Underground System returns to Razor-N-Tape with the Looking In EP - a 5-track offering of fresh originals and remixes. Ranging from low-slung balearic grooves, to driving left-field funk and urgent uptempo backbeats, the record is a fine-tuning of the US sound, complete with their signature flute and synth soundscapes, driving percussion, and catchy offbeat vocal hooks. On the B-side, RNT mainstays Nenor and Clive From Accounts take two of the tunes into clubbier territory, with a pair of remixes primed for the dance floor.

The latest chapter in the longstanding relationship between Gilles Peterson and the music of Cuba, it sees him explore the roots of rumba through a project comprising a feature-length documentary and a collection of remixes to be released in 2016.

Produced in collaboration with Cuban rum maker Havana Club – that created the Havana Cultura platform to promote contemporary Cuban culture –, it's another episode in a six-year relationship that's already given vital exposure to different aspects of Cuba's thriving music culture through the Havana Cultura album series.

*The acclaimed Havana Cultura album series – fruit of a collaboration between Gilles Peterson, Brownswood Recordings and Havana Club – includes two major collective productions, Havana Cultura: The New Cuba Sound (2009) and Havana Cultura: The Search Continues (2011); the Havana Cultura Sessions EPs featuring Danay Suárez (2010) and Daymé Arocena (2015); and two electronic music albums, Havana Cultura Remixed (2010) and Havana Cultura Mix: The Soundclash! (2014).

Rumba Version (Al Dobson Jr Remix)

Let's cut straight to the chase. 28-tracks worth of Al Dobson Jr. is way more than anyone could ask for. His experimentations on Rye Lane Volume I broke the ice on Bradley Zero's now high-soaring Rhythm Section imprint; an über-healthy collection of vibey, percussive-led percies that came out back in 2014.

Volumes II & III come together like Siamese twins and its more of the same; warm and fuzzy doodles from the South London beat merchant. Many of the tracks are under three minutes in length, but no less punchy because of it. 

Case study: "Xingu". A quick Google tells us that the Xingu people are the indigenous peoples of Brazil, a title which suits the track in question. Its multi-layered drum underbelly would be at home in the tropics. And when combined with those glistening keys and laissez-faire bass rhythm, it's nothing short of magic.
