Food Music celebrate their 50th release this month by bringing you new remixes of my classic ‘DJs Take Control’ - the 1991 anthem from SL2 .

In addition to a remastered original (exclusively cut to the vinyl release, there are 3 new takes on one of the most infectious breakbeat-rave tracks from 1991.

DJ Boring takes you to another world with his stunning left-of-centre breakbeat excursion while Shadow Child provides a hypnotic-dreamy 4 to the floor workout. Slipmatt & Sooney’s 2018 update pushes all the peak-time house buttons. The digital release also includes ‘Dance’ - a brand new original track from Slipmatt & Sooney.

Where to begin with Slipmatt? A founding father of hardcore and rave in the UK he is arguably one of the most definitive figures in UK dance music having helped soundtrack some of the most iconic raves and parties this country has ever seen.

From Moondance to Fantasia, Helter Skelter to Raindance, Energy to Clockwork Orange.  Slipmatt has played them all and is regarded as a figurehead of rave culture.

Very little which has come since would have happened if it were not for his commitment and boundary breaking approach to dance music in the 90's.

Slipmatt is one of the masterminds behind legendary production outfit SL2 (along with Lime and MC Jay), the visionaries responsible for the chart smashing anthems ‘On A Ragga Tip’ & ‘Way In My Brain’ which helped to define popular rave culture in the UK. This year marks thirty years since the release of 'On A Ragga Tip' - a track which remains as relevant and renowned in the present as it did at its inception.

In the present he continues to DJ and remains as crucial as ever, remodelling his traditional sound within the house music community with his 'Slip’s House' radio show on Centreforce 88.3 DAB digital radio every Wednesday from 8pm.

This mixtape takes us back to the roots of his sound, focussing on the 91-92 era and we are delighted and humbled to be able to welcome him to the series.

My love for Breakbeat started back in the 1980s when I first got hooked on Hip Hop and Electro. By the early 90s I was DJing in the Rave scene, and Breakbeat has been at the core of my sets ever since – from playing UK Garage in the late 90s and early 2000s, to pushing the Rave Breaks sound and exploring various styles of Breakbeat along the way. More than 3 decades on, my passion for Breakbeat is stronger than ever.

In this series I’ll be mixing up brand new 2025 Breaks & Bass with timeless Breakbeat classics and underground gems that connect past and present. Expect rolling basslines, high-energy grooves, and plenty of surprises.

A totally unplanned vinyl only tribute set for the greatest DJ the earth has seen - Tony De Vit.

Tony is the reason why I started DJing and buying vinyl.

After watching Tony move a crowd to new levels at Gatecrasher, my friends & I used to travel regularly to Birmingham to see Tony play at Sundissential, sometimes skiving from school to do so!

I was looking forward to leaving school and experiencing more of Tony’s music but sadly Tony suddenly passed in 1998, twenty-two years ago today. We were devastated to say the least. Tony was at his peak, producing powerful music that still resonates today.

Tony, your sound & energy is needed now more than ever to heal this nation and bring us all together. I hope I can bring that vibe to people in your honour this weekend.

The Essential Mix is a weekly radio show on BBC Radio 1 currently broadcast between 0:00 - 2:00 AM UK time on Saturday morning. Originally broadcast on 30 October 1993, the Essential Mix features contemporary DJs and music producers of electronic dance music. The show has been presented since its inception by Pete Tong and features an uninterrupted two-hour mix from a different artist each week, overlaid with occasional continuity announcements delivered by Tong. With a broadcast run in excess of 25 years, the Essential Mix is one of the longest-running programmes in the current BBC Radio 1 schedule, and is one of very few Radio 1 shows which is not broadcast live.

Having produced a ton of successful singles and compiled a number of hit selling mix albums under his ‘Slipmatt’ alias for some of the World’s most respected record labels including United Dance and Ministry Of Sound, ‘Slipmatt’ is also one of the masterminds behind legendary production outfit SL2 (along with Lime and MC Jay), the visionaries responsible for the chart smashing anthems ‘On A Ragga Tip’ & ‘Way In My Brain’ among many others on the iconic label XL Recordings, home to legendary acts such as ‘The Prodigy’, ‘Basement Jaxx’; and ‘Adele’. 

‘On A Ragga Tip’ is presently enjoying a resurgence of popularity as it goes on the current Virgin Media TV ad as part of their Un-Limiting adverts which includes the new ‘On A Ragga Tip’ Un-Limiting Remix, which has equally proved as popular as ever with dancefloors around the globe and this year alone is scheduled  to collaborate in the studio with Shades Of Rhythm, Andy Galea of Sol Brothers, Alex P, Awesome 3, Alexis Raphael, Sooney and, his good friend DJ Lime with some brand new SL2 releases also in the pipeline.

This wayward don of dance has also played at every major dance event and venue worth knowing about over the years including Energy, Telepathy, Fantazia, Vision, Universe, World Dance, United Dance, Dreamscape, Helter Skelter, Slammin’ Vinyl, Rezurrection, Elevation, Moondance, Raindance, Peace Fest, Clockwork Orange and to top it all off had the great honour of playing directly after his good friends ‘The Prodigy’ to a packed O2 Arena of over 20, 000 people, bringing that particular night to an epic close, and ringing in the year 2014 with a tremendous bang.

‘Slipmatt’ also repeatedly continues to play across the globe in the USA, Asia, Australia, Europe and every corner of his native UK for a string of well recognised and well attended club promotions, festivals and events. He’s no stranger to a Festival or two either playing at leading big top gigs such as Glastonbury, Boomtown and We Are Festival and there has also been and continues to be multiple overseas visits to Ibiza where Slipmatt still to this day enjoys regular return trips to the White Isle’s most infamous hot spots to play such as Eden, Es Paradis and Benimussa Park (The Zoo) 

His media outreach is quite noteworthy also, having started RAW FM, been a resident on Kiss FM, a regular in M8 Magazine and Mixmag, featured in the illustrious DJ Magazine Top 100, he’s been on BBC television a number of times including the famous chart show ‘Top Of The Pops’, runs two of his own popular Radio shows and Podcasts ‘World Of Rave’ and ‘Slip’s House’ and additionally, has won a multitude of awards, including that of ‘Best DJ’ and ‘Best Producer’ awarded by some of the industries most respected bodies such as Kiss FM and EHM.

Not one to ever slow down or fall behind and always keeping himself fresh and relevant, this dancefloor don has been focusing lately on the biggest and best house beats, which has led him to an already extraordinarily busy 2020. Add to that his upcoming book “My Story (and How I Became a World Class DJ)”, which is set to be a smash hit amongst rave fanatics the World over later this year and with over a hundred gigs booked for 2020 already (mid-Feb), there are no signs of this crowd pleasing international artist slowing down any time soon. 

Godfather Of Rave and still keeping it fresh? Definitely.
