Deep House

From its humble beginnings in 2001, the Brooklyn label Bastard Jazz Recordings has trailblazed a unique path in the world of independent record labels. Appealing to both DJs and music fans from all walks of life, BJR has become known for its eclectic sound & community of global artists from Mumbai to Napoli, New York to Kinshasha, who touch on everything from funk to hip-hop, house music to forward thinking beats, soul to jazz and international sounds, along with its unrelenting commitment to the vinyl medium. This November, the label will be celebrating 20 years of operation in various incarnations and are releasing a special compilation and a DJ friendly 4xLP titled ’20 Years of Bastard Jazz’ filled with brand new cuts from its current roster, plus a selection of catalog material, some of it classic, some of it overlooked, and some of it unpressed. 

Highlights from the compilation include Australian outfit The Goods, who team up with Steve Spacek (famously of the eponymous British band) on the spacey future soul banger, “FEELS 4 U,” while label stalwarts Potatohead People (who recently teamed up with both De La Soul, Jazzy Jeff, and Kaidi Tatham as well as a host of others on their new album) deliver “Bonzai View,” with its live instrumentation & technical prowess fused with a head-nodding boom-bap beat the group has become known for. Pittsburgh producer Buscrates delivers “Spotlight,” a slinky modern funk / boogie production, while brand new signing POSY gives us “Amai,” a delicate beat construction with gorgeous strings, horns and live bass weaving in and out. 

Notable past catalog on the compilation include LA producer Captain Planet’s classic “Un Poquito Mas” featuring Chico Mann (Antibalas, Here Lies Man) which is still being sung along to in clubs worldwide from Mexico City to Berlin 7 years later, and the airy, indie dance vibes of Manatee Commune’s “Majestic Diver.” Los Angeles producer and talkbox wizard B. Bravo’s “Can’t Keep My Hands Off You” featuring Reva Devito goes into more sultry territory, while Rumtum’s “Tropic Air” gives us a fresh splash of wobbly tape synth and relaxed lo-fi drums. Of course, the club is not left out and the catalog includes dancefloor ready remixes from friends of the label like Jimpster, DJ Spinna, Jacques Renault, and the red hot up & coming Brooklyn duo musclecars. 

Bastard Jazz started early as so many nascent DJ-oriented imprints come into existence, as founder & president Aaron Schultz just barely out of his teenage years was beginning to find his footing as a DJ in Brooklyn, New York. Culling together a small group of artists early on, the label ran as a side project for many years, releasing a handful of records per year. Following a reorganization & renewed commitment in 2014, the label has experienced exponential growth while moving from a DJ oriented standpoint to an artist focused organization that thrives on signing and nurturing new talent and new sounds, while maintaining a concurrent sonic thread in its music. POC owned with a majority POC artist stable, Bastard Jazz’s story is the slow build of a real indie label with a diverse sound & roster from the ground up, through trial and error, listening, learning, and adapting to the times without becoming jaded or losing its original vision. 20 years on, it’s still here & stronger than ever.

	Back for seconds? We don't blame you. The 1st batch of remixes have started to surface from our earlier releases, and we've boxed them into 'The Remixes: Volume 1'. 8 tracks of re-envisioned club madness, with a familiar taste. 

	Starting it off, Melbourne artist Di Apprentice hop's on Swick and Lewis Cancut's infectiously playful 'Hi Score'  encouraging all de girls a Whine, Whine, Whine. This track screams crossover / radio / dancehall hit, all day. Trouble & Bass's AC Slater shows the greyer side of His Majesty Andre's smash 'Sunshine' with an overcast, garaged influenced mix. All seasons groove, no doubt. Amsterdam's Jeff Doubleu takes Bot's triumphant Barefoot and put some shoes on it. That means you can step the fuck off if you don't like it. Undeniable. The next dish, served by yung Swedish chef Raymond Lam is a unanimous hit at all dinner parties, and discotheques. Hi Score hits the bonus rounds with this remix, already gaining massive support from folks like Clockwork who have pegged it as a peak time set staple. Label man Bot shows another chamber in his ever-expanding arsenal, as he turns Astronomar's rambunctious 'Like This' into a jovial jaunt through warehouse corridors. DC's Nacey remixes one of our most trippy offerings thus far (Will Eastman's 'Caroline'), and spanks it with the funk, harkening memories of a Tennesseean stripper with the sass of Dolly Parton twisted on peach schnapps. That was a good night. No, that was a GREAT night. After that, our Italian cuzzo's 2D Noize spelunk into an ice cave and carve a new version of Astronomar's Pay Attention. Which is amazing, because how do you have time to spelunk when making such sick tracks? And finally, we return to the classics, the first remix we released from Rinse FM's Roska – repacked for your convenience. All 8 tracks are ready for takeout December 10th on Main Course.

Following on from the release of his Beacon of Light EP and then his sublime album Evergreen, which promptly and quite rightfully sold out and is due a re-issue in August, @Crackazat is back with the 'Everybody Talks About It' EP on @freerangerecords. The EP features two tracks from the album, the title track 'Everybody Talks About It' and I'm Easy in both their original forms and as remixed by Cody Currie and Crackazat respectively.

Our premier today is Crackazat's Mana's Dub of I'm Easy which he has turned into a live soul-edged houser, a true timeless classic in every sense of the word with the bass brought to the forefornt, as well as looped up heavy on the echo vocal stabs. Deep pads give it a warm otherworldly feel which pitches the track somewhere between classic Soulfuric dubs and Pepe Bradock's Deep Burnt.

We've had the same core line-ups and even the same chef, Grillson, since the beginning.  But three years ago, the free party in the park got too big and our permit was pulled.  The city of San Francisco could no longer handle the amount of people showing up to the event.  

Ever since then we have been trying to think of way to bring back the vibe of the BBQ park party. This year we finally put together a team that is able to take the BBQ party all across North America and Europe. We will be starting in Miami and ending in San Francisco so make sure to come grill and chill with us sometime this year. This compilation is a celebration of the O.G. dirtybird BBQ vibe.   I hope you enjoy the music.

Jimpster is back with his first full EP since Porchlight And
Rocking Chairs! With only a smattering of remixes for the likes of
Paxton Fettel, Detroit Swindle, Till Von Sein, Cajuu and S-Man and
original track Head Spin for the 200th Freerange double pack it’s
been a fairly quiet time studio-wise the last couple of years. All
that is about to change however with 2015 shaping up to be full of
new music in various shapes and forms and under different guises.
English Rose kicks off the fresh new Jimpster biz in fine style
with the most majestic of tracks, single-handedly announcing that
summer is officially here. A sense of anticipation pervades as the
chunkiest of disco breaks drive the track, hazy vocal pads
occasionally piercing the layers of spinning echoes. We’re thinking
DJ Gregory meets Walter Gibbons in a star-lit clearing of a lush
rainforest on some far-flung tropical island.
Up next we have Solitude, an afro-techno soundclash infused with
that trademark Jimpster sound where the devil is in the detail of
this beautifully subtle and rolling groove. Seven minutes thirty
seconds of complete bliss to get well and truly lost in!
Finally we have Drakkar Noir which once again attempts to hypnotize
you with a relentless old-school house groove and simple, drifting
synths. Distant vocals go in and out of focus as the track ebbs
and flows, finally deciding to call it a day after nearly nine
minutes but still manages to leave you wanting more.
