Downplay is proud to welcome UKG legend Phonetix to the label with his new release ‘The 2002 EP’. Harking back to time when the UK Garage sound was exploding in different stylistic directions, the EP showcases some of the key sounds that made the genre such a powerful creative force in the early noughties.

‘The Pay-Off’ begins proceedings with a cheeky sample and a dark 2-Step groove reminiscent of Oris Jay and Zed Bias’ early work.

‘Lighting Fires’ takes the tempo up a notch for a thunderous bass-heavy 4x4 roller, designed directly for the dancefloor.

‘Get On Down’ rolls back the years to the Bingo-era of breakstep mayhem, complete with crazy percussion and rapid-fire basslines.

‘Goodbye’ features the vocal talents of Alyssa on a classic UKG joint packed full of soul in the best MJ Cole tradition, that exudes class and style.
