Sleepspent’s latest single “Noise” begins with a bombardment of the senses—a blast of layered, tight fuzz guitars ripping over booming drums and a driving bass line that soon give way to swells of ambient guitar and the rich vocals of 22-year-old frontman Austin North. 

“Noise is an important song for me, personally. Writing it was my way of acknowledging my experiences as a gay man, and how my own internalized feelings about my sexuality have developed as I’ve grown. The song explores the idea of being in the closet, having to hide a key part of your identity, when you so desperately want to express yourself—both from an internal perspective and from an external perspective.” 

As the song progresses, it blooms into a full-on dance-groove to introduce the key line in the song, “Are you thinking about boys? I know the feeling and it’s all noise.” North said, “I think that line lays it all out. I felt the need to express myself from the anxieties and uncertainties inherent in growing up confused about your sexuality, to the sudden realization that one has to take control of their life and own who they are.”

The band last released their last standalone Chris Common (Chelsea Wolfe, Le Butcherettes, Minus The Bear)-produced single “California” in November, premiered by Substream Magazine. It can be heard on all streaming services. Sleepspent, with their “mesmerizing sound,” as described by El Paso, Inc., recently wrapped up a in February 2019, and will be headed back on tour in March. 

In May of 2018, they released their debut EP “It’s Better If You Don’t Speak Or Think,” garnering attention from national and international publications. The band’s wall-of-sound style, with their driving grooves and surprising chord progressions, has also captured local attention — particularly due to North’s vocals, which El Paso, Inc. described as “soaring [and] emotive,” and The City Magazine compared to the vocals of the late Jeff Buckley.
