Dave Merrick discovered the Native American Flute on a recent extended visit to New Mexico, firstly through the writings and music of R. Carlos Nakai, and then through High Spirits Flutes and Odell Borg. 

“I found the Native American flute's ethereal sound perfectly suited to the majestic landscapes of New Mexico. While there I visited the Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument on the Cochiti Pueblo. Upon returning home to England I was inspired to improvise and record “Tent Rocks” in honour of that landscape.  I hope everyone likes listening to this tribute as much as I enjoyed recording it.”

“Tent Rocks” is in the key of F# and features guitar and Bodhran, a traditional Irish frame drum. 

“I feel privileged to have the opportunity to experience and learn from Native American traditions and music. My stay in New Mexico was a wonderful experience, and learning the Native American flute and listening to indigenous musicians play was a huge part of that.”

Merrick loves playing the flute in Europe and feels, “it has a worldly resonance that mixes beautifully with traditional European instruments like the Bodhran.”

Turn The Tide

Each year my wife and I drive out to the plains just east of Patagonia, Arizona to see the Sandhill Cranes perform their mating dances. It was while sitting with my wife among the golden grasses watching these romantic dances that I was inspired to write this song.  But the title didn't come to me until later while driving through the winding countryside, the sun casting a peach glow over the road, my wife by my side, so easy, so beautiful, so sweet is the “Sunset Road”.

I am playing an Em Native American style flute that I made over some very cool guitar tracks played by  my step-son Jessie Richardson .  

Daydream

Mother Nature embraced Naomi Littletree while she was growing up on her family's farm, she experienced and learned to understand, the natural cycles of life that have become her view of the world.

When introduced to the Native flute, she was drawn to its contemplative voice, which so easily expresses her love of nature.

Naomi’s heartfelt connection to the trees, flowers, animals are represented in the songs she has created for this project.
