L3DNB - Sleep Less Records -Fall 2016

The brainchild of former Viper Recordings artist MC SAS, Sleep Less Records has emerged from its beginnings in 2012 as an independent Drum & Bass and Dubstep Record label to produce a plethora of exciting, homegrown talent. Following years of working their A&R skillset over the two electronic genres, they’ve pulled out talented newcomers and have allowed them to shine through with their music alongside their next compilation LP. The 11th part of their expanding discography features the artists who’ve specifically put Sleep Less Records on the map, hitting every niche on the dance music spectrum and epitomising how diverse the electronic music landscape really is.

Kumarachi comes first with ‘Vigilante’, a clucking, rolling drum & bass anthem which takes you deep down into the underground. Up next, EKTO comes next with two of his own selections, including the jungle, break heavy record ‘The Puzzle’ and the distorted, angrily driving sounds of ‘Succubus’. Scartip brings the heat with sonic, bass-heavy nightmare ‘Entertaining Hodgson’, whilst percussion lead ‘Black Ball Snub’ and the crashing hi-hats of ‘The Dark Place’ continue to peddle his murky production standard. ‘Educating Others’ is his final offering, a moody, brooding number that snaps at you with each blast of its lumbering drum patterns.

Signal Fista brings the same vibe with the powerful subs and dancefloor rhythm of ‘The Good Old Days’ Stand-alone offerings ‘Pick it Up’, and ‘It Hates You’ once again bringing that snapping, battering undercurrent, whilst his collaboration with Push Posh for ‘Jinn Rising’ moves out on intimidating sample snippets and clattering kick. Dizbelief follows with his segment, presenting the ricocheting, aurally intrusive ‘Fire Fight’, succeeded by the blasting ‘Ghost Enemies’ and the crushing ‘Oblivion is at Hand’ with its distorted vocals. His final delivery is with ‘Fates Gates’, pouring forward through its energetic, warbling tones. And lastly, Kumarachi finishes the album with ‘Litmus’, which crafts note arpeggios into a climatic drop that takes you down with it. ‘Litmus’ stands for everything Sleep Less Records are about and it’s the perfect track to finish on. It’s a cut that merges a diverse repertoire of sound, the kind of musicality which the imprint upholds as their ethos.

The first mix for Sleep Less Records from the man himself Kumarachi.

Kumarachi started producing with Nottingham based Hip hop innovater Pete 1st Blood, and found more than a passing interest in fusing genres together. Whether it be the Hiphop, Drum & Bass and other electronic elements of his productions with 1st Blood, or the traditional Indian sounds and Dubstep of some of Kumarachi’s tracks there is usually a varied pallet of sounds involved. 1st Blood originally signed to Tricky and Chris Blackwell’s “Brownpunk” Label and “Blue Mountain” publishing. Kumarachi still actively collaborates as part of 1st Blood and is part of the 1st blood live band.

2011 began with a huge show of support for Kumarachi from BBC Radio, with Bobby Friction championing Kumarachi on his BBC Asian Network show. The tracks “Bombay Sapphire”, “Keep Moving”, “Return”, ”Chasing Ghosts”, ”Midnight”, ”Chrysalis” and “Satellite” have all been play listed and on heavy rotation on Bobby Friction’s and DJ Kayper’s BBC Asian Network shows. This support also lead to Kumarachi earning a feature as a BBC Introducing Artist in January of 2011, being asked to do a 30 minute guest mix feature on the Friction Show and a “Friction Lab” remix feature as well as “Return” being played on BBC Radio 1 by Huw Stephens. 

“..After hearing that, if i ever meet him I’m going to fall at his feet sobbing.” - BBC’s Bobby Friction after hearing “Keep Moving” by Kumarachi.

Towards the end of 2011 BBC 1XTRA’s DJ Q has been supporting Kumarachi’s remix of fellow Nottingham artist Nina Smith’s - “Lonely Heart Club” on his 1XTRA UKG M1X show and is promising to support well into 2012.

Rinse FM DJ’s Allbury and SK Vibemaker have also been supporting Kumarachi over the past year, most recently the track “Street lights” (with Roy Merchant and Grainne O’Neill) which has also featured on an MSN advert ( www.bringyourworldtolife.com ) and been published and released by KPM Music LTD.

