All Four Walls (feat. Vaults)

“Slide” details the story of those who just want to enter into a richer person’s life so they can live like they’re more affluent. It arrived on February 24, becoming the first original song released by Scottish DJ/producer Calvin Harris in 2017. It features vocals from Quavo and Offset of the Atlanta trap trio Migos and singer-songwriter Frank Ocean, marking the first collaboration between Harris and either of the two features.

The single was officially announced on February 21 via Calvin’s Twitter after several snippets were teased by Harris on Snapchat.

All of the following instruments are in the song and are performed by Calvin himself: a Yamaha C7 Piano, Sequential Circuits Prophet 5, Fender Rhodes, Gibson SG Custom, Ibanez 1200 Bass, Linn LM-2, Roland TR-808, PPG Wave 2.2, and Roland Jupiter-8.

Calvin Harris first shared a series of clips documenting the process on his Instagram story. He compiled the clips and posted them as a video on his Youtube channel afterwards as well.

There is no doubting at this point that garage is back and well and truly here to stay. There was a slight feeling that the return to popularity of the one of the UK's most important genres both historically and in regards to the dance may have been somewhat of a summer-trend last year, but the sound has survived the winter and is continuing to thrive, despite the tensions and feelings around the world currently representing the polar opposite of what the bubbly textures and uplifting sonics of UKG tend to give us.

We are past the point of leading brands emerging and solidifying their foundation within the sound as we now start to move into the second phase of genre evolution, giving space for a wave of exciting new underground label projects to be birthed into a complex and varied musical landscape. Today we are taking a look at Steppers Club, who following on from a well thought out run of of promotional content have finally launched their label arm with a sizzling new EP project, featuring five extremely exciting garage heads under the charming title of 'First Steps'. 

Having taking a look through the tracklisting, we see can see they have assembled an all star cast considering how new the label is, with the likes of Sensa, Zefer, Y-AY-O, Minista and Sam Deeley all laying down hearty contributions to form a varied yet cohesive track selection, ticking all the boxes so far.

We couldn't resist getting involved with this one however, which is why we are super proud to bring you our official premiere of Oppidan's 'Rewind' contribution. Having given this track it's official world premiere on #BreakfastWithKXVU, I know exactly how much of a punch it packs, swimming in high energy sub-movement and lively drum skips, perfect for injecting a dash of love into any rave scenario.

Oppidan - Rewind [The 3000 Network Premiere]

Downplay is proud to welcome South West production duo Earthnut to the label with their brand new release, ‘Protosynthesis’.

‘Hollow Man’ rolls out on sprightly keys and chopped beats before unfolding into a pitch perfect UKG shuffler that manages to pack oscillating chords, sugar sweet female vocals, punchy bass and a cheeky sample that will raise a wry smile, all into one sublime track.

‘Knucklethump’ provides an even smoother mood to it’s predecessor with a jazzed-out top-line and bumpy percussion that is precision-tooled to get waists winding, before expanding even further in it’s final third with some seriously spicy creative touches to keep the dancefloor jumping.

‘Gunker’ is likely to be the track that really open some ears though, with it’s left-field assimilation of the UKG template into something utterly new but captivating. Reminiscent of the Compost-era broken beat sound, but manipulated into something closer to a subtle dub techno vibe, it defies labeling but is indicative of creative minds reaching their full potential as artists.

Downplay is proud to welcome Australian producer Angus Green to the label with his brand new release, ‘Got To Leave'.

‘Got To Leave’ is the kind of overwhelmingly joyous experience we need right now. It packs a considerable punch upfront with an absolutely huge piano riff that feels like it was lifted straight out of 1992. A bubbling 4x4 groove keeps the action bumping nicely whilst the playful bassline brings plenty of bounce to proceedings. A future classic without a doubt.

‘Wanting’ redirects the energy of the former track into something a little more introspective, but just as powerful. Soulful vocals roll over modulated basslines and intricate percussion for a slice of pure UKG gold.

Scene legends Royal Flush step up for the remix here, taking apart the title track and converting it into a stripped-back 4x4 stomper, complete with jazzy chords and diva vocals to keep the dancefloor jumping.

Angus Green - Got To Leave (DWN032)

Well, when we saw this title land in the store we were as surprised as anyone to see that Four40 Records, one of the most active and exciting UK bass labels across the full breadth of 2020 has just turned 10 years old. This is a pretty outstanding achievement, for a label that is still at the forefront of it's sound to this very day. The compilation of course features some of the biggest releases from across the breadth of Four40's incredible catalogue of content, from the likes of Hybrid Theory, I Killed Kenny, Pavv, Limita and more, condensing ten years of musical progression into one extended tape. We also get to hear a bag of exciting new exclusives from the newer breed of the Four40 roster, including music from The Phat Controlla, Blakk Habit, Lucas Maverick, Gemi, Badger, Patrick Kane, Yozhi, George IV and more. What an incredible way to round off the year!
