MIXTAPE & DJ SET

Cognitiva and ANMA Records present ‘Outlines’, a snapshot of a new generation of exciting producers from across Europe, collaborating and mixing jazz, broken beat & house in exciting new ways. 10 tracks split into two parts on vinyl, featuring ones-to-watch Contours, Werkha, Footshooter, Allysha Joy, Karmasound and Domenico Sanna. ANMA and Cognitiva have not only curated the featured artists but have also instigated many of the collaborations featured.
Part 1 is the more jazz orientated of the two halves, opening with the broken jazz funk and juno basslines of “Astral Sorcery” by Future Jazz Ensemble (Sähkö Recordings) and XL Regular.
Quiroga and Milanese jazz funkers 291out follow with some mutant funk and Head Hunters grease on “Fantasia Mélange”. Tuscany’s Slowaxx masters the mid-tempo groove on “Le Tapis Bleu”, crying for a dance floor to gently warm.
On the flip, Cognitiva boss SofaTalk (Piero Paolinelli), reworks “Evidente” by acclaimed pianist Domenico Sanna. Collaborator Shalka Mani draws you in with her poetry over piano licks and scattered snares. We’re not even on the dancefloor disc and we have a broken beat monster closing the EP, on “Anthropocene” by Veezo & F2F Project. Recalling vintage Goya, the heavy Afro Caribbean percussion chops in time with the irresistible electro funk synths.
Part 2 opens up with Aura Safari’s “Velvet Horizon”. Jazz funk synths riffs, a heavy break, bumping kick. A fine example of why Aura Safari’s tunes have been chased by some of the hottest labels and DJs. Karmasound and FootNote, a new project from ANMA boss Angelo Mazzone, pick up the baton with aplomb, slowing the tempo down enough for Mabreezee’s smooth vocals to cast a spell with “Peace Of Mind”. A summer-ready jam, no doubt.
Next gen bruk soldier and Dance Regular affiliate, Footshooter delivers a killer jam, full of subtleties on “Hibiscus”. Skipping two-step beat, propulsive bassline, and the unmistakable vocals of Allysha Joy, breakout star of the 30/70 Collective and wider Melbourne scene. On the penultimate number, Contours, following two acclaimed & sold out releases on ANMA, trades beats and synths with the incredibly talented Werkha, a producer who manages to turn all styles to his will, from broken beat to jazz and soul. Roy Vision closes the set with “4411”. House, broken beat, classic Detroit techno, jazz and UK garage all seem to have a part to play, but the tune stands as a potential dancefloor killer, replete with a spellbinding trumpet & keys breakdown in the middle.
Label bosses Angelo and Piero see ‘Outlines’ as “an open book, a narrative that looks to not only the future, but also considers the past. Sounds, cultures and colours come together on a mutual path”. An exciting collection of first dates, first collaborations that have yielded exciting mutant strains of jazz, funk, broken beat and house music.

Italian artist Slowaxx @slowaxx makes his first appearance on Broken District. 

With “Linn Orchestra”, this Tuscan-based producer takes us on a jazzy, acid, broken beat trip. The track is led by atmospheric pads creating an almost dramatic setting… but they are overlapped with a colourful bass sequence, acid synths and a powerful rhythm (based on the LinnDrum drum machine – hence the title) that brings a peculiar flavour to this odd piece of music. The kind of production that really stick to the Broken District aesthetic.

Following releases from Italian mastermind Sofatalk, Australian jazz electronica sensation Horatio Luna and Sam Irl among others, the Bordeaux-based broken beat specialist @brokendistrict prepare to release 'Shapes Interfusion' LP - courtesy of Tuscan multi-instrumentalist Riccardo Chiarucci, better known as @slowaxx.

Broken District is the label launched by the creative minds of Jus Jam, Momla & Antwan. Starting up in 2018, the roster has included acts like SofaTalk, Real, J., Sam Irl, Turbojazz, Marian Tone, System Olympia, Junktion, Leon Revol, Setwun, Duktus, Jeppe Wolmer, Interface Palm, Jus Jam & Momla themselves. Here Broken District present their next collaboration with Slowaxx, the solo project and live band created by Riccardo Chiarucci, producer, arranger, and composer from Tuscany. His debut long player ‘Shapes Interfusion’ is a blend of home studio production and live recorded sessions that incorporate lo-fi, hazy jazz, mind-warping electronica, with lashings of hip-hop swagger. It was recorded with a host of dedicated session musicians, and rapper Young A.M.A. 
Opener ‘Emoyeni’ - Zulu for wind, soul, and spirit - is a handful of thoughts fluttering about in the air, expressed via a Rhodes jam played by Luca Sguera, conversing with sharp electronic drums. ‘Y.B.A’ is an electronic jazz session featuring Young A.M.A, his provocative and ego-driven lyrics adding a complexity to the already atmospheric production. ‘Femmes’ is a tribute to women and a timely appeal against gender inequality. Featuring words from Emma Watson, against a backdrop of soulful rhythms & beats, and 90s sampled drums.
‘Pantere Rosee’ and ‘Stazione Funk’ complete both sides with their own unique aesthetic. The first offers up a pure Rhodes, bass & synth jam that is built on a foundation of some wildly acoustic drums. The latter moving in the opposite direction with deconstructed samples of more 90s drums pattens, acid lines and grooves. Closing out, Young A.M.A. returns on ‘No Secret, his easy flow openly expressing views on hip-hop, while the instrumental travels high up into a star filled galaxy with its multi layered keys floating above the incredibly heavy bassline played by Jury Maccianti.

In the wake of Slowaxx's debut album released in February, Bordeaux-based record label Broken District unveil a compelling collection of live renditions that underscore the dynamic soundscapes crafted by his talented ensemble, which includes six adept musicians alongside rapper Young A.M.A...Our pick from the album is opening track ‘Shapes Interfusion (Intro) ‘. In just less than two minutes, the track unfolds a mesmerising tapestry of serene saxophone soundscapes, artfully interlaced with ethereal keys and subtle, FX-laden guitar touches. The slumbering bass lines pulse beneath it all, crafting an exhilarating ascent into a multifaceted meditative experience resonating within the depths of the Mediterranean sea.

Bosconi Home Cooked Beats brings together unreleased tracks from producers from Italy and elsewhere to raise money for the Banco Alimentare Onlus Foundation. This initiative tackles food waste and redistributes food surplus to charities helping provide meals to those in need in Italy, which are relied upon more than ever in response to this unprecedented moment of crisis. At the heart of the compilation and the artists who have contributed is a double mission: to support those who in this moment of need still have an essential right to food, and also for these artists to be recognised by Italian social and cultural institutions, which for the most part still do not see us as entirely ‘professional' figures. All proceeds from sales of the compilation and individual tracks up to 31 August 2020 will be donated to the charity.
