In typically thrilling form, Tiger Stripes returns for his annual outing on Drumcode. 

His ‘Rocket’ EP was conceived during the pandemic as the Swede busied himself with paternity leave and taking care of his little tiger. During these fulfilling stretches of time, the pair immersed themselves in everything from Aphex Twin to Kelly Lee Owens and Yazoo, while at other times the Spotify playlists Electronic Rising and Altar would frequently soundtrack their playtime. The producer took this spirit with him into the studio, aiming to harness the positive energy of his reference points and combine it with his signature brand of multi-faceted techno. 

The EP opens with the title track, marked with a distinct UK flavour and packed full of late ‘90s dance energy. Its uplifting chord progression and tidy breakbeat interlude imbue it with plenty of warmth and colour. ‘Fire’ is a sharp attitude-fuelled cut driven by a heavy bottom-end and zippy percussion, while a bad arse hoover dominates proceedings. The muscular ‘Your Love’ is comprised of multi-layered bass stabs and catchy vocal licks, which combine for an arresting finish. ‘Song for Debbie’ rounds out the package, a marriage of dream pop and woozy late-night techno. This is Tiger Stripes at his transcendent best.

Encroaching on the pinnacle of success, the release of In Memoro marks a seminal point in the duo’s career. Having delivered a consistent stream of hit records for the underground community, the pair’s inaugural album showcases their production efforts on the global stage, expanding on their flourishing discography in conceptual style. Representing some of their most daring and progressive opuses to date, In Memoro’s collection of tracks give us a more realised impression of the duo’s unrelenting creativity and ability to not only create peak-time worthy records, but to produce with ‘the journey’ in mind. Clocking countless studio hours over the past three years, Joyhauser’s debut 12” is a record that has been eagerly awaited by the modern audience for some time, and it doesn’t fail to deliver.

The previously released Wasted, Liberty and Bassdrone welcomed huge support across the club and festival circuits, entering the touring playlists of almost every major DJ in the scape. Fuelled by unrelenting drum patterns, hearty kicks and rapturous melodies, the cuts proved to be the anthemic gems of 2022/2023 and resumed their top charting placements respectively.

To the excitement of long-standing fans, In Memoro features a whole host of domineering techno hits that champion the stylistic leanings we’ve come to know and love from the pair. LXR02 is one of these offerings. Upping the tempo, Joyhauser shine a spotlight on their signature sound, delivering high-impact cosmic synth work and a meaty kick drum; attributes that have labelled them masters of their craft. The feisty Hemera sets an authoritative tone from the off, presenting a powerful synth lead and rave stabs that celebrate the sweet spot between techno’s foundational records and its modern sensibilities. These same dynamic characteristics can be found within Roam Zwei, Pulsar, Lightbringers and A Beautiful End Of The World, making them the heroes of festival season and serving as essential additions to the duo’s impeccable back catalogue.  

Woven between the album’s peak-time worthy hits are a series of ambient and crossbreed offerings that present an entirely new perspective to Joyhauser’s sound palate. The opening cut Leben welcomes the album in cinematic style, providing listeners with a deeply emotive introduction to this compelling body of work. Hints of vocal chops and an impressive synth riff enter the space, bending between old school rave and acid influences before erupting into a climactic breakbeat moment. Expanding on this alternative musical direction and showing their immense versatility in the studio, the duo treat us to another breakbeat number in Anamorphic. Cross-pollinating these percussive influences with techno-leaning synth work, world-music vocal injections and dreamy soundscapes, Joyhauser deliver a refined hybrid production that’s littered with grand apex moments. The stunning Astral Projection, gives us a moment of reflection between the bellowing techno cuts. As its name suggests, the pair provide us with serene soundscapes and high twinkling synths, introducing a warmly familiar breakbeat foundation that will leave audiences wanting more from this sound profile.

“Der Sturm Kommt” is German for the "storm is coming“, and the name of Michael Klein’s new EP could apply as equally to the artist as to his music. In the past two years especially, Klein’s career trajectory has skyrocketed thanks to the ever-increasing quality of his output. His tracks have been hand-picked for compilations by Amelie Lens and Cocoon honcho Sven Väth while his productions are supported by big-hitters including Laurent Garnier, Dubfire and of course Pan-Pot, the owners of his home-label Second State.

On his latest EP, the storm is coming quite literally in form of three high-energy bangers that help establish Klein as one of techno’s most reliable party-starters. The title track recreates the mood of an actual storm, opening with grey squall before the heavens open in a downpour of android-like vocals, high-volume distortions, a relentless kick and a build and drop sure to blow up any club it’s played in. Rather than dial it back on Wasser (meaning water), Klein keeps the heat turned right up, deploying a snarling acidic bassline recalling the best of International Deejay Gigolo Records and adding his own stamp in the form of a characterful dog-like bark. German for “when you scream”, Wenn Du Schreist is, as its name suggests, the most ominous-sounding of the lot. There’s a dark energy to the production, with spooky treated vocals and rubbery synths creating a nefarious atmosphere. Importantly though, like everything on this EP, the track still bangs.

Der Sturm Kommt is another package of high-BPM floor-scorchers from one of the hottest names on the scene today. With every release, Klein just gets harder, better, faster and stronger.

If you want a snapshot of where techno stands in any given year, and a preview of where it’s headed, look no further than Drumcode’s A-Sides compilation. Since 2012 it has marked the label debuts of countless vital Drumcode artists and affiliates, from Layton Giordani, Wehbba and Boxia, to Amelie Lens and ANNA, no less. Every year, new names are unearthed, tried and true techno contributors serve up their best, and icons of the industry land their debut on Adam Beyer’s storied label.

The 2020 edition hits with 13 tracks, eight coming from label debutants. There’s Eats Everything searing rave bomb ‘Organico’ and Dubfire’s ice-cool electro offering ‘Deadbug’, both artists landing their maiden contributions to DC after long affiliations with Beyer. With three EPs in less than two years on Truesoul, Oscar L steps up to DC, showing the breadth of his sound palette with a soaring, synth-laden gem ‘Dark Fate’. Belgians Joyhauser featured at last year’s Drumcode Festival paving the way for ‘Fierceness’, a beautiful melody-drenched cut befitting their DC cap. Anfisa Letyago is another first timer and shows why she’s one of the scene’s most highly touted new artists with the brooding beast ‘Are You In’. A growing label favourite, Juliet Fox follows up ‘Was Beautiful’, her superb track on last year’s A-Sides, with ‘Our Fantasy’, reinforcing her skill for crafting anthemic techno compositions. Thomas Schumacher & Victor Ruiz link and the result is ‘Intuit’, a sleek futuristic roller that hits you square between the eyes. Other highlights come from longtime Drumcode cohorts Reset Robot and Harvey McKay, who both dish up premium works, reinforcing their classy productions nous.
