So I love this track from Tumbleweed Connection and having managed to get the vocal track decided to build a complete remix around it. The VG99 is doing guitar duties as always - it's a dirty strat patch with freezable organ pad (you can hear it "frozen" in the intros and outros). I let a little inner SRV out at the end for good measure!

So this is my take on a typlical Steel String acoustic sound specifically for picking. Ctrl 1 switches 12 string and Ctrl 2 switches reverb - alt tuning goes to drop d. Not bad for a solid body with a mag pickup and 9 gauge strings!

The tone I'm going fr is his lead sound from around 89/90 when he was briefly with Level 42. It's quite flattering to legato style (unsurprisingly) - use lots of up pulls on the trem which he was quite keen on at the time. Patch available from vguitarforums

VG99 patch trying to recreate the classic Heil Talk Box sound. Very difficult to achieve and playing via expression pedal rather than your gob is a challenge but I think it came out not too shabby. The patch is available to download from vguitarforums.com

Talk Box VG99 Patch Demo - yes Talk box!

Yeah I know it's all a bit 80's guitar axe god stuff but this patch basically shows off the input level control assigns of VG99 in order to automatically reduce the delay and reverb send when playing and allow them to increase as the note dies off - like a sophisticated ducking. GK vol and EXP 1 on FC300 control how the level of verb and delay and CTL2 turns the verb and delay on or off. TBH, the tone is way off as I was tired when this was done and made the cardinal sin of tweaking the tone over the headphones. Anyway, it demos the whole lush verb delay thing...

OK so please remember we're using a guitar and guitar processor here trying to emulate the very recognisable bass sound of Geddy Lee. No samples. No PCM. Barchetta VG99 Bass Patch in the style of Geddy Lee

Deceptively simple tone that proves actually, a helluva a lot is in the fingers. I took my best shot. So classic strat on bridge pup going into Boss DS and then Marshall Stack with a bit of delay. That's it. I've used a lot of mastering compression and limiting to beef the mix up. Gary was a fantastic player - being left handed but playing right handed gave him a level of strength and speed in the fretting hand that's near enough impossible to match. His speed picking is like a machine gun and he uses the first two finger for 2 and 3 fret box stretches. RIP fella.

Gary Moore 1983 Lead Strat Tone - VG99 demo

An attempt at recreating the choral vocal sound used on Voice of Necam from Steve Hackett's Please Don't Touch album. Sometimes it sounds voice like sometimes it's wide of the mark. I used the humaniser and lots of tight EQing to get this sound - bearing in mind it's just pure guitar tone remodelled - no samples - not too shabby.

A rendition of Jeff Buckley’s Lover you should’ve come over featuring the man himself backed up by a dual tone VG99 patch. COSM A is the organ model with auto rotary speaker fast and slow switching and freeze pedal to hold the chords so the guitar can move over the top of them. COSM B is a Tele with neck pup (well it is Jeff afterall!) with gain controllable from GK300 volume pot. It’s a very dynamic patch and the organ follows the main git dynamics really nicely with just enough movement from the rotary speaker to cover up the organ sounds short comings!

VG99 Patch Demo - "Lover you should've come over"

Tricky one this - when you listen to the track there's definitely a wah being used as you can hear wah in time with the track but also slow wah swells. I initially thought it might be a univibe because it seems much more subtle than a normal wah. There's also clearly a chorus being used AHEAD of the amp - it has that characteristic grit you get when you put chorus ahead of a dirty pre-amp. We know he was using JCM800's at the time so I ran up two model chains and only put the wah on one to get that subtlety - patch available from vguitarforums.com

I've been making mash-ups on and off since May 2003 - if anyone's to blame for all this then it's Soundhog and Go Home Production - part of the old guard from Get Your Bootleg On (GYBO). I did this stuff for fun - no, really! It's all about the challenge of adding vocal a to instrumental b or any combination and coming up with something interesting and new. Some of the stuff in this set has been broadcast on commercial Radio - most notably "New York at Last" which created a bit of a frenzy with Queen fans who inundated Brian May with request for release. Jeff Lynne Strummer VG99 Patch Demo

When Alan Murphy was playing with SFX live, he would use a splitter box and run a Boogie and Roland Cube at the same time, creating a unique "dirty clean" sound through their combination. This technique fo the two amps can be heard on his solo tone on David Roachs album track Nerja. Here I've used a dirty Fender Twin combined with a clean JC120 simulation to get the tone. First half is true to the solo, second half is just buscking...

VG99 - Glitch Patch Infinity Jet Demo 2

Played in one pass on one track by one guitar with one patch. The verse guitars on the original are double tracked panned hard left and right and it's impossible for one person to play exactly what Paul Kossoff did because he used different inversions of the A chord on left and right takes besides massively different tone setup. I've used some cunning variable delay between the left and right models to simulate double tracking by a single guitar. This patch also has the solo tone.
