Across ten songs, Sleep D take us from the deep desert chug of “Red Rocks”, through the center of the best rave in town with “Danza Mart”, and “Central”, past a head-trip of styles in the deep core, and ease us back down to some kind of new earth in the final songs, including “Morning Sequence”, a beaut’ of a track featuring Kuniyuki. When it’s all said and done its big smiles and fuzzy heads all around— we’ve said it once and we’ll say it again - rated “E” for Everyone.

Otik's debut on Aus Music, the Xoul Trap EP back in May 2023, showcased his unique blend of atmospheric and breakbeat-powered techno. It is one of many releases over the last decade that have helped establish Ashley Thomas as an artist with a left-of-centre perspective. As well as curating his own Solar Body label he has dropped his singer sounds on Mall Grab's Steel City Dance Discs and Martyn's 3024, where he served up his debut album Cosmosis late in 2024. 

The lush 'Retrograde' is doused in loved-up synth layers and beautiful arps that swirl around a dusty, driving beat. The celestial charm is heightened with angelic vocal motifs that drift through the mix as the lo-fi drums drive on and lock you into a hazy trance.  
'X-Dream' is another melodic masterclass, this time with a garage-tinged and shuffling groove. Gorgeously tender keys rain down from above next to more echoing vocal coos and heavenly synth smears. The whole thing has a hint of melancholy that makes for an even more lasting impact.

Make Me (Sofia Kourtesis Remix)

Some thoughts don’t leave you. Some questions linger long after they’ve been asked. Dom Apes’ Wasted Energy EP exists in that space between contemplation and release, between old cycles and new perspectives. Written during a period of upheaval, the record reflects on loss, rejection, and uncertainty, but also on clarity, reinvention, and quiet hope.
The title track, Wasted Energy, takes inspiration from an old Alfred Hitchcock interview where the director distills hatred into what it is: energy, wasted. Built around punchy breaks and widescreen melodies, the track provides both release and a statement: a rejection of toxicity in favour of creativity, connection, and forward motion.

Sidelined moves in a different way. Rooted in feelings of rejection and isolation, it builds from curious, melancholic synth plucks salvaged from abandoned lockdown projects fragments of the past, given new life. It leans into a sense of quiet reflection, yet there’s something undeniable in its purposeful forward motion.

The EP rounds off with Fuelless Consumption, which came together on a sober Friday night, written as Dom questioned whether music would still hit the same without the crutch of alcohol. A swelling, introspective closer, it leans into deep, somber textures, like coming up for air after a long night out. It shifts the energy just enough to feel like an ending, but one that leaves the door slightly open.

Created between London and the North East, Wasted Energy sits in the push and pull between movement and stillness, between city life and solitude. It’s the sound of memories resurfacing, of lost ideas finding a new home, and of music acting as both an anchor and a release.

Sonic explorers, label heads, pillars of the Melbourne/Naarm underground, Sleep D explore the rave unconscious - driving rhythms, hypnotic bass, worlds of echo and the hazy bliss of the morning after. Childhood friends with Iraqi and Maltese lineage, the duo and their legacy building Butter Sessions label have ushered in a new era, sensibility and productivity to the city that raised them.

A defiantly DIY two-man assembly line, Maryos Syawish and Corey Kikos have issued a steady stream of diverse records on their own imprint, as well as on like-minded international outposts Incienso, Planet Euphorique and Cocktail d'Amore. Releasing ‘Rebel Force’ in 2019 and ‘Electronic Arts’ in 2023, their albums bind a singular take on mutated house, bush doof, dub techno and downtempo, while their composition and production capacity has also been augmented via 2021’s chamber orchestra collaboration ‘Flashed Glass’ and the rescored film soundtracks for ‘Eraserhead’ and ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’.

With long-standing DJ residencies and an ever evolving live show fit for both clubs and vast paddocks, the dexterous duo’s alchemy has energised hordes across the US, UK, Europe, Asia and Australia.
