Few requests for this one off my recent disco funk mix. Love me a bit of Tom Browne, obviously we all know Funkin' For Jamaica so thought I'd have a go at this lesser known funked up classic. 

Few extra drums, tightened up, looped but close to the original as always. Couldn't quite isolate the vocals at the end but it's for mixing innit so all good.

‘Shine (This Is It)’ is the first single from Soul Clap’s self-titled second album that features legendary vocalist Nona Hendryx. After Ray met Charles and Eli when all played at LA party institution A Club Called Rhonda this happened..!

Nona Hendryx is an original member of the trio Labelle who’s smash single “Lady Marmalade” is a timeless classic. Her solo singles “Transformation” and “Do What You Wanna Do” from the 80’s are equally prolific to her work as a back-up vocalist for a laundry list of legendary acts including Parliament-Funkadelic, Talking Heads and Peter Gabriel.

There is magic contained in ‘Shine (This Is It)’ and the strength in Hendryx's vocal empowers our sprits and moves us on the dancefloor. Midnight Magic’s Morgan Wiley delivers an outstanding keyboard solo and fellow bandmate Jason Disu teams up with Kalí Rodríguez and No Regular Play’s Greg Paulus to form the Soul Clap horn section.

Taking the magical vocals, horns and keyboard solo from the original, Ray Mang gives it a latin house twist adding an elevating Rhodes motif, bass and battery. Presented here in three versions on 180gram vinyl.

This was my Spin City Show that aired live on myhouseradio.fm 21/10/2018. This week I had the pleasure of being joined by the legend that is Disco Tech.

To close the show out I am delighted to bring you Niklas Mellilä aka Disco Tech Edits. I've been a huge fan of Niklas for years and have been playing his tracks in my sets since I took up dj'ing again.

Born and raised in a small town in Sweden, Niklas aka Disco Tech moved to Stockholm aged 12 and has been collecting records for nearly two decades since. As a DJ he has been lighting up dance-floors in Scandinavia and beyond all the way back to his days as a Scratch Battle DJ at the 2008 DMC World Championships. His focus has turned to laying down original funk and disco, chopping and editing classic and rare tunes, as well as building his increasingly diverse and wonderful record collection. Patrice Rushen – Never Gonna Give You Up (Joey Negro Re-Grooved Mix)
I procured the multi for this killer dance cut from Patrice’s “Posh” album over 5 years ago and completed the remix a while back but we couldn’t clear it for RWL 2 due to the rights to her music being in limbo while it was sold by Warner Brothers to German indie !K7. This is one of the more radical remixes on the album. In all other cases I base the new version around the original music, sometimes adding extra riffs or replaying bass or guitar. I tried that approach on “Never…” but it just wasn’t happening. I went back to it a few times but I didn’t seem to be able to come up with anything particularly interesting so I decided to go a different direction and attempt to change the music next time I had Kaidi Tatham in the studio playing keys. He did a great job with a groove that is a little like her classic “Number One” and though the chords are different we managed to make most of the original strings and brass work with them.

To commemorate the passing of the great jazz trumpeter Donald Byrd today, I'd like to share my edit, originally released on the Editions Disco label, of one of my favorite songs of his - the jazz-funk and breakbeat classic "Think Twice".  Produced by the incomparable Mizell Brothers, it was sampled (and provided the basis) for three straight-up classic records: A Tribe Called Quest's "Footprints", Main Source's "Looking At The Front Door", and Armand Van Helden's house masterpiece "Flowers".

Byrd's records were a gateway for many of us who got into the nascent jazz-funk, rare groove and breakbeat scenes of the 1990s as DJs and collectors.  But his 1970s albums for Blue Note like Street Lady, Places & Spaces, as well as those of his protégés the Blackbyrds, were not just a rich trove of hip-hop samples for the eager beat-digger - they contained great songs that helped us to appreciate jazz as a popular art-form that was still engaged with contemporary soul, funk and R&B music, and encouraged investigating its infinite musical dimensions further.  He was, and is, tremendously important to my development as a DJ and lover of music.  We've lost a giant today.  RIP.
