Acierate. [ˈæsɪəˌreɪt]. Verb (transitive). To convert (iron) into steel. That is at least what the Oxford English Dictionary might tell you if you searched for the meaning of this word. If you’d ask any raver from European Techno hotspots nowadays, like Berlin, Paris or Barcelona, who haven’t been hiding under rocks for the past few years, they might give you a different definition. They might tell you a story. A story about a DJ they can’t forget. A DJ who provided them with sonic experiences in a class of their own.

Drivy, aggressive synth leads, encased by hammering industrial tunes. Music, so energetic, so undeniably going forward that it almost hurts not dancing to it. Because that’s what Berlin born and bred Acierate is serving his audiences. The founder of SYNOID and resident of Berlin’s infamous Griessmuehle has a indisputable reputation for unapologetic DJ sets driven by an unquenchable thirst for rave. Not in the sense of bluntly sequencing matching records, but in building up musical narrations. Telling stories not with words but with synth lines, high hats, snares, and a hell of a lot of bassdrum. Converting sonic energy into physical movement. So, once again, what’s Acierate? A November mix by the Amsterdam-based acclaimed dj/producer Lossch (@lossch). You might remember this name for his opening set at our Acid Night edition at BASIS earlier this year. Now he's back once again for an Intercell podcast.

Lossch fell in love with techno when his brother started to give illegal raves in Amsterdam at the age of 15/16. Around this time, Lossch also started to visit lots of other techno-orientated events. Lossch found out he wanted to start DJ'ing, but he didn't want to DJ if he couldn't play his own tracks, so Lossch started producing. At the beginning of his musical development in producing & DJ’ing, Lossch listened to tracks by producers/DJs like Perc, Dax J, Adam X, Minimum Syndicat & Ansome. Lossch always liked obscure/harsh sounds, he can identify his own production as industrial but still melodic. At a point, lots of DJs started to mix industrial sounds with Trance, which he liked. Lossch is always looking for a little dreaminess when he searches for tracks. With all these influences, he started to develop his own sound. He loves the variations in the techno genre. Lots of different styles but still cohesive is what Lossch tried to aim for in this mix. The live-sets by Crystal Geometry inspire him a lot. At the moment, Lossch is also working on a live set which will be ready coming year.

Two like-minded shadows scouring through the night, distorted sounds hailing from the void, obscure images emerging out of the dark – a new musical formation has risen from the edge of our postmodern world: OVERDRIVE.

The musical duo, consisting of Synoid’s THAM and the Destroy To Rebuild head VII CIRCLE, have arrived to deliver some sorely needed sonic clarity to the raving nation. Processing the aching zeitgeist of this decade, the two artists have combined their technical craft and musical vision to create an artistic body of work second to few. Distorting sounds into a gaping pit of overwhelming sonic force, bending rhythms into patterns of ecstasy, multiplying harmonies, grooving them into the very present – OVERDRIVE is the name of the game.

What should you expect? – Unapologetic DJ sets, driven by an unquenchable thirst for rave. DJing, not understood as a blunt sequencing of matching records, but as building up musical narrations. Telling the stories of our youth, not with words but with synth lines, high hats, snares, and a hell of a lot of bass drum. Slam (aka Stuart McMillan and Orde Meikle) are a tour de force on the global techno circuit. Their unique, six deck, back-to-back DJ performances have seen the duo play leading clubs and festivals across the world. They are renowned for both their experience and their powerful, contemporary sound. 

They are co-owners of Glasgow's Riverside Festival, and also host the legendary Maximum Pressure warehouse parties, which showcase the best emerging local talent alongside some of the most established names in international techno.

Their iconic Soma Records label boasts in excess of 600 releases, hosting Mcmillan and Meikle's own productions and many of today's most cutting-edge techno artists.

The last few years have seen some of the duo's most prolific studio output as they continue to innovate and keep things moving forward, most recently with the release of their experimental full length record Athenæum 101. In addition, Slam have also remixed tracks from the likes of Planetary Assault Systems, Clouds, Dax J, Damon Wild, Richie Hawtin, and Truncate, to name just a few. 

Slam also host one of Techno's most respected weekly podcasts, Slam Radio, which has now surpassed over 400 episodes. The show allows the duo to demonstrate their conviction to creating and promoting music and vibes that provide an antidote to the mainstream by inviting fellow artists from the vibrant Techno scene, from obscure names to current trailblazers.
