For the last episode of the year, we invite Quelza. Following a quote from Eduard Bernstein "the goal is nothing, movement is everything", the artist created a cinematic and IDM-esque take on industrial and driving techno. With this unique take he gained a lot of momentum over the year with releases on KSR, Mord, Newrhythmic and HAYES. For this podcast, he decided to send in a recording from his set at Transformator in Poland. Kr!z joins for DifferentSound Podcast #211.

Kr!z has been at the forefront of techno for more than a decade. Influenced by the hypnotic and energetic sound helmed by veterans such as Jeff Mills, Steve Rachmad and James Ruskin, he gradually but steadily developed his own identity in the international techno scene. 

After making a name for himself as a skilled DJ with sharp focus and a quick mixing style in home country Belgium and the Netherlands, Kr!z launched Token Records in 2007. It has since been a leading outlet for heady, purist sounds. He rapidly established the label as a fixed value with a timeless and powerful sound and took it around the world with label nights on every continent. Token remains important in defining techno today - always straightforward, sometimes weird, often catchy – all under the helm of Kr!z as avid A&R.

After 12 years spent assiduously focused on curating the Token discography, showcasing artists he has nurtured and supported over this time, and incorporating the connoisseur’s knowledge and experience he has cultivated in his work as a DJ, 2019 saw the release of his long awaited debut EP on Token. ‘Mantra’ received high acclaim by both media and the scene's key DJ’s. This continued in 2020, when he released the track ‘Scorpion’s Tail’ on Voltage Imprint and ‘Malice’ & ‘Imperative Needs’ as part of a split EP with Pfirter on his MindTrip label. 2022 was his most prolific year to date with three full EPs seeing the light of day: ‘Neutrino EP’ on James Ruskin’s Blueprint Records, ‘The Tunnel’ on Setaoc Mass’ hotshot SK_eleven and ‘Atlantis’ on his own Token Records. In 2023 he released ‘Revelation’, his follow up on Blueprint.

As a DJ, Kr!z takes listeners on journey’s surpassing space and time. Led by deeply hypnotic grooves, syncopated rhythms and widely reverberating atmospheres, his desire to guide the dancefloor into unknown depths can be felt with every note. Intensities build up and collapse under his skillful hands, knowing what each knob twist will result in. Each set feels almost like a mathematical calculation, deciphering the code of collective ecstasy.

DifferentSound invites Kr!z / Podcast #211

Oliver Rosemann is a DJ and producer from Leipzig, who has been active since the 90’s. During this time, he has made his experience with timeless techno exactly in the time of its creation, which can be seen later in his productions and DJ Sets.

In the Leipzig scene he played numerous live sets in the early 2000s, including at the 1040, one of the legendary clubs of the time. Increasingly, he began to show himself in public not only as a pure live act but also as a track producer. He oriented himself out of the local scene and tried to place his music directly internationally. With the collaboration with MasCon called "dualit" he had first big releases on labels like Earwiggle, CLR or Fith Wall Records and also international gigs e.g. in Antwerp.

But after that his solo project should be in the foreground again. Oliver got his own EP on Sunil Sharpe's label Earwiggle. The "Pointing from the Moon EP" was released, which was the starting signal for numerous following releases. To date, there are close to 180 tracks and remixes, including 3 LPs, released on labels such as MindTrip, MORD Records, Warm Up Recordings, Pole Group, Stockholm LTD and many more.
Another promising collaboration was to follow. Pfirter and Oliver started producing together in 2019 and presented their first joint 4 tracker “Alpha EP” in 2020 on MindTrip Music and it was a huge success. To date, the collaboration of the two includes several releases and B2B DJ Sets and there will be a few more.

Oliver is also present on stage. Whether as a live act or as a DJ, he knows how to create a dark, driving, ecstatic atmosphere on dance floors. He has already proven this in clubs like Tresor Berlin, Distillery, Institut für Zukunft, About Blanc and also in other countries in Europe. Numerous podcasts recorded by him or live cuts from parties, which were released over the years by renowned crews such as "Reclaim Your City" or "Staub", show this.

In 2021 he founded his own record label "Recorded Things", which he now runs together with Sebastian Rothermel. Also, here, his sound, which he produces or DJs, is formative and reflects what kind of techno he stands for. The latest release here is a new collaboration between Oliver and Alexander Kowalski!

Denise Rabe´s experience in the Berlin techno scene as a booker, radio host, promoter and dj since she relocated to German capital drawn by the possibility of a life in music, is reflected in the pragmatic, grounded artist she became and the unique, original voice she’s developed as a producer.

Her approach and work ethic can be seen expressed on every release she’s done under her label, Rabe, where her music is matched with an equal amount of care, thought and work, in the vessels that contain it, within a coherent aesthetic and vision that informs music, artwork and presentation equally.

This has allowed her to recruit the artist who´s work resonates with her sensibility and can be heard in the remixes Rrose, Shxcxchcxsh, Headless Horseman, among others, have done for her releases on her and other labels.

Imprints such as Mutewax, who released her first 12’’ in 2015, ARTS where she quickly became one of the label´s staples and Stroboscopic Artifacts where she published ‘’Manifesto’’ in 2019, are clear reference points that describe her career and its development. 

Rabe’s particular inclination to sparse industrial soundscapes, gothic aesthetics, driven grooves under hooks that hypnotize as much as they distinguish, have propelled her 10 year career across stages all over the US, Asia and Europe, as well as the clubs that represent the apex of techno world wide such as Berghain and Tresor.

Slam (aka Stuart McMillan and Orde Meikle) are a tour de force on the global techno circuit. Their unique, six deck, back-to-back DJ performances have seen the duo play leading clubs and festivals across the world. They are renowned for both their experience and their powerful, contemporary sound. 

They are co-owners of Glasgow's Riverside Festival, and also host the legendary Maximum Pressure warehouse parties, which showcase the best emerging local talent alongside some of the most established names in international techno.

Their iconic Soma Records label boasts in excess of 600 releases, hosting Mcmillan and Meikle's own productions and many of today's most cutting-edge techno artists.

The last few years have seen some of the duo's most prolific studio output as they continue to innovate and keep things moving forward, most recently with the release of their experimental full length record Athenæum 101. In addition, Slam have also remixed tracks from the likes of Planetary Assault Systems, Clouds, Dax J, Damon Wild, Richie Hawtin, and Truncate, to name just a few. 

Slam also host one of Techno's most respected weekly podcasts, Slam Radio, which has now surpassed over 400 episodes. The show allows the duo to demonstrate their conviction to creating and promoting music and vibes that provide an antidote to the mainstream by inviting fellow artists from the vibrant Techno scene, from obscure names to current trailblazers.
