Italian producer Lamusa II was very busy at the Academy, both collaborating with fellow Academy participants and holing up in the studio alone. “Ritmo 69 (Atmosfera Mix)” is one of said solo affairs, a seven-minute synth odyssey that is at once a reverent throwback and a genre-expanding step forward. His affinity for vintage gear on full display, Lamusa II uses a pulsing synth rhythm as the backdrop for his steely, almost tropical percussion. In doing so, he creates a suite that feels both indebted to Moroder and undeniably modern.

The dinner was a sophisticated affair, anybody who was anybody was in attendance. These soirees were an opportunity to gloat, to boast about their wealth and good fortune. Across the room people eyeballed one another, looking each other up and down as if to assess their right to be in there. Each and every person had waited all year for this event to do just that, to justify their position in society and shout about their various accolades. It had become their obsession, their sole purpose.

Optimo's next release comes from newcomer Frank Rodas, a London-based DJ and label owner of Out The Flat alongside Bogdan Dražić. His debut five tracker on the Glaswegian imprint blends a wealth of influences like early acid house, electro, italo disco and early industrial to lower bpm EBM & Hague style electro which shines on our pick, closing number Obsess.

To celebrate five years of her label Love On The Rocks, Berlin-based DJ Paramida has compiled an LP featuring both new and returning artists. For 'Supergau' - meaning "a disaster beyond all expectations" - she brings together a stellar cast of producers including Francis Inferno Orchestra, Violet, Etbonz and Kornél Kovács to explore the boundaries between disco, acid, house and new wave.

Sonic explorers, label heads, pillars of the Melbourne/Naarm underground, Sleep D explore the rave unconscious - driving rhythms, hypnotic bass, worlds of echo and the hazy bliss of the morning after. Childhood friends with Iraqi and Maltese lineage, the duo and their legacy building Butter Sessions label have ushered in a new era, sensibility and productivity to the city that raised them.

A defiantly DIY two-man assembly line, Maryos Syawish and Corey Kikos have issued a steady stream of diverse records on their own imprint, as well as on like-minded international outposts Incienso, Planet Euphorique and Cocktail d'Amore. Releasing ‘Rebel Force’ in 2019 and ‘Electronic Arts’ in 2023, their albums bind a singular take on mutated house, bush doof, dub techno and downtempo, while their composition and production capacity has also been augmented via 2021’s chamber orchestra collaboration ‘Flashed Glass’ and the rescored film soundtracks for ‘Eraserhead’ and ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’.

With long-standing DJ residencies and an ever evolving live show fit for both clubs and vast paddocks, the dexterous duo’s alchemy has energised hordes across the US, UK, Europe, Asia and Australia.
