OBNOX  - Deep In The Dusk (Redux)

After four full lengths and at least two bucket fulls of singles, Slovenly has finally been graced with a 7” EP from San Francisco’s most petulant purveyors of punk rock, USELESS EATERS. Hand picked by JAY REATARD as the opening band on his last ever tour, Useless Eaters careen back on the scene with “Desperate Living” on the A side. It’s as good a song as band leader Seth Sutton has ever done, and he’s done a ton of them. “Dungeon” and “I Think She Wants To Find Out “ are on the flip and possibly even crazier. Ping-pong stereo KBD / '77 riffs bounce about and have never sounded as now as NOW. These three snotty blasts of weirdo pogo bring the attack with droning Buzzcocks licks and tribal, ritualistic beats. A raging session for their Slovenly debut!

USELESS EATERS - Desperate Living

Just months after releasing their massive "Hospitals" e.p. (702-101), Slovenly Recordings presents the debut full length tidal wave from Greece's Acid Baby Jesus, simply titled, "LP" (702-110). A Mediterranean concoction of two of our favorite "Black" bands (Sabbath/ Lips), ABJ represents the future of heavy psych'n'roll from an isolated, ancient civilization. Combining the ruthless elements of American outlaw roots music and celestial glam rock, like fellow deconstructionists Demon's Claws, "LP" suggests the Rolling Stones at their wearied best, with the electrifying hi-jinks of Brian Eno bulldozing the swagger into the darkest corners of the cosmos. 

Among this album's thirteen original compositions, the deathly dirge "Homo Sapiens" claws forth with a twisted, underlying skronk, ending with the terrifying bacchanalia of a pack of disgruntled flying monkeys. Elsewhere, trance inducing lullabies crescendo into fully erupting cacophonies of feedback and distortion. Girl-group icons The Shangri-Las are channeled in the beaty, dark-pop gallop of "I'm A Baby." "Tooth To Toe," with its exotic, percussive clank and uplifting glitter hook juxtaposes brilliantly with its lyrical ode to post-tour poverty ("I've got to pay the rent, my money's always spent, and I'm deep in shit.") 

Dynamics play equally as heavy a role as their expert songwriting, and a flawless production job by John Vulgaris rounds this album out with a fresh level of psycho-sonic Alex Chilton-esque throb, heavily peppered with lazy Hazelwood-isms. "LP" presents a long, gooey segue from rave-up to release with breathtaking results, like the best love-making of your life.

Deeper and deeper into the sonic soil they burrow, harvesting fresh, organic ingredients for their psychedelic salad… ACID BABY JESUS returns unbruised from a dirty rumor or two of their expiration. Slovenly Recordings has clipped nary a coupon and once again presents a tasty plate of our heaviest lysergic recipe. Drenched in a complex dressing of luxurious Mediterranean flavours, this new “Vegetable” single, released in anticipation of their upcoming second entrée, provides just enough nutrition to keep you satisfied, but never full.

Slovenly Recordings is honored to present a new collection from one of our favorite punk rock stalwarts USELESS EATERS! Seth Sutton is the primary UE punk in question, and “Singles: 2011-2014” compiles the best tracks from their out-of-print singles from cool-assed labels like Goodbye Boozy (Italy), Tic Tac Totally and Nashville’s Dead, to name a few. 

The electrostatic shock of “The Moves” is here, and it sounds like the LSD is just about to take over, only you’ve been chewing on a tab that you never quite wrangled out of its aluminum foil wrapper. Fatter, lo-fi decimating sounds abound with tracks like “Bloody Ripper”, and “I Hate The Kids” (feat. TY SEGALL) makes an appearance here as well. This is a fully realized set that somehow works even better than flipping through your Eaters’ 7” stack which is likely incomplete anyway.

Satisfying a youthful obsession with early KISS and Motley Crüe, then discovering the fortunate truth of The Dictators and Ramones, DIRTY FENCES have finally slammed into the Slovenly path with the “Full Tramp” LP. Brooklyn is the launching pad, and following a previous full length, a few singles and a few transcontinental tours, Dirty Fences got their shit on lockdown. “Full Tramp” has got the biggest balls of them all, and each song is study in what makes a song just right without ever losing sight of what makes an album worth listening to. But when it comes down to it, it’s the really their slime factor that got us on board, and this record is the festering manifestation of your love encrusted bed sheets headed to the wash.