Kumarachi’s Drum & Bass has also received great support on Bassdrive Radio from Komatic (Spearhead + Technique Records) playing tracks “Make Your Way”, “Someday”, “I Want To Stay”, “July” and “World Without You” as has Fiasco on Passion Radio Bristol.

Kumarachi is also a resident DJ on Rogue FM (www.roguefm.com), each week the show aims to showcase new Drum & Bass, Dubstep and Bass music in general. It also gives Kumarachi a platform to give give new, unheard and up and coming producers who’s music he likes some airplay alongside more familiar names.

Live DJ performance’s over the past year have included shows at some of Nottingham’s smaller venues like Ride Bar and Nottingham Contemporary to the bigger Nottingham clubs Stealth and Gatecrasher at nights such as Louder, Rogue FM nights and the now legendary Basslaced.


On going projects include collaborations, remixes and upcoming releases and on K-Bomb Music and new Liverpool based label Sleepless Records in 2012.

Northern junglists North Base will release their double A-­side  debut single.

North Base have grown to be a consistent big player on the festival scene. Their recent single, “Acid Flashback”, saw the awakening of a wake a sleeping giant. People are now beginning to remember where drum and bass started and the genre is taking a steady turn towards home: where North Base are waiting with their feet up by the fire.

The first track of their double A-­‐side, “Strawberry Shields”, is an amen riddled stormer of a track. The old-­‐skool jungle vibes are rife, and though that is what people have come to expect from North Base, this release is definitely something that everyone should hear. “The Future” is a bass heavy steamrolling steppa that pulverises the eardrums and forces people to move in enlightened ways.

So who is Micheal Seary? 

After Starting to produce Hip Hop music in 2008 Michael's main focus over the past few years has been hard dirty Dubstep to say the least.

The young Liverpool based producer chooses to frequently switch up his style by producing various other genres such as D&B, House to keep his style fresh and forward thinking. 

He has gradually gained world wide recognition for his work from the likes of SikSoul Promotions, Dubstep24 and UKDrop among many others.

The young talented producer has been posting tutorials for the past few years and grown himself a nice little reputation for helping other producer learn the skills he has picked up.

With support in 2012 from Radio 1 and 1xtra in the form of air this is one producer on his way to big things.

Zuna Artist Feature ....

My mum has always been extremely creative and musical, she sung and wrote songs solo  in bands since I can remember. She actually took a stereo (which she had pat tested) into the hospital to play Stevie Wonder whilst she gave birth to me. Hence some of the first artists I remember listening to were Stevie Wonder, Louis Armstrong, India Irie and more only wonderful artists. I was played a lot of different genres which I’ve tried continue. Music has been one of the main elements of my life ever since.

I’d always wanted a creative career, I decided to take the career path of acting through Drama School a few years back. Alongside this I’d always loved the idea of producing using software to literally create anything you wanted. I had a small dabble on Logic at one point but the time just wasn’t right and I never got the nak. At the start of lockdown, back in April, I managed to get my hands on the gloriously shitty Numark Party Mix. I was on them for a couple of months but I knew depending on how fast I learnt that I needed to upgrade ASAP. Economically I didn’t want to be spending a few hundred every time I wanted to upgrade. So I now own the beautiful Pioneer DDJ 800s which I only intend to learn as much as I can as time goes on. And we’ll look at beyond that when we get to it.

My first gig was in Nottingham at Rock City with my mum and we went to see Imelda May, an amazing rockabilly revival. I went to gigs with my mum for a while before I went with anyone else and I loved it. We danced our socks off seeing Basement Jaxx and managed to get Kano’s t-shirt after moshing at the Plug. We had fun.

I love a good bootleg yes! The Whitney Houston and Amerie bootlegs I’ve previously used in mixes were no brainers. Whether you churn out rollers all day or not, everyone loves a good sing song to a classic. I think it’s important to try and grab the attention of the listener with something that’s really going to make their ears prick. I think bootlegs are perfect for this.

Some of my favourite hometown venues in Sheffield would definitely have to be the likes of Yellow Arch, Hope Works, Dina and Hex. I’ve had some of my best nights/events at these venues, needless to say they all put on a banging night if you want a pRoPA skank.

I’d definitely say my goals as a DJ are long term if I could even label myself as a DJ yet haha. Alongside my career in acting that I am perusing I’m hoping that the two will fit in quite nicely together. Ive got a lot of grinding to do first though.
