I'm proud to finally be at a place where I can start putting something together that is listenable...

Three of us were involved in putting the base of this together.
- Ike, Gav and me.
Each of us added some ear candy after that...
Once that had all happened, I knew what I wanted to add to the composition to pull it all together.

The track encapsulates my love of rolling bass lines and filling created space with off beat hats, kicks and synth.
- It's a foreshadowing of the kinds of sounds and tracks I want to produce.

There is far more where this came from.

Wow, wow, wow!

I have been a part of some amazing crews, building some amazing mutant vehicles, hosting the most incredible gatherings and pushing the most cutting edge sounds, but nothing has been quite like being part of the Space Cowboys.

I can safely say I have never been connected to such an impressive sound system, but it was the team that put it all together that really outshone that experience.

I have never felt such support from any group I've been part of. Every single member of the team is a master at their craft. Musically, technically, in theory and in practice.

Now, onto the music...
As promised, I am slowly but surely moving in a  direction which will result in me being a completely live act, and this was my first real attempt.

If you pay close attention, you can hear me trying my best to drop some MC licks...I promise I'll get better.

My track selection goes across 4 genres, namely;
Deep Tech, Dark Disco, Psychedelic Techno and of course, Driving techno.

I'm pleased to have laid down my own unreleased track, "Click". It actually sounded quite solid on that unreal sound system, which was amazing to hear.

It was really quite a surreal experience having the chance to play all the music I have been waiting to unleash at @afrikaburn for the past two years. 

The entire set is made up of predominantly my classic, driving techno sound, laced with some of my newer psychedelic sounds as well as a sprinkle of heavy metal.

Splicing together my love of techno and rock has been a goal of mine for a long, long time, and I'm really pleased that I managed to slip in a @slipknot track!

Aside from all that, I'm stoked to have ended off the set with one of my own tracks: IOSLEDGE, which will be released on @la-fruta-records later in 2022!

What a delight to finally debut on the absolute monster of a machine, The BoomiCorn - AfrikaBurn 2023! 🦄

Some of you may know that I was due to play on the Bass Beast at AfrikaBurn in 2022, but was FORCED to go to the hospital after destroying my ankle. (Worst part is the doctor, in essence, told me to walk it off!) 🚑

So yes, I am hella excited to finally get my shot. 🔥
Even though I didn't get a chance to play on The Boomicorn last year, I heard the bass from a country mile away. Seriously, seriously, seriously, it’s like that rig was built for me to play on. 🎶

So, with a year to plot, and to plan, and to scheme, and to practice, I collected a library of top flipping draw speakers and a couple of tricks which helped me deliver the hiding of a lifetime. 💥

The basic premise was to roll in at 122 bpm, get up to 125 bpm rather quickly, and play in key.

Basic stuff. 🔊
But, the focus was then on three aspects.

Purposefully catching loops that were too long or too short.
Keep driving the bass of the outgoing track until the police came to shut me down.
Pitch bending myself into a different reality. 🌌
All of which I executed rather well, and I am over the moon with how it has turned out. 🌕

Before I started playing, my new(ish) good friend Rich came to me and said, “Jeff, we have two hours left on these batteries, can you drain them?” 💪

My response was, “Fuck yes I can drain your batteries” 💥

I drained them in 1 hour and 30 minutes. Powerful stuff if you ask me. ⚡

There is only really one thing I have to say about this one.

That was JOLLY GOOD! 🤘

I honestly don't have the words to express how grateful I am to have found this style of music, and to be literally working with some of my favourite artists and producers, and it looks like the best is yet to come.

10 flipping years! 🥳
Well flipping done. 👏
It has been a privilege and an honour to have been even a small part of the story with The Pancake People. 🥞❤️

Not many people know that my first real encounter with The Pancake People happened in 2016, when I met my good friend Naz, along with his crew. At the time, I was the resident sledgehammer man (where my name comes from) and beginner electro-swing DJ, just starting out with my first camp, “The Alenz Coffee Shop.” 🎶🔨

Since then, I've grown a deep friendship with Naz and his pancake-flipping army. 

They have watched me fall in love, mourn the loss of that love, celebrate the formation of a new one, and now, clench my fists while I learn to love myself. 💔❤️‍🩹💪

The music contained in this mix is a collection from the full 10 years that The Pancake People have been flipping. I suppose it was meant to be, at least that's how it felt when Naz asked me to play the opening party on Tuesday morning at Burn this year. 🎵🔥

AfrikaBurn 2024 - The Pancake People - X

Most people know my music to be bloodthirsty.
However, slower, swampier emotional music is actually where I am happiest. 
I find ways to express myself at this tempo that I cannot do through words.

You can imagine how happy I was when my new, but dear, friend Sheri asked me specifically to play this kind of music on the Flying Dutchman.

The morning of Wednesday at AfrikaBurn I woke up feeling an electric energy in the air. ⚡
To say I was excited is an understatement.
Before long I was officially welcomed in by Eddy the desert pirate queen 👑. 

The plan was set, dinner was had, friends were made, and off I trod back home to get ready.

If I dare say so myself, my set went off. It came out better than I had planned. This set was by far the one I planned for the most. 
Around 12H of pure planning before I even got to the desert.

