The story behind Benjamin Schoos’ sumptuous new single, ‘All Night Every Night’, is a very modern tale of connectivity. It’s a meeting of musical minds five-and-a-half thousand miles apart and separated by the Atlantic Ocean. It’s a bromance where the protagonists have never met outside of an email thread (they will hook up for the first time for promotional purposes in 2018). 

The Belgian crooner was listening to streaming services one day at home in Liege when the provider threw up Dent May’s sweet psychedelic soul music. The mathematical data packets selected a song of May’s and Schoos was instantly hooked. The algorithms were on fire that day, because the more he listened, the more he liked, and having secured the services of Laetitia Sadier (ex of Stereolab), Mark Gardiner from Ride and Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders as guest vocalists on his international debut China Man vs Chinagirl, he made a note to contact this kindred musical spirit - wherever in the world he might be - with the suggestion of a collaboration. 

“The first time I heard Dent’s music was in 2013,” he says. “It was Do Things, which is a great pop album. I really fell in love with his music! Great songs, great vocals and melodies with a sixties flavour, but with very modern production.” The pair have much in common: Schoos produces lush, string-laden, melancholic French pop at his Freaksville studios; May has “a voice like Brian Wilson,” according to Pitchfork, “a winsome persona - intergalactic lounge singer, spaceship yacht-rock star”. Releasing music on Animal Collective's Paw Tracks label, the L.A. based musician (having relocated from Oxford, Mississippi) counts iconoclastic chansioner Serge Gainsbourg as a major influence, as well as sardonic country pop legend Lee Hazlewood. Benjamin’s and Dent’s collaboration would prove to be a match made in heaven, or cyberspace to be more precise.

“I wrote and produced the music, played all the instruments and provided a few backing vocals at the Eastview studio in Liege,” says Schoos. “Dent wrote the lines and the vocal melody in L.A.” Gilles Martin, who was an engineer at the legendary Factory label alongside Martin Hannett, and has since overseen work by the likes of Hector Zazou and Bony Bikaye, provides the mix. 

Benjamin Schoos’ 2014 album Beau Futur was a 6Music album of the day, while ‘Je ne vous que vous’ with Laetitia Sadier was playlisted on the same station and received airplay all over the world, including on the influential KCRW radio station in the States. ‘All Night Every Night’ is his first single written entirely in English, and it promises to reach yet further afield with its sultry sonics and titular tenacity. At just under four minutes, it’s a sublime slab of sunshine pop that will appear in the middle of winter and should hopefully help dispel the winter blues. “Great pop music is powerful,” Schoos testifies. “It brings serotonin to our brains and love to our hearts.”

Violens' forthcoming album, "True," finds the Brooklyn three-piece further amplifying their innovative songwriting with a palette of exquisitely crafted sound. The band's music eludes classification, expertly blending percussive guitar work and silky harmonies, seeking the silver lining yet to be discovered between the sounds we know and love. With a wash of 90s sonic pop drawn from artists like Pale Saints, Cocteau Twins and McCarthy, Violens paint soft watercolor notes across their compositions, adding crucial emotional depth via layered vocal harmonies.

The album's first single, "Totally True," demonstrates this with its stone-washed, semi-improvised feel, celebrating bands like The Chameleons and Martin Newell's Cleaners From Venus. The guitars are clean and jangling, meshing perfectly with the driving bassline. The lovely vocals have an almost 60s feel; their debt to such soft-rock touchstones as The Association and Sagittarius is one of the unique elements of Violens' sound that sets them well-apart from many of their contemporaries. The b-side "Something Falling" is a dreamy ballad marked by an effectively spare production, sweeping synths and the band's trademark harmonies. Simply gorgeous.

Les Big Byrd - "Snö-Golem"

Slumberland began operations in 1989 as a collective effort consisting of members of DC area bands Velocity Girl, Big Jesus Trash Can/Whorl, Black Tambourine and Powderburns. We were inspired by such musical happenings as C86, early Creation, Postcard, K, Bus Stop, lower East Side noise, and also the renegade art aesthetics & methods of people like Cage, Burroughs and Duchamp. The explosion of punk had left behind a thriving network of 'zines, labels and distributors and we felt that there was room for our noise-loving, pop-obsessed aesthetic. While there were loads of US indie labels releasing a steady stream of 7"s, there wasn't much pop going on. Notable exceptions included Bus Stop, K and Picture Book, and we hoped to join that group and help chisel out some space for melodies amongst the noise.

Early releases from Velocity Girl, Whorl and Black Tambourine struck a note, and we found like-minded popsters getting in touch from all over the world. As we expanded the label roster and our own horizons, the goal was always to share great songs and interesting sounds from a range of styles. Our first burst of activity through the 1990s and early 2000s brought seminal records by legendary bands like Stereolab, Rocketship, The Ropers, Lorelei, The Aislers Set, Hood and Boyracer.

By the mid 2000s we were seeing a resurgence of interest in guitar pop and the start of the ongoing vinyl revival: the perfect environment for Slumberland! We launched into our latest phase of activity with as string of classic releases from The Pains of Being Pure At Heart, Crystal Stilts, Frankie Rose, Veronica Falls, Allo Darlin', Joanna Gruesome and so many more.

2025 is our thirty-sixth (!) year we are still at it, ploughing our own furrow and bringing you unique, genre-defining (and genre-defying!) releases from bands like The Laughing Chimes, Humdrum, The Cords, Autocamper, Jeanines, The Umbrellas, Neutrals, Artsick, Kids On A Crime Spree, Papercuts, Lightheaded, Tony Jay, Chime School, Lunchbox and many, many more. Indie fashions come and go but we're still thrilled by great songs and the new ways that pop can be rejuvenated to fit the times.
