MARK VERNON & Elen Huynh

Naima Karllson treats us to deep searching improvised recordings on 70s organ and vector synth. Originally recorded in Jan 2020 for an installation by Gery Georgieva at Cubitt Artists in London, Naime later reworked the piece, transmuting the material into '[Vital organs] I. In it, slow winding motifs and melodic washes find their feet in a melancholic dirge. Lines of sound open up and unfurl, revealing over time a fragile inner structure. Like the work of her grandparents, Naime's music is rooted in the soil of the earth but gradually lifts itself skywards, finding solace in both the physical and digital world.

The track is accompanied by a video collage by Naime: "The video is a collage of still and moving found images that journey through the organ track on an internal and universal scale. Taking influence from the title, protection and the body are prominent themes. The images search for fluid interconnections between micro and macro bodies in the physical, digital and astral realms such as far-off stars, cell phone devices, Dogon astronomy drawings, bodies of water and our central heart space." - Naime Karlsson

An all new collaborative release by two exciting Belgian artists:

"The first time we collaborated as a duo was for our interpretation of The Sinking of the Titanic by Gavin Bryars at les Ateliers Claus. At that time, there was an audience surrounding us. Now secluded and on our own, we went back to the same venue and locked ourself for 2 days arranging and recording the music Ben Bertrand wrote while he was in confinement.

We designed a dense and mineral triptych. Digging into this music, we experienced the current and pressure of the passing time. At some point we saw light coming in. The transformation has already been done, reversion to fundamentals is now our single option." - Ben Bertrand & Otto Lindholm

Ben Bertrand
Ben Bertrand is a Belgian Bass Clarinetist and composer. With his instrument and countless machines, Ben creates his live with a hypnotic web of sounds. Listening to his music is like sitting at the sea, watching a slow motion of our crazy life sailing by. With his former works (Era/Area, Off-Record 2017 and NGC 1999, les albums Claus 2018), Ben toured in Belgium, France and Netherlands (Meakusma Festival, Ancienne Belgique, Le Lieu Unique, Schiev Festival, Le Guess Who?, World Minimal Music Festival). His last album, Manes, has been released in March 2020 in collaboration with Stroom and les albums claus.

Otto Lindholm
Brussels-based composer evolving in drone music and modern classical, Otto Lindholm employs an array of loop pedals and electronic effects in partnership with his double bass to produce a range of rich and voluptuous tones, emotions, and elongated melodies. He released music on Icarus Records, Gizeh Records, Houndstooth, Blackest Ever Black, Aurora Borealis Recordings, Bedouin Records.

Simon J Karis returns to Nice Music with Piovve, his first release for the label since 2017’s Madrugada. Following from recent releases for Altered States and Vienna Press, Piovve offers up six tracks demonstrating the development and deepening of Karis’ obliquely emotive approach to electronic murk. Floating on clouds of tape hiss in smeared VHS fidelity, Karis explores a range of formal approaches, from the burbling monophonic synth lines and spoken text of opener ‘Infinite July’ to the four-on-the-floor kickdrum and wistful music-box melodies of half-remembered rave closer ‘Shale Pardon’. In between we’re treated to the drumless motorik propulsion of ‘To Think of You’, which calls to mind Moebius and Beerbohm’s Double Cut in its woozy rhythmic insistence before the mood is hijacked by a distorted devotional vocal sample that abruptly reroutes proceedings from the morose to the ecstatic. The opposite path is travelled in ‘On Ardour’ where jittering synth pads toy with euphoria before descending into pensive gloom. Across these six miniatures – each of which concludes with an abrupt cut to silence – Karis mines a vein where sonic experimentation and emotional reflection meet, crafting something uneasy but ultimately celebratory. -Francis Plagne

Simon J Karis 'Infinite July'

'Ray' is Ashley Paul's bright, sensual return to Slip: a lifting, delighting suite of yearning winds, loose beats, and cocooning, humid bass coming together and falling apart as songs. 

The LP airs Paul's new trio, alongside bass clarinettist Yoni Silver and bassist Otto Willberg, who fatten out and shine light on her singularly intimate, multi-instrumental with mystery and grace. 2018's 'Lost In Shadows' wrote into the bewildering ecstasy of recent motherhood with a tingling resolve. On 'Ray' - recorded remotely during lockdown - Paul's deliciously hesitant songcraft is an outpouring and an anchor in freshly tumultuous times. 

Says Ashley:

"Over the past six months I’ve found myself needing music in a new way, a way of coping. I found again albums I had loved in the past, full of melody and humour, to cancel out the barrage of terrible news happening outside. I think this album is a reflection of that need. There is the playfulness of spending my days with our four year old, and the hours spent tending to plants in the garden and examining bugs, and also the pain of missing family and friends. It’s hard for me to fully comprehend the breadth of emotion I've felt recently but maybe this is a small window.
The trio idea had been formulating in my head for months, and then lockdown happened. At first I was very disappointed and thought I'd be waiting forever to finally make it a reality, but time passed. I started working on a new album and could only hear it with these guys. We recorded remotely. I sent material in a variety of ways; written, aurally and verbal ideas/queues, sometimes with just a shell of a track and other times nearly completed. I wanted all our voices to be present, and to allow freedom in the parts for interpretation and improvisation. Maybe because we’ve all worked together in various situations and are friends, I’m not sure, but it came together naturally, magically and quickly."
