Wickham returns to MINDHELMET for the label’s 19th release - a stacked various artist EP featuring ADMNTi, Finny B, Max Stedeford, James Andrew, Tate, and Wickham himself, who previously graced the imprint with a full solo EP. This time, he signs off the record with “The Docks,” a track that captures everything that makes UK minimal so addictive: groove, melody, and pure dancefloor charm.

Driven by sleek drum programming and a teasing vocal loop whispering “I wanna dance with you,” “The Docks” radiates warmth and human touch. Deep chord sequences ripple through the mix, blending with crisp breaks and basslines that glide rather than stomp - it’s elegant and functional, the kind of track that connects the heads and the dancers in equal measure.

@hokkaido-dance-club: A label not a disco on a north Japanese island, is helmed by Jordan Saxton (aka @Viers & @leekonitz) and Joe Sagar  - two pals from Leeds with a dirty habit of unearthing a gem. HDC have been somewhat quiet of late. Their most recent release being early 2017 from label honcho Viers; a sumptuous offering which left HDC fans all Oliver Twist - begging for more of that tasty metaphorical audio gruel. If you don't have a bowl yet - get one.

When we first heard this - it's safe to say we were a little surprised (pleasantly of course). Part of HDC's legacy has been their contributions towards the dance floor - four/four lead post 12am heaters. Medrea's (https://soundcloud.com/medreadj) 'Untitled' and this features Premiere kicks the record off as it means to go on - maintaining Hokkaido's gritty aesthetic with about as much saturation as the fat content in the porkiest of pies, yet veering (no pun intended) away from the hallmark stonk. Broken beats combining and interacting with etheral strokes and mechanistic hues throughout make for an immersive and entrancing listening experience. In more simple terms - imagine PS1's Duke Nukem gliding his pixely fingers across a Roland D-50 as part of a dystopian future-soul band. Still not with us? Just listen - s'good.

Imagine that part of many house tracks after the climax, with its intensity and purpose. Now imagine taking that part out of the song, re-building it with lots of rough, lo-fi sounds and then stretching it all out for more than six minutes, and you’ve got something like Stratosphere, the first track of E Davd’s upcoming EP on X-Kalay. In direct follow-up to Melburnian Lou Karsh’s Ataraxia, the London-based label is reaching down under again, to Sydney, for a few rhythmic cuts from a man whose tracks we’ve premiered before on Blaq numbers.

Definitely deserving of wider recognition, E Davd was one of the four artists to contribute to X-Kalay’s inaugural Various Artists release for XK010. And now he's come back strong for his first solo record on the label, set for a May 18 release, further bolstering its impressive discography. Bar the intro and a brief interlude around halfway, the A1 (and our premiere) drives forcefully and with real musical clarity. There’s not much ambiguous or particularly complex about it: a crunching open hi-hat, looped acid bassline, three-chord progression and some chopped vocals allow the track to exceed the sum of its parts. As much as we like our premiere, our favourites are on the B-side. Certainly the most adventurous, Zero G (B2) and Heartbeat Hyperdrive (B3) provide some interesting dynamism to this EP with their respective breakbeat and rave nods.

"The EP was inspired by the current seemingly dystopian state of the world. This inspired me to create something that was more experimental and something that had a tough and nostalgic feel to it. The lead track East Georgia St. is warm and nostalgic; heavily inspired by the Downtown East Side of Vancouver. Heavy saturation throughout the track reflects the harsh environment of the area. The second track Malaji is the most dance floor orientated track from the EP and is built around heavy 4/4 elements and a thick rhythmic bassline that revolves around them adding to the groove and movement throughout. Invisible Sunset features a prominent 808 with synths and arps that evolve around it throughout the track. It was made to feel more Utopian than Dystopian and a path towards a brighter future."
