Where to start . . . ?! This second Burning Man experience was indescribable. 
Filled with serendipitous moments, my week was as magical as it could have been.

Robot Heart was the last of the seven shows I played and certainly one I was looking forward to the most. Why? Because I was given the opportunity to play an extended set. Pretty damn special isn't it?!

It's 7.30AM, Saturday after man burn, I wake up all dusty in my yurt after playing through a mad storm at White Ocean from 3 to 5AM hoping for the weather to have settled a little. I walk outside and guess what . . . 
it is a complete white out!!! 

Putting all the good will I have out there, I decide to jump on my bicycle and ride out to the deep playa to find the bus. The wind is very strong and the visibility so low that I literally get thrown off it. I desperately start walking, like a blind man, following whatever sound I can hear. Slowly losing hope, I eventually run into a bunch of white walkers on the same mission. I realise time is running low as I have lost all sense of direction. My skepticism increases, yet my ears magically take me to the Heart just before the start of my agreed set time - 8.30AM. Monolink is performing live in front of a bunch of troopers. I get informed that performances have slightly been delayed due to weather conditions. The sky gets darker by the minute. The crew warns me that rain had been forecasted and that music would have to be turned off for safety reasons in case of another storm. I then realise that my set could just get canceled. Sad face. I pray the weather gods for mercy.
As I get on, the sky magically clears. No more wind, barely any clouds, no more dust. My nightmare turns into a dream and my journey on the decks begins.

I hope you’ll appreciate and enjoy the spontaneity of this set.

Ursa Major
Reaching to grab what is within her grasp is Ursa Major, a 14 foot tall, grizzly bear sow. She may simply be reaching for berries but perceivably she is reaching higher: to the northern sky and the constellation that is her name, Ursa Major. In navigation, the constellation is useful in pointing the way to the North Star.  Ursa Major’s pose is inspiring, she brings the gaze and hopes of the participant skyward. She also demonstrates respect for the bears and nature, her pose is not like a taxidermy bear. She is in her natural state and unthreatening.  With a durable, unique material that was used on their previous Burning Man project (Penny the Goose), Ursa Major’s fur will be made of US and Canadian pennies. The pattern and feel will be like fur.

Callback Funk - FNF 2018 Submission

One fine day in the middle of May, MTG Primate Crooked Sounds was chilling with a banana, listening to the sounds of the Jungle when the idea hit him! The MTG needs to branch out into some Drum n Bass!! He gobbled the rest of his 'naana, busted out some kick ass dnb, threw it at Bulla's feet and said, "have a go at this!!" Bulla took up the challenge and brought some dirty, low slung vibes to the mix then threw it over to Linda B who chucked in some cheeky dirty sounds. Professor Prim8 heard the call and finished it off with some typical nastiness and thus the mix was born. MTGnB are proud to present our first DnB mix, Drum 'N' Apes! Enjoy!

On this weeks episode of the RIPEcast we are bringing you house music legend @DJ-Mes with his recent live set from Nimby Oakland.  We are are honored to have an icon of the house music community featured on this podcast.  Here is a bit more about @DJ-Mes:

DJ Mes ' Guesthouse Music ' Oakland, CA Bay-Area bred DJ Mes (Jason Sutton) rarely slows his groove. Since the 2004 inception of his Oakland-based label, Guesthouse Music, Mes has produced a prolific catalog of bass-heavy tracks that have scorched dance floors amid the ebb and flow of electronic music. As a DJ, his sets have inspired; as a producer, his montage of disco-dredged beats meld bump with rhythm and bass to create hot buzz in front of and beyond the speakers. In 2011, Traxsource honored Mes with the top spot on a list of 100 best house tracks of 2011 following the release of the bumpy Chicago-sound behind "Fools Gold" (Cajual Recordings). Mes' career dates back to the mid-1990s, when the future producer took early influence from the likes of DJ Dan (Funky Techno Tribe) and Tony Hewitt (Tango Recordings). Some two decades later, it would be DJ Dan who would join the talent ranks of Guesthouse Music, Mes' genre-defying imprint that earned him notoriety beyond numerous festival appearances, club residencies, and as co-founder of Daddy's Records (1996). Unlike previous endeavors, Guesthouse bloomed as a personal and creative project inspired by the underground house community that embraced the sound in the U.S. and overseas. While Mes continued releasing tracks on acclaimed labels such as Black Cherry, Magnetic, and Flapjack, it was his own Guesthouse Music that set the pace, releasing 150 EPs-including 40 vinyl releases-since its inception. Mes' ear for talent led to the unveiling of some of the most successful names in underground house, including breakout artists of 2011, J Paul Getto, who scaled the charts of Traxsource with "Need More Music" and "Paris Fried Chicken" Boundary-bending producers, such as Gramphonedzie, and classic acts, such as Cosy Creatures and The Sound Republic, exploded onto the scene under Mes' own A&R moxie. Even while he introduced new DJs and producers to audiences, he continued creating his own body of boompty sounds. While Mes looks ahead for talent, he creatively nods to sounds that inspired him to slide behind the decks more than 16 years ago. In 2011, Mes followed up his seminal "Fools Gold" release (Cajual Recordings) with a second EP, "Town Business." "Love Affair," a rework of First Choice's classic "Love Thang," climbed the underground charts alongside a remix of Two Ton's Of Fun classic, "I Got the Feeling." Even while maintaining a regular touring schedule throughout the U.S. and Europe, Mes continues partnering with the some of the scene's most lauded producers, such as DJ Sneak and his own greatest influence, DJ Dan. In December 2011, Mes and Guesthouse created another piece of house music history by releasing their 100th track, "3000" (J Paul Getto). For Mes, it marks the beginning of another phase of underground house evolution. Adds Mes: "I'm always working to sign new or undiscovered music and talent to the label, and maybe even throw a curve ball to startle people with a new, unexpected style or sound. It's what it's all about."

It was Sunday opening night on the Playa, excitement was in the air as new burn was upon us, some had just arrived some had been setting up for weeks, once that heart lit up we all knew where to go.   Robot Heart has been a source of inspiration for me, in fact the track I opened with “Unity” was inspired by my experience at Robot Heat way back in 2012, my first burn.  The other unusual sounds you are hearing are recordings from the rainforest of Indonesia and Gamelan rhythms from Bali island where I spend much time.  The Rainforest’s of Indonesia are very close to my heart and we do a lot with our Rainforest Pavilion initiative to protect these wonders.   To be included into the Robot Heart family and invited to play is a great honor, the experience lived up to everything I could have hoped for.  Magic is the only word I can use to describe playing and swaying back and forth on that giant illuminated beautiful creation known as the Robot Heart Bus.  1000 thank you’s to Robot Heart for bringing something amazing to the Playa and stepping it up every year for 10 years.  Can’t wait to see you all again.