I feel an overwhelming amount of privilege having been given the honour of playing on the Dutchman and being given the opportunity to meet and work with their amazing team and a few very very very talented artists 🎨.

To the friends who are becoming my family 🫶 
I salute you. 
See you in Aus 🦘

AfrikaBurn 2024 - The Flying Dutchman - Wednesday Night

A concept I've been toying with for the past couple of months.
A concept that was only put into words post-AfrikaBurn this year. 
A concept that resonates with me.
A big people's word for enthusiasm!
- My favourite word.

And boy, that was a hell of an enthusiastic show!
I wish more than anything that I could aptly describe or even share what it feels like to be surrounded by so much energy coming from so many people.
To see their souls carrying their bodies. Moving them. Dancing through them.

A lot of effort went into this performance, as I usually do with performances of this size. The primary difference is that I am coming closer and closer to having a fully integrated live element to my set, that produces 50% of the sound or more. 
This time around, I managed to hook up my synthesizer. (Fucking beast)
It was as powerful as I hoped it would be. I could see people reacting to the tiniest changes I made to the really low-end frequencies.

The set is constructed of around 8 movements. If you pay attention you will hear them changing. 
I won't bore you with the particulars, but I think it to be one of the most epic stories I have strung together to date. 

Huge thank you to the @youknowthespacecowboys, without whom I would be years behind where I am today.
Truly the most amazing group of ladies and gentlemen I have ever come across.
Their unwavering belief in me, and their willingness not only to give me these incredible chances but to teach me how it is done with love and care is beyond belief.
I am truly humbled to call myself a Space Cowboy and to call the Space Cowboys my friends.

When I played it live, it was 3h long. Unfortunately, this was not the year for live recording. But, I'm reasonably happy with how the studio version has come out. 
This is the last time I rely on someone else to record my music.

Thank you to Anni and the whole crew at Sexico City! Sensational!

This was the one, at AfrikaBurn this year, for me.
I put a lot of man-hours into constructing it, and was really lucky to have access to some super duper unreleased gems as well as some that were hot off the press!

This was the kind of production where I got a bunch of tracks that I knew I liked, but wasn't 100% familiar with, so as I was playing them, it was the first time I was really listening to them.

I've been experimenting with jabbing a filter, turned up to like 80%.
If you listen, you will hear it. Sounds a bit like a great shift. Quite sick.
- Also a good amount of pitch bend. 

 I am really happy with the way it came out.

My highlight of every year. 
- This year was different...

I finally got my shot at closing The Space Cowboys!
Last man standing at 7 am on the Sunday at AfrikaBurn. 
- Special shoutout to Steph for being with me the whole time. You're a legend bru. 

Straight into the music. 
Spending seven months in Australia in 2024 gave me a world of inspiration. 
- Spending time with their people, learning their culture, listening to their absolutely fucking spanking music.
- This is the culmination of what I heard.

Decompression XXV - Castle of Good Hope

Friday mornings at The Pancake People. 
Without a shadow of a doubt, my favourite dusty tradition. 

Every year brings its own stories, memories and quirks. 
Over time, and as it grew into a tradition, it's become more and more organised, efficient and fun!

This year was my shortest trip to the desert, arriving only on Thursday evening. Staying true to form, I crammed in as much music, mischief and mayhem into my short stay.

Step 1. 
Send it all night.

Step 2.
Arrive bright and early at my post, The Pancake People, at 8 am.

Step 3.
Slam some electroswing and eat pancakes with my friends.

Seemed simple enough...
The only problem was that I was 2 hours early...
Lucky for me, I was at AfrikaBurn!
So I took a stroll up the Binnekring and landed up at Bubbles and Bass.
Lekker morning joll. The sun was shining, the champagne was flowing, and the beats were stanky. 
I took a look at the lineup and saw a name that I had seen many times before, but never had the pleasure of meeting. "Rogue Fire".

So I asked around a little, and found him.
We had a little chin wag, sharing a love for music.
Toward the end of the conversation, a lightbulb went off.
- "This guy plays the sax...I'm about to slam some electroswing...let's just ask..."

And so a plan was formed. At some point in the following 3 hours, he was going to roll in and unleash some unplugged sax. Epic. 

So off I stroll back to The Pancake People to get started.
It is now 10:50.

Pop my head back into the tent, and as I do, like a bear from a cave, Naz strides out of his tent. 
- "The Burn is COMPLETE", he exclaims, as our eyes lock for the first time. 
- Big hug, quick chat, and off we go. 
- I feel tremendously lucky to have the opportunity to share this music that I love so much with people who really, really enjoy it, all while watching the terrific show The Pancake People put on every day. 

The show goes on, we eat pancakes, we swing.
- There was a part of the show which was fun.
- "Who wants to get spanked by the DJ?". There were a couple of takers. I hope that becomes a tradition...
- P.S.) To the lady who asked me to give her an 11/10, I'm sorry I listened. I hope you made a full recovery. 

As the show was winding down, in pops our new friend, Rogue Fire. 
- I kinda forgot he was coming, so it was a super surprise!
- Obviously, he stole the show, but he made it very, very, extremely memorable!