It’s Autumn, 2015 A.D., and in Greece there is insufficient cause for celebration. The country is in economic ruin, and the natives are restless. The Volos tribe known as BAZOOKA is miffed to say the least, yet they say the most. They deliver the verbiage in their mother tongue, poisonous and pissed, for the duration of their scathing second LP “Useless Generation.” These eleven tracks of turbulent, psychedelic punk brilliantly commandeer the unique sense of youthful contempt of what surely must be the current global vortex of corruption and frustration, yet BAZOOKA sallies forth with dutiful abandon. 

The sessions that produced “Useless Generation” (recorded chiefly at studio Fab Liquid in Athens by BAZOOKA co-drummer John Vulgaris) have yielded a sonic result that would humble the mighty Zeus. Unnerving banshee howls drench the soundscape, surreal, and at times, miraculously humorous. Often stiff, militant and urgent, this newest effort makes no qualms with slathering a syrupy dose of synthesizers bending around the crest of the lunar rising, utilizing reverb soaked woodwinds that spiral down from a 5th flight, and employing totemic canter handed down through the millennia while remaining constantly searing. 

BAZOOKA -Useless Generation- - 03 Othoni

It is with great gusto that Slovenly Recordings thrusts the 2nd LP from San Francisco’s SCRAPER squarely into the jaws of the desperate. Produced by Chris Woodhouse (Thee Oh Sees, Ty Segall, Blind Shake) at The Dock in Sacramento, “Misery” is an exercise in simplistic, tightly controlled negativity that crushes the fine line between panic and frenzy into oblivion. A rapid attack of artillery-mimicking snare and bass heavy hunch is the canon, wrought in a Bay Area sewer and reveling in a verminous infestation of post-punk pulse: think WIRE versus THE SPITS in a Shaolin death trap. Necessary indictments of dot-com Silicon scum manifest in “Rodent” while “Clones” and “Reaction” drive the point with unparalleled frustration and an uncanny ability to deliver remarkable rock’n’rattle. SCRAPER administers a deliberate slug to the gut, never fucking around with pretty boy gimmicks and pretense, and “Misery” is the rabid battle cry.

Welcome to the latest USELESS EATERS installment in the Slovenly Recordings repertoire. Following the unrestrained pummel of 2014’s “Desperate Living” 7inch, and the strange cohesiveness of their “Singles: 2011-2014” collection, we present you with this stark and weird new “Temporary Mutilation” five track 10inch EP. Featuring the instrumental prowess of drummer Miles Luttrell from future Slovenly legends SCRAPER, Brendan Hagarty on bass, and recorded by Kelley Stoltz (Third Man Records fame) and mastered by Mikey Young of Australia’s TOTAL CONTROL, this release especially exemplifies singer / guitarist / leader Seth Sutton’s growth as a sonic craftsman - less concerned with “punk” as a sound while inevitably remaining PUNK, devoting himself to the development of unique noise. The title track’s skeletal arrangement and oddball meter has been embellished with haunting vibrations via phones of the saxo & xylo variety, electronic rhythmic units have been employed in “Poison Dart”, and the entirety of the EP bleeds with Sutton’s trademark horrific sci-fi imagery and aggressive riffs and delivery.

It is with surefire thrill that we welcome the most esteemed Shannon Shaw (she of the sensational Clams) to the Slovenly Recordings roster, partaking in a new collaboration with with label veteran / rockabilly wildman Bloodshot Bill (he of Hellshovel, The Ding Dongs & The Tandoori Knights), together at last with the “Honey Time” b/w “True” single. On this sureshot 7” the duo couples vocal duties with a raving blaster for the A-side, and flip-flop the mood with a sultry kissing-floor crooner on the lower deck. Absolute perfection from two of the world’s most beloved rock’n’rollers, and printed in a gold foil slathered sleeve for even more shebang for your buck.

