Tongue-in-cheek, new age trap producer 8prn creates alternative, clean, club music, sample his goods via this week's i-DJ.

Discovering a new, fully blown talent, lesser known in wider music circles feels special. Showcasing Inoj - Love You Down (8prn remix) via his fader mix earlier this year, Ryan Hemsworth drummed up some well deserved attention for fast rising producer, Patrick Holland. Repping a whole crew of talent coming straight out of the more typically suburban musical territories of Vancouver, change is on the rise for Canada. Raised on Bames, Falcons, Lunice, and Sango Holland, Patrick then got into old Triple 6, Koopsta Knicca, DJ Paul, and Juicy J and began working old southern triplet hi-hat and deep sub into his new age trap, 140 BPM signature sound. A fixture on the i-D stereo over the past few weeks, 8prn is a solid favourite with the team. Intrigued by where Patrick came from and who he surrounds himself by, we commissioned a mix and turned it around in 48 hours, complete with a couple of exclusive drops. 8prn: "I am a newcomer to the scene in Vancouver, but I have witnessed it unveil some incredible talent within the underground and mainstream worlds. There are a number of notable collectives/labels based here; Mood Hut, Lighta Sound, and Chapel Sound (which I am apart of), to name a few. Some of my favourite artists from the area include Falcons, Cyril Hahn, Evy Jane and Heartbeat(s). I feel music from here tends to have a darkness to it, influenced by the terrible weather that lasts for majority of the year. The club culture here is a little weak, due to shitty municipal laws, but it has forced people to start more after hours events and independent shows."

Solid Steel in association with Serato (23rd October) In Hour 2 it's a 'DJ Madd Re-Influenced mix' where the Hungarian artist drops a special mix looking back and deconstructing music he loved growing up. He told us;
"I had the idea to make an influences mix for some time but I wanted it to be a bit more special than a collection of tracks I listened to growing up. I came up with the idea to load the tracks into the software I write music in, and treating it as one long project the same way i write music: Adding and removing parts, leaving tracks playing or totally re-writing them. The selection had to be started with one of my earliest memories of music which was Paul Simon’s Graceland album which my mother used to listen to all the time. That definitely turned me onto african influenced music with the reggae and dub influences such as Bob Marley or The Specials soon to follow. As a teenager I was really into oldschool hip-hop and after I found out there is this crazy genre called jungle that uses sped-up hip-hop beats I was instantly hooked. I religiously followed early Bristol jungle and d&b, poking around old trip-hop, and discovering ragga-jungle through Congo Natty, where all these influences from dub / fast breaks and ragga vocals seem to come together. To this day these versions can only be heard in this mix and to keep it special, I think it will remain that way."

This year in Barcelona you may have heard some music in between the acts playing at <a href=http://www.redbullmusicacademy.com/events/sonar-2013-event>our SonarDôme stage</a>. These distinctive 15+ minute interstitials were produced by two 2011 graduates of the Academy, Scottish-born producer <a href=https://soundcloud.com/claudespeeed>Claude Speeed</a> and Japan’s <a href=https://soundcloud.com/yosi-horikawa>Yosi Horikawa</a>. Commissioned expressly for this purpose, they acted as comedown and come-up for the many acts that came through.

Insatiable explorateur musical depuis les années 90, Slamooh accomplit sa quête sonore à travers les genres et fait son possible pour en présenter les richesses en réalisant d'habiles assemblages. Absorbé très jeune par la musique électronique et la fusion des genres, fasciné par Amon Tobin, il ne cesse de chercher le mélange idéal qui fera voyager l'esprit. Sur le chemin, il aura la chance de rencontrer son comparse Fly-Abstract Softness et d'expérimenter, un peu plus, l'expansion de son univers musical. Il s'initie au DJing avec un objectif, sublimer ces années de recherche en assemblant délicatement les trouvailles et en les partageant. Aucune barrière, Downtempo, Abstract Hip Hop, Nu Jazz, Dubstep, Drum & Bass, Techno... Dénicher de trop discrètes pépites, les associer à de délicieux classiques, une appétissante recette pour swinguer et pour s'évader... En 2012, il s’allie avec Abstract Softness pour former le duo CALM&kind, une obsession : arranger « à 4 mains » leurs trouvailles musicales, avant tout pour les oreilles, pas seulement pour les jambes.
