This week 6AM welcomes Brazilian master selector Bervon for the Guest Mix. Speaking on his special guest mix, Bervon says listeners should expect "a set some of my influences... mixing different techno sounds with darker, square, straight and introspective characteristics."

The ability to change people's emotions in a positive way is an essential quality for artists who want to truly connect with the crowd. Bervon, for example, understands that when he is called to take over the DJ booth, regardless of location, he has a mission to accomplish: to bring those ahead of him to his own universe, creating an intense environment where there are no boundaries for fun. He enjoys the bass and fast kicks of techno to exude a euphoric rhythm in his performances, precisely inserting the melodic and dark elements into the construction of his set, ensuring to select the right songs at the right time for the crowd. 

Those attributes are also present in his productions, which have garnered approval and signed by labels such as Egothermia Records (Netherlands), Ballroom Black (Germany), Cartel Recordings (Germany), Noise Music (Brazil), Hotstage Records (Brazil), Kaligo Records (Brazil) and Spliced Vinyl Recordings (Canada). Bervon, who has shared the stage with Christian Smith, Shall Ocin and Vinicius Honorio, had his track played by Wehbba, aside from performances at clubs such as Vibe, Inbox and Universo Paralello - at the festival's 20-year edition - today dreams of taking his music to Europe and spread his talent across Brazilian borders, carrying with him the knowledge and passion for techno.

6AM Guest Mix: Bervon

It started with an urge to play with sound, a DIY synth, and a desire to know more. After several years buried in books, manuals and patch cables, JakoJako was performing her first live sets around Berlin, and spending every spare penny on Eurorack modules. The passion became all consuming, and in 2017, she left her nursing career to work at the legendary Berlin synth shop Schneidersladen, where’s she’s been sharing her knowledge of tools and techniques with the city’s music makers ever since. 

Technique is no use without ideas to apply it to, and fortunately JakoJako has a natural supply. “When you hear a sound in the environment, say a car passing by, you don’t appreciate the complexity until you think how you might synthesise it.” She explains. “Then it becomes something abstract; a collection of modulated pitches and timbres. I love to listen to the world like this..”

Her approach may seem studious, but JakoJako uses this fluency in the language of sound to convey emotion, and each track is an experiment, with success based on the intensity of feeling it creates. Her debut EP “Aequilibration”, released in 2019 on Leisure System Records, showcased this explorative mindset, with four very different stylistic ideas tied together through emotive sound design, sharp production, and a strong sense of melody. 

The release was followed by a string of live gigs, performed with her modular system and Elektron boxes, including a release party at Berghain, playing a standout set alongside Ben UFO and Marie Davidson. 

With regular events disappearing in 2020, live music migrated online, finding a global audience in shared experience of isolation. After streaming a live set for HÖR Radio, she was invited to take part in an online event for Arté, hosted by Innervisions and United We Stream, alongside Amé and Frank Wiedermann. This led to a filmed live performance in her studio for Fact Magazine’s Patch Notes series, and an in-depth video feature for Electronic Beats, which together have over half a million views (and counting).

Offline, JakoJako has made good use of the time in her studio, producing tracks on compilations for B-Pitch Control and Figure Records, remixes for Crouds on Intumi, and most recently, for New Order on Mute Records. More solo work is in the pipeline too, including a new EP for Leisure System Records, due in mid  2021.

Function’s tale begins with a gregarious mother who would keep him occupied as rookie selector for neighbourhood gatherings while growing up in Brooklyn and New Jersey. Music was his world, and it wasn’t long before he found himself standing in awe before Jeff Mills in 90s NYC at the infamous nerve centre of Club Kid hedonism Limelight, where he went on to pick up a Thursday-night residency himself. Few DJs can claim to have been around during such a moment in club history, but ten years later came another. His friendships with Regis, Silent Servant and Female turned into the much acclaimed collective Sandwell District, a pivotal sound for an era that forced everyone’s attention towards Berlin. There he became Berghain resident and played a role in shaping the club’s fabled musical opus. In the years since (and following Sandwell’s dissolution) he’s matured in his own right, with a number of mesmeric releases (most recently ‘Green EP’ released on his self-run imprint Infrastructure back in May), collaborations with the likes of Vatican Shadow, Luke Slater and Steve Bicknell, a heavy touring schedule that criss-crosses the world at rapid clip and Bassiani residency to boot. Function’s techno is an ambient fog in which sinister arctic synths and perilous rhythms collide to produce an exquisite fusion that would be hard to mistake for anyone else. Those grainy textures, subterranean ripples and punishing kick drums are a hypnotic rework of his many influences: 90s loops with a more modern and sharper industrial edge. Bassiani Podcast 186 is an impassioned live-recording from the club that weaves through a number of hammering tracks and steadily climbs towards its furious climax. A hair-raising three-hour beast courtesy of this decorated techno behemoth.

Unless they’ve already bashed their skull in the system’s facade and got to taste the visceral high of sound flowing through their body. You think it’s an image, but the man is a literalist.

Slam (aka Stuart McMillan and Orde Meikle) are a tour de force on the global techno circuit. Their unique, six deck, back-to-back DJ performances have seen the duo play leading clubs and festivals across the world. They are renowned for both their experience and their powerful, contemporary sound. 

They are co-owners of Glasgow's Riverside Festival, and also host the legendary Maximum Pressure warehouse parties, which showcase the best emerging local talent alongside some of the most established names in international techno.

Their iconic Soma Records label boasts in excess of 600 releases, hosting Mcmillan and Meikle's own productions and many of today's most cutting-edge techno artists.

The last few years have seen some of the duo's most prolific studio output as they continue to innovate and keep things moving forward, most recently with the release of their experimental full length record Athenæum 101. In addition, Slam have also remixed tracks from the likes of Planetary Assault Systems, Clouds, Dax J, Damon Wild, Richie Hawtin, and Truncate, to name just a few. 

Slam also host one of Techno's most respected weekly podcasts, Slam Radio, which has now surpassed over 400 episodes. The show allows the duo to demonstrate their conviction to creating and promoting music and vibes that provide an antidote to the mainstream by inviting fellow artists from the vibrant Techno scene, from obscure names to current trailblazers.