You’d figure that with the recent release of two new volumes of Crypt Records’ Back From The Grave series, and a vast stack of Last of the Garage Punk Unknowns comps finally getting their due, that the well of unheard '60s garage band recordings finally got sucked clean dry. Enter Tom Shannon of the mighty CHEATER SLICKS who dialed us up last year with a story of a customer he met while on the clock at Columbus, Ohio’s famed Used Kids Records, where he holds down hours and takes all the good stuff. Said customer delivered a perfectly preserved time capsule 7” acetate from his Cleveland juvenile delinquent combo THE WEAD: drummer Mike O’Callaghan allowed Mr. Shannon home recording privileges on proper gear where the resulting files were handed over to Black Gladiator / Slovenly Recordings for release. Much to garage kingpin Tim Warren’s chagrin, we sent him the tracks to apply his Crypt-style audio tweaking and manhandling, and we now present the first ever issue of this lost 1966 teenpunk masterpiece. “By The Whey” is a rabid punker wrought with menacing mod riffage, a twisted break and lead vox that shows the singer sounding like puberty was still miles away. The flip “And I And She” is of equal unhinged quality - a storming raver that would have easily fit on the “Teen Jangler Blowout!” volume of Teenage Shutdown, and it's as unique as we’ve ever heard. We’re honored and proud as hell to offer this truly unknown two-sider to the world for the first time.

One of Spain's greatest rock and roll bands, Ilegales, once said, “We are everything you say we are, and even worse.” BIZNAGA might share this motto if it weren’t for the fact that they don’t give a shit about rock and roll. They wanted me to dedicate few words to their “Sense of Spectacle,” so maybe you’re expecting to read a long list of over-the-top metaphors and grandiose yet undeserved adjectives to describe their songs. That’s not gonna happen. I’m not going to do anything even remotely similar - they wouldn’t want that. I’m not going to say that this is an album created through balls and ingenuity, an arrogant and tender artifact, full of urgent melodies, hymns about daily struggles and the same nervous verbosity as many UK-based bands from past decades (The Clash, Buzzcocks, Mekons, Zounds, Stiff Little Fingers, Television Personalities), or that they know how to squander with taste and impertinence the inheritance of some local heroes (Parálisis Permanente, Eskorbuto, Ilegales) or that even when they succumb to that fabled fatigue and their flamenco style comes out, they make it work. I won’t say that you should pay attention to the lyrics of these songs that are full of streets and nights, because, as in all the songs they’ve written up to this point, they sing about the classic problem of fear, disgust, boredom, and the lack of communication in current times, and they talk about these issues in a way nobody else is doing. I won’t say any of that, of course not, because they would never want that, but above all, because whatever you say they are, they are, and even worse.

No diré que es un disco hecho a base de cojones e ingenio, un artefacto arrogante y tierno, repleto de melodías urgentes, himnos de pelea cotidiana y la misma verborrea nerviosa de algunas bandas británicas o irlandesas de los últimos 70 (The Clash, Buzzcocks, Mekons, Zounds, Stiff Little Fingers, Tv Personalities...) o que saben dilapidar con gusto y descaro la herencia de algunos héroes locales (Parálisis Permanente, Eskorbuto, Ilegales...) o que incluso, cuando les entra la fatiga folclórica y se ponen flamencos, son capaces de salir airosos. No diré que deberías prestar atención a los textos de estas canciones llenas de calles y noches porque, como en todas las que han escrito hasta la fecha, le cantan a la clásica problemática del miedo, el asco, el aburrimiento y la incomunicación contemporánea como nadie lo está haciendo ahora mismo. No diré nada de eso, claro que no, porque ellos nunca lo querrían, pero sobre todo, porque todo lo que diga que son, lo son y aún peor.

