The story of Salty Miller and his ‘Album #1’ must begin with the foundations of the sound. ‘Beach Music’ washed onto the shores of the American South in waves, reflecting the region’s changing culture and times. Its roots stem from the doo-wop, soul, and rhythm and blues of the 50s and 60s, with R&B acts like The Dominoes, The Drifters, The Temptations, The Four Tops, The Tams, and Chairmen of the Board all producing beach records. Even pop songs like ‘Build Me Up, Buttercup’ by The Foundations were classified as Beach Music due to its tempo and feel.
Nelson "Salty" Miller was a castaway of the Carolina Beach Music scene. He made waves in the 60s with Hey! I Know You, recorded by his University of North Carolina group, The Monzas in ‘64. The band originally formed in ‘61 with members Ward May, Skip Henshaw, Nelson Miller, Roger Mercer, Sharon Copeland, Linda Quinlan, and Bing Greeson. They began by performing at high school dances, a humble beginning to an extraordinary era. Over the decade, they released a handful of 45s, including Where Is Love and Ain’t It The Truth on their own Pacific Records label before dissolving at the end of the decade.
By the late ‘70s, removed from the music industry for over a decade,  Salty Miller was determined to record new music and assembled a cast of renowned musicians. By 1980, Miller had completed his recordings and submitted his masters to Century Custom, a manufacturer specializing in limited pressings for independents—perhaps explaining why this album is so hard to come by. Choosing one of the company’s stock beach-themed covers, he applied a simple font and titled the record ‘Album #1’. Released on Beach Music Records of the Carolinas, the album was a mix of disco, novelty tracks, and mid-tempo steppers—all well-suited for Beach Music’s signature dance, the Shag. The record contained local influences, oceanic soundscapes, and emotive string arrangements.
