Seeds and Stems

This song is the culmination of equal parts reflection, ambition, and learning. I'm still working on figuring things out in all facets of art and life, and this initial work is founded in raw emotion. It features straight ahead instrumentation as to not detract from the message, but illuminate it as a concept by which to adhere. Bits of homage are sprinkled throughout the track to further develop the narrative, as well as pay tribute to the music which has inspired my own life. I'm quite certain that the tubes in my amp were dying whilst recording, as the next time I went to use the amp it blew the main fuse, thusly causing me to take it to my local shop for repair, so yeah, the slide tone is a bit dark. Still learning how to properly record and mix audio, so it can only get better from here, right?

The drum tracks were produced in EZDrummer, but other than that, it's just me on Bass, Guitar, Slide, and Vocals. To better achieve the sound I had in my head, light distortion was added to the vocal track, and all other recording was lightly EQ'd and compressed. Thank you for listening.

I've had some version of this chord progression floating around for many years, but never had the proper words to serve it adequately. I wanted the lead guitar tone to have a "pleading" sort of quality, and then I sang with a lot of air to fit the atmosphere of the tune. The synth pads underneath help add to the big washy sound, and add a lot of stereo depth to listen for. I've been enjoying my current approach to song-writing, whereas I leave ample space for the parts to bloom A lot of the instrumentation is an audible bibliography of my influences. For instance, as I was figuring out the bass line, I played an octave pattern and it immediately triggered in my head that it was the main riff of "Bulls On Parade" by Rage Against the Machine, although I'm sure you would agree this song is not even on the same planet as Rage. Conversely, the final chorus and outro (roughly the last 2 minutes) on the bass and lead guitar stuff was all improvised to pay some homage to The Grateful Dead, Allman Brothers, and all of the other jam bands I dig. Just a simple two chord vamp, but it was fun to make it all fit contextually. After the bridge, I thought it would be fun to play along with the previous lyrics "flippantly in skew," and to do do that very thing to the sound and ramp up the tempo a bit with a 6/8 swing feel. I realized that I was crazy for wanting to do this, and in turn inspired me to play a bas line that sounds much like the melody line of "Fly Me to the Moon" by Sinatra. It had been a while since I attempted to "play" piano, so my hand work is a bit sloppy, so I doubled the track and drowned it in a big washy reverb lol. 

   For you guitar nerds, the lead sound was all in the neck position of my MIM Hendrix Strat. From there we ran into my pedal board, where I used the Vertex Effects "Steel String Supreme" (just the EQ side) for some Dumble flavor, then into an EHX Soul Food, then into the Fat Channel of a Fender Supersonic 22. In the effects loop of the SS22, I ran into the Boss MD-500 with the classic (uni) vibe setting on, then dripped it into some analog delay from the Fender Reflecting Pool. The verse tone was still into the fat channel of the amp, but only running the Soul Food and the Afterneath by Earthquaker Devices. I think the first verse I was on neck/middle, 2nd verse was middle, and the bridge was middle/bridge. I'm still trying to figure out how to get a good slide tone. I've used my old Ibanez Artcore semi-hollow(the first guitar I ever bought with my own monies, back in like 2008) for these first two tracks, but I've got some ideas for next time.
