"Basilar felt like being inside an enchanted forest, that has seen things and remembers them. Playing to an open-minded crowd, with a crew that knows its music and history, made a big difference too. As always, I tried to take the set in different directions, mindful of the fact that we were going to move from pitch darkness into early morning brightness. These twilight periods can be among the most rewarding times to play - where vivid, almost cinematic memories are shaped for life. Needless to say, this was one of those special times for me.”

Basilar Mix Series 01 - Sunil Sharpe

SB02 is a collection of five club-oriented tracks spanning multiple styles by Dublin artist Small Bear, made at various points over the last five years.

Idle Hands (128bpm) opens the EP with a steady tech/prog house groove. A dubby bassline anchors the track while a squelchy, resonant synth wraps around it. Subtle pads slowly rise alongside leading to a euphoric, hands-in-the-air breakdown that is made for peak time dancefloors.

Love Child (134bpm) is a more low-key, after-party vibe. Utilising a repeated vocal sample from The Supremes’ song of the same name, this 2-step UK garage track pairs subtle synth chords with a deep sub bassline and staccato M1 organ hits. The result is understated and hypnotic, nodding to UKG’s roots while keeping things firmly modern.

Sub 2 (140bpm) is a wubby roller designed for dark rooms and big systems. Rave stabs punch through the mix in the intro before the beat locks into a heavy, bass led rhythm, blending UK bass sensibilities with high-tempo prog and tech house.

The vibe shifts to drum & bass in Live Fast Die Young (160bpm), which samples Bad Girls by M.I.A. This track is a relentless assault of breaks, driven forward by choppy amen snares and a heavy warping bassline.

Memory (170bpm) is a short and sweet jungle track built around a sample from Roy Ayers’ The Memory. The first half bursts open with bright synths, rolling amen breaks, and a fat bassline before transitioning to a more subdued second half. The synths soften and offer a slightly introspective close to the EP.

Hovering around the 126 BPM mark, it’s a pure showcase of all things sexy and tech house, illustrating that a higher BPM doesn’t always mean a more potent energy. The mix features seductive, rolling, and vocal-heavy rhythms, with tracks from PACH, Switch, and Mark Williams.
