For guest mix #112 I have the pleasure of hosting Heidi Emilia, an emerging local DJ-talent. Heidi Emilia is a designer, DJ, and host of the It’s Been Emotional show on IDA Helsinki. Heidi describes her sound as "emotionally driven, balancing between stripped back and atmospheric" and that's very much on point with the cosmic and atmospheric mix she recorded for DR.

We don't know a great deal about Volruptus to be honest.  We believe it to be one man, who is from Reykjavik, although his Facebook page suggests he might reside in Berlin.  For a bit more info into who exactly is behind the Volruptus moniker though, that's where his Facebook page stops being useful, stating simply "He brought the BASS from outer SPACE! 2 YER FACE!!! The Unruly and groovy. The sneaky and freaky. The Alien Boogie commander known as Volruptus is on a mission to make you move!".  

So let's focus on what we do know then.  We know that Volruptus's musical output has been absolutely impeccable, in just a few releases, he's defined a sound which takes influence from British rave culture, Detroit electro and more experimental sounds of the 90s but which is wholly his own.  Through releases on Sweaty Records, which may or may not be his own label, Nina Kraviz's, TRIP and fellow countryman, Bjarki's, bbbbbbb, Volruptus's music has managed to become cult in just two short years.  His records are collectables in the making, mysterious, intricate and futuristic whilst remaining undeniably dance floor.  It's probably no surprise that we see him work alongside Kraviz and Bjarki who seem to embody a similar mystique in what they do.  For his Dimensions mix Volruptus seriously delivers, with an hour of energetic but detailed pure space funk from a real life alien boogie commander.

For this month’s Carhartt WIP Radio show we bring you a selection of music produced by legendary Detroit musician Juan Atkins – a man who needs little  introduction. In the early 1980s, with his band Cybotron, Atkins developed proto-techno and later in the decade, he would go on to release music under the alias Model 500.

Alongside his school friends Kevin Saunderson and Derrick May, he defined the new dance music genre called techno, with milestones records like ‘”No UFO’s” put out on his very own label Metroplex.
 
For his Carhartt WIP Radio show, the so called “godfather of techno” conducted a mix that showcases early Cybotron works, Model 500 classics as well as tracks produced under other pseudonyms such as Infiniti.
