prominent dj's on the circuit and over the years have established a fierce reputation for their approach to the genre. Their own record label Soma, which they founded alongside Dave Clarke and Glenn Gibbons, has released some of the most crucial music from within the realm of techno and has been a home to musicians like The Black Dog, Surgeon, Deepchord, Daft Punk, Gene Farris, Schatrax, Silicone Soul and many, many more. 

Longstanding residents at the infamous night Pressure the pair have worked alongside some of the biggest and best in the business. However there are stories to be told about their roots as promoters of the Atlantis and their own 'Slam' parties in Glasgow in the 90's. 

As producers the pair continue to push boundaries, releasing music with great consistency, continually managing to reinvent and approach the studio in the pursuit of something new.

Slam: The Ransom Note Mix

Rumination, reflection, return. Such is the vernacular of winter, a moment to exhale, to glance behind as well as ahead. To commemorate this precious time we have a very special guest this month. Slam are so integral to electronic music culture that they hardly need an introduction. With over 100 releases under their belt, they have enthused the eager ears of their audience for over three decades and are still going strong today. Their label, Soma Records, has established itself as a consistent output of world-class music, while their weekly podcast series, Slam Radio, is arguably one of the most respected around. 

Normally found roaming the rougher-tinged arenas of music with harsh, jacking rhythms, here they have smoothed out their sound and gone down an alternative path. Serving as the first half of a two-part mix, Slam have once again showcased the breadth of their musical knowledge. Soaring through valleys of angelic synths and sighing strings, they arrive at a place at once familiar and yet completely foreign, concealed through passages of morphing, static noise. A truly engaging listen, and one perfectly fitting for this current moment of restless tranquility.

Scottish duo Slam, Stuart McMillan and Orde Meikle, are a tour de force on the global techno circuit. Their unique, six deck, back-to-back DJ performances have seen the duo play leading clubs and festivals across the world. They are renowned for both their experience and their powerful, contemporary sound. Listen to Soma Records' head honchos signature high energy and peak-time mix for this week's Global Vibe Radio. 

The last few years have seen some of Slam's most prolific studio output as they continue to innovate and keep things moving forward, most recently with the Louder Than Chaos project. Louder Than Chaos was a series of five releases on 12" vinyl and digital. Each volume released monthly via Soma Records, and available here: https://somarecords.com/shop/music/

The project kicked off with Vol. 1 featuring collaborations with 999999999, Hector Oaks and Keith Tucker (AKA Optic Nerve). Vol. 2 features collaborations with UK techno legend Perc, and Vol. 3 features long term Soma affiliate Rebekah. Vol. 4 with Belgium’s finest export Amelie Lens. Vol. 5 concluded Lounder Than Chaos, featuring the enigmatic Mancunian AnD. Each EP features specially commissioned artwork from German based artist PPP Panic, which consolidates into one constructive piece over the five releases.  

Besides heading Soma Records and spearheading projects, McMillan and Meikle are co-directors and co-curators of Glasgow's Riverside Festival. The festival showcases the best emerging local talent alongside some of the most established names in international techno. Scotland's premier electronic music festival returns on the Jubilee Bank Holiday Weekend, June 2 to June 4. The party will take place at the iconic Zaha Hadid-designed Riverside Museum on Glasgow’s Clydeside. This summer the legendary Slam Tent in Edinburgh also returns after a six year hiatus as Slam Events and Edinburgh promoters FLY join forces. The two fellas met in the late 1980s and started out as promoters & resident DJs in several clubs in Glasgow.

In the early 90s they co-founded the legendary @soma label, which now counts over 600 releases and is home to some of their biggest hits like „Lifetimes“, „Positive Education“ or „Eterna“ 🎇🤯  

Over the years they have gained a massive international following both due to the massive success of their countless releases, as well as their uncompromisingly energetic dj sets 🎹🎛️