Track 02 from the upcoming self-titled LP!Slovenly Recordings proudly presents the debut vinyl offering from Greek punk prankster George Fotopoulos, doing business as electro-punk outfit NOMOS 751. This self-titled LP houses more music than should be legally permissible on a single album, with 17 tracks of tricky compositions propelled by rinky-dink synth and programmed percussion ranking at zero acidity on the PH scale for Phat Beats. Having previously rotted our minds in the mid-aughts with his Thessaloniki budget rocker crew KOMODINA 3, Mr. Fotopoulos has developed and perfected a seizure inducing sonic smorgasbord of complicated and hilarious racket and punk rock polyrhythms that sounds like your favorite Stranglers LP played at 45rpm, or perhaps backwards, or at least in Greek. In fact, the tongue is so twisted that it’s barely recognizable as humanoid, and we therefore spaced adding the Mondo Mongo imprint to the jacket. Enjoy the gibberish whatever you’re capable of computing: there’s a giant, full color newsprint poster housed in the jacket with lyrics printed in both Greek and English, for the curious and / or literate.

Slovenly Recordings welcomes Poland’s prime purveyors of pierogi punk MORON’S MORONS to our putrid populace. This is their first release after 2017’s self-titled debut on the UK’s No Front Teeth Records. It’s called “Indecent Exposure” (no song title to match?), and it’s just the kind of hot mess we cream over: sloppy, unpolished shit rock, distorted to the max, and faster than lubed moose manure with barely intelligible vocals that we’re keen to judge based on song titles like “Vibrator Violator,” and the obvious FM radio smash hit of the bunch, “Devil Sucks My Cock and Swallows.” An artistic triumph in every sense that we aren’t likely to witness again, or at least until the release of the upcoming 7” by Puppy and the Hand Jobs!

From swingin’ Sudbury, Ontario, CA (nada), here come TOMMY and the COMMIES with their debut recordings for Slovenly Recordings, "Here come Tommy and the Commies!" “Here Come…” is 16 blistering minutes of hooliganistic mod-punk madness featuring Jeff Houle, also known as the sole brain behind budget rock cult faves STRANGE ATTRACTOR, and his brother Mitch, known ⅔ collectively as the power-pop force STATUES of P. Trash Records fame. 

Swagger drenched youngster frontman Tommy Commy recruited Strange Jeff by dragging him into a bathroom stall during a punk show, playing him an inaudible demo on a phone. The Houle Two agreed to join forces for Tommy’s first foray into the world of record making on the strength of giving “Spiral Scratch” era Howard Devoto a run for his dosh on the vox on any given holiday. This kid has GOT IT, BABY! 

In a perfect modern world, songs like “Devices,” and “Suckin’ In Your 20’s” would be massive chart smashes on the level of “Teenage Kicks.” Those days are long gone, but here we are in 2018, giving YOU what you need, and what THEY don’t deserve.

Slovenly is extra pumped to present this platter from Tuscan punk rock paesanos the DIRTIEST. Label founder Peter Menchetti is Italian (from New York, which has so much Italian blood it may as well be the 21st region of Italy!) and while it's not the first album we release from the old country, the DIRTIEST are the first to do it in Italiano, and you know the saying -- they do it better.

Lyrically, the DIRTIEST bounce from brilliance to bonehead and then back, showing deep disgust for the status quo in Italy, and deep love for punk rock & all their pals in the scene. Musically, they are clearly picking up where the RAMONES left the SPITS & the PIZZAS off, but not without adding some strong Italian flavor. After hearing this for the first time, PERSONAL was torn between heading for Italy with his baseball bat, and sending the band a cease & desist -- but then we reminded him that Iggy & Joey never busted any PIZZAS balls...

If you've ever wondered what makes Italian punk rock different from punk rock from Italy, this LP will show you -- side A is all in Italian, and side B is all in English. The B-side tracks are only being released on the backside of this platter, so statte zitt' e mangia! -- while it's hot.

Starting with a very fine full length release by the Netherlands' swampiest caveman blues duo Lo-Lite, Slovenly has grown to be one of the most respected labels world wide for ripping and REAL rock'n'roll!

All of our releases are available on VINYL, with many of the LPs also having a CD edition.

Slovenly imprint BLACK GLADIATOR is run by Bazooka Joe of The Thing With Two Heads DJ duo.
